Once Frozen they are even better when thawed and heated. I can't thank you enough for a good baked bean recipe that is tomato sauce based. This seems to be the definitive video on Heinz style British beans in tomato sauce.. Heinz cans are really expensive here in Thailand so will try and make a big batch and freeze them. Very useful as a base for all kinds of things, from chili to tomato soup with the beans giving the soup a lot more body and substance. Or fry it up with onions, any kind of meat, a lot of chili peppers, hot paprika and cumin powder and it turns into an excellent Mexican breakfast, fried egg on top. WIll be a big quantity.. 1 kg of dried beans (will at least double in weight), a wholesale size can of tomato from Makro, bell peppers (because why not) and onions. I should have a whole lot of the stuff very soon. :)

I made a double recipe and kept some in the fridge and froze some and they were absolutely delicious!! This is About as close to Heinz as you're ever going to get without purchasing Heinz baked beans. I ate them all and finished them the end of last week. I finished them up on toast and being a vegan beans are very important to me. I am soaking my beans right now to make a second double batch. The only thing I did not double were the tinned tomatoes but these beans are absolutely gorgeous! I ate them in jacket potatoes and on toast and in veggie and grain bowls and simply alone. Way to go with this recipe!! Good, memory inducing and cheap as chips. :-) :-) I also used Just a Touch less smoked paprika.

You can put them on anything or over anything or just in a bowl with some toppings. I'm going to make another double batch tomorrow that I need to soak my beans tonight. So, I am using pinto beans because I have a 12 pound bag and I thought I had Great Northern beans and both bags I must have used so we're going to make Hines pinto beans! :-) still a double batch.

I decided to give your recipe an exact go. It was great! I did put some Brooks ketchup in it and pickled green tobasco juice for the third bite. I did tweak the soaking to the putting my bowl of navies on top of the water heater. It seemed to help the cook time a bit. Next go around, I will put all the ingredients plus 3/4 cup water over night and make adjustments on the stove. This might speed up the beans taking on flavor, I will keep you and the channel posted. Any suggestions on how to recreate the Heinz BBQ sauce baked beans? They’ve changed the tin sizes and now the BBQ sauce is only available in the enormous tins in Australia. I don’t always want them multiple days in a row so thought if I could get pretty close to the flavour I love I could make a big batch and pressure can them in small jars so they’re shelf stable. I tried a BBQ baked beans recipe I found online and discovered that American baked beans are very different, and I’ve found a few recipes for Heinz style in tomato sauce, but can’t find anything for the BBQ.
@kardainzr1612 жыл бұрын
Add some BBQ sauce and you should get a close taste, I always preferred the Ham flavoured beans personally,, but just a squeeze of bbq whilst cooking should give you what you want.
@moniquem7832 жыл бұрын
@@kardainzr161 oh that’s an interesting thought. Tomato sauce with a squirt of BBQ. Hmmm. Yeah maybe that would do it. It is a very subtle BBQyness. Funny it never occurred to me to try that as I do a squirt of BBQ sauce in my bolognaise sauce! The ham sauce is my second favourite, and I will want to make a batch of them now and then too. Apparently that’s as simple as just doing the tomato sauce recipe and throwing a ham hock in as it simmers. I’ve been putting off trying this. I have heaps of dry beans and bought tinned tomatoes and then didn’t do it. Just last week I realised why. I have an aversion to tinned tomatoes. I don’t know what it is, but I can taste something in them that I really don’t like. Last week I made osso buco and used tinned tomatoes as per the recipe and didn’t enjoy it at all. Then a few days later I made moussaka and instead of using the tinned tomatoes I used passata and it was great. No tinned taste. So I think I’ll donate the rest of those tins to a food pantry and use all passata in my beans 😊 You’ve inspired me again. Thanks!

@@Margherite2freezer space is far too precious in my house to be wasted on an item that should be shelf stable. I only shop every 6-8 weeks so it’s very tight. I am from Maine where I made and still do make fantastic New England baked beans which other people would call Boston baked beans and they are gorgeous. My grandmother was very British and used Campbell's baked beans on toast those were the only ones she would put on toast and they had tomato sauce. They taste just like Heinz. Then he comes me moving to the UK and I stayed for almost 15 years! So I got used to Heinz beans on toast and beans on chips with egg and oh how I missed them when I moved to Morocco. So I continued to make New England baked beans and came back to the States a few years later craving beans on toast. In the meantime I had gone vegan so no more pork and beans for me. So I had to suffer it out and then all of the sudden Heinz vegetarian baked beans in a rich tomato sauce showed up in the store not in the ethnic aisle but in the real food aisle that's cheap. However I am cheaper! Which leads me to your video and also to let you know that haricot beans and pea beans and navy beans are all the same Bean but the Great Northern bean is a little bit larger and I use whichever is on sale that week or least expensive. Now what a long story for such a little bean bean just to get to why I'm watching a video! LOL hahaha :-)

Hey @Steve, a couple of questions for you but first, I hope you are residing in a safe country? and pref keeping yourself as safe as possible, isolating yourself? Regarding the beans, a couple of questions; whats your opinion on salting the soaking water, I notice you didn't and my mum doesn't but America's test kitchen people suggest salting the water not only salts and flavours the beans but strengthens the skins so they don't burst while cooking whereas my mum says salting toughens the beans which you don't want, whats your opinion on the matter? Also, if I am wanting to add bacon or chorizo sausage, cooked into the bean mix, could I still bottle them in the same way? Lastly, they look like the perfect size jars for me, what size would they be in mil or grams?
@Steve-Owens4 жыл бұрын
Salting would toughen the skins but do you want that? Maybe with smaller beans but the tougher the skins the harder for them to absorb flavour, so the choice is your's, I think the Jars were about a pint but I can't be sure as I am in Istanbul.. ;o)
@MaZEEZaM4 жыл бұрын
@@Steve-Owens Yeah, I want them to soak as much flavour in as possible, no salting then. ok, I think a pint is about 600mls? either way, close enough. I really don't know whether Istanbul has many virus numbers or not, hopefully that means very few. Hope you are staying safe :) Best regards :)

Hi Amber… As with this recipe, UK Heinz Beans and many other UK varieties are Vegan and don’t contain either chicken broth or Worcestershire Sauce. Unlike this and many other recipes that you may come across, they don’t use Brown sugar either; it was taken out of the original American recipe decades ago, specifically for the UK market, so white granulated is fine. See the section “reinventing the classic recipe” in the link below. If you come across a recipe that has Ketchup (UK “tomato sauce”) be mindful, that some Ketchup like Heinz contains High Fructose Corn Syrup and the end product is likely to taste a little too sweet for British taste. In answer to your question, you can easily purchase Vegan Worcestershire Sauce or replace it with cheep white vinegar and use water or vegetable stock instead of chicken stock. Again, be mindful of any recipe using Worcestershire and vinegar as the vinegar flavor can be overpowering. Personally, I use water instead of stock and a very small amount of a key ingredient for Bachelors Beans, “yeast extract”, AKA Marmite in the UK. (Approx 1/8th - 1/4 teaspoon per 2 cups / 16 oz water, in any recipe you find). Hope this helps and the link below is good reading for anyone interested in the history of Heinz baked beans and their “secret recipe”. www.lovefood.com/gallerylist/97568/the-secret-history-of-baked-beans

What is in the mixed herbs? Do you buy them mixed or do you mix your own?

Have you received a reply to your question? (If so, it doesn't show up here ...) If not, have you found out in the meantime? Many thanks.

In the UK it's a simple blend of dried green herbs, usually some of Marjoram, Basil, Oregano, Thyme, Parsley, Sage, Mint. Italian herbs or Herbes De Provence are probably close enough, or mix your own from the list I've provided (the most popular brand is just Marjoram, Basil, Oregano, Thyme).

Thank you Steve! I’m from Mexico. I went to study to Paris some years ago and my landlord was British. She taught me how to make English breakfast and I totally loved it! Now that I’m back in Mexico I’ve been looking for baked beans everywhere and it’s impossible to get them! I’m making them tomorrow and tell you how it went! Wish me luck! I’m craving so much to try a proper English breakfast once again! I bought some “alubia chica”...google says they’re small haricots (they’re also white small beans)...I hope they’re okay. The big “alubia” is the one that is used in traditional Spanish cuisine to make “Fabada”. Can you tell if it’s the same? Thanks!!!

Thanks Jorge, I think alubia chica will be a good choice, good luck, be aware that the final beans will get better with some ageing. Enjoy your full English.

Hey Jorge! Did it work with alubias? I've also been looking for baked beans in México but haven't found any, so I'll give this recipe a try!

Interesting to not cook the beans separately in water first. I see most recipes do that, but this is definitely easier.
