In this video I show you how I made 3x3 dungeon tiles for Dungeons & Dragons with arcane symbols that actually glow! I did this by making use of cheap LED string lights from Amazon.

There must be a thing called "fancy crafter syndrome" where we get caught up in using specialized products and trying to make a new favorite material work, when really the old basics were what we needed right from the start. Great video man!

I really do need to do more stuff with LEDs. Making glowing magic crystals was fun. That rune-tile really seems more like an altar or something that I'd put on TOP of a tile. But I spose it works either way!

Why not both? :D And it also works upright as a portal or glowing run on a wall. The weight of the epoxy makes it pretty stable standing like that.

Your sponsor is really hitting that Baldur's Gate 3 vibe! - This project, like nearly every other project, gives me so many tools and ideas for things I will do, even if they will not be exactly the project in the video. - Those lights would be great, I think, to attack to a tree armature (I was given about a dozen with no foliage attached yet) under foliage to represent a faerie tree or maybe a swamp tree infested with will'o'wisps and draped with hanging strands of Spanish moss.. - edit: lights ordered!

If you wanted to make a removable top for it, it would likely be a good idea to attach the top and middle pieces together and then attach them to the base with magnets. You could add rigidity to the top piece by putting a thin piece of clear plastic under it, which could be scuffed with a red scotchbrite to help diffuse the light some.

The party solves an important puzzle or the big bad guy starts some kind of summoning ritual and the runes start to glow without having to take the tile out and flip the switch, love how these kinds of things just inspire more and more ideas

I might adopt this concept into a freestanding wall (so the layers could be thicker) and magnets with swapable symbols/murals. Ooh, or like lighting gels so the color can change.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, if you don't have the thickness limitation of trying to match existing tile thickness you can do all sorts of things. As is though one nice thing about this tile is that it CAN stand up and be used as a freestanding upright portal or something. All that epoxy fill gives it a nice weight so it's pretty stable.

One of your simpler ideas, but so well executed! There's no way that players won't all go "woah!" when that tile is revealed. In a year. When we can play again in person 😩
@raughboy188
@raughboy188 4 жыл бұрын
This actualy gave me an idea. You can make more tiles like one you made for video but make them double sided so one side holds rune that acts as trap while other side looks like any other normal tile .you can place them on the field like magical traps that look like normal tiles and if player steps on it just flip it that is if you're game master since i think that is something only game master should know which ones are traps. This is amazing! You gotta love fantasy as genre because if you have wild imagination possibilities are endless which is why i love it.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Making these double sided and concealing the batter compartment/switch while keeping them accessible would be a big pain, just to accomplish something that you can do just by swapping a normal tile for this one when the time is right ;) Work smarter, not harder.
@raughboy188
@raughboy188 4 жыл бұрын
True! There are ways around that. One could be making that tile bit thinner than the rest and all you do is just make cover that looks like other floor tile with other side painted black so light doesn't show. When somebody steps on it just remove the cover and when the effect of trap does whatever it was than swap it with normal tile. Thats just one way around it. This is bit harder way but smart. or just put small magnets on the bottom so you can have battery compartment accesible and bottom part could look like normal tile you can easily conceal those magnets. I know this suggestions are bit complicated so it's best not to complicate things unnecesarily.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
You are still working harder. Just use a normal tile, switch tiles when needed. There is absolutely no reason to do anything else....other than maybe just because you enjoy the process of making something needlessly complicated, which is it's own valid justification. But it's important to know this is a needlessly complicated and pointless venture. Choose to take that path only if you enjoy the process enough. The end does not justify the means.

@hacknslash318
@hacknslash318 4 жыл бұрын
Super cool! Btw, I would bet that those LEDs are wired in parallel, meaning that you could carefully cut off some at the end of the wire and have less LEDs, doing so while powered off and making sure the ends can’t short together, to end up with a shorter chain. This would reduce its size and light output but would make the battery last much longer.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Yea, you can easily snip these shorter, I tried it out while working on something else. On this one I wanted it as bright as possible, but there are a lot of situations where it would be worth shortening the wire to make it more manageable or practical to fit in something.

Cool, you briefly thought about making a whole set of these with different arcane emblems, Spell traps like Symbol of Death, Weakness, Fear, Persuasion, Pain, and Flame. The symbols seem to be open for interpretation, but the research might be fun. Imagine your gamers stepping onto a tile, you immediately inform them that a saving throw must be made, while they are rolling you replace the tiles with your 3X3 symbol, the players hold breath waiting to see what the emblem might reveal. *phew* a Slowing spell trap, it could have been worse. Damn it Rouge why didn't you search this room. I'm new to your page and am trying to catch up on everything you do. Very enjoyable channel.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I don't have one either, but it's really inexpensive to pay someone that have that machine. Another really good option is to 3d print the top layer and 3d printers are a lot more common than cnc machines in the community. Archvillain is on my short list for my first 3D printing patreon. My 3D printer comes in tomorrow, so I might just have to join up!

cool video as always. I like it when you leverage tools, like the proxxon to its fullest, this is really where it shines being able to make super clean very precise cuts. The tile turned out really well! The sponsor minis look great, on point for all those BG3 players out there. the nautiloid ship looks b-b-bonkers! Thats right, so bonkers it just made me stutter! its that cool! Have you messed around with colored resin for your 3D printer? I've seen some really great glow effects done by using the translucent green resin and clever painting. Great work sir!
