A few things I forgot to mention in the video - I used 5% arrowroot powder and 5% corn starch. Highly recommend arrowroot powder over corn starch. Also, I highly recommend the addition of vitamin E in anhydrous products. I believe I talked about this in a past video of my “formulating for beginners series” Vitamin E keeps oils from oxidizing. Meaning it will help keep the oils fresher resulting in an anhydrous product that lasts longer. Always remember, vitamin E is not a preservative. It just helps oils last longer by delaying the oxidation process. When oils come into contact with oxygen it degrades the quality of the oil and eventually produces rancidity in oils.

The fact that I share my knowledge on formulating doesn't really make me scared that people aren't going to buy my products. A lot of people aren't interested in making their own products, they just like to watch and learn. & the people who do want to learn how to formulate, probably aren't going to buy my products anyway, because they make their own.

TaraLee very true! I'm pretty sure 90% of those watching just like to be informed and learn but won't actually make their own products. I think if you aren't going to make a business out of it, it's not worth buying all the stuff to make it yourself, so it's better to buy from those who already are making it. Plus supporting small businesses is so dear to me ❤️

TaraLee Not you. I’m talking in general. I’m mainly thinking about some instances in the soap making community I observed. It is their business to make and sell soap and a lot of them almost never give out their formulas. Their videos are more of a promoting than tutorial. Maybe it’s because most people that do look at those videos do make soap. I really don’t know. I was just answering in general why a person might not give it up.

More info on butters: For those who don’t know, butters in their raw form (before you whip up your ‘body butter’ recipe) are sourced from nuts, beans, and seeds. So, butters can have a nutty aroma (if they have an aroma at all) or an aroma with the characteristics of the plant the butter is derived from (like cocoa butter smelling chocolatey). Smell can also depend on where the plant grew up. Butters can add viscosity to a recipe. Like Tara mentioned butters are moisturizers. You may hear them referred to as emollients which means moisturizer (put plainly). :)

Do we add vitamin E to conserve body butter????!!!!!
@oliviagraves5327
@oliviagraves5327 3 жыл бұрын
@@dhahriassia3438 According to this video by Tara (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qniTZJagf8tmjpI) Vitamin E oil is an antioxidant. Therefore you can use it to preserve oil/oil based products. However, the moment water is introduced to the butter they opens the door for organisms like bacteria to make a home in the product. Tara said where there is water there is life. Which is true. If you are just making body butter for yourself vitamin E oil sounds like a reasonable preservative to use. If you make a small batch, even if you get water in it because your hands weren’t dry when you got some, you may end up using all of it before there is enough time for anything to go bad. I recommend watching Tara’s formulating for beginners playlists!!! She explains a lot of this stuff. Honestly because body butters are anhydrous and a lot of butters and oils have a shelf life of a year in the correct environment you may not need a preservative at all as long as you keep it dry. Good luck on your body butter making journey :)

I'm a Tattoo Artist and make my own brand of a Tattoo Glide Product for Tattooing. The industry has used petroleum jelly for years but it is definitely not something you want on a fresh Tattoo which is a wound. There are several products on the market but they are expensive. I started with a basic Shea/Coconut Oil recipe with essential oils and Vitamin E as a preservative and have been fine-tuning it. For my needs, I want a lubricant that is stable, natural, and healthy. I am also now working on an aftercare product to keep the Art fresh! I learned so much from this video that I already ordered a few additional ingredients to work on my formula. Thank you TaraLee for this very informative video!

Thanks again and I enjoyed watching the video.

My favorite butter is cupuaçu butter... it's very moisturizing and in my opinion, far less greasy than other butters such as shea or cocoa, besides having what I consider the "perfect" consistency (harder than shea yet softer than cocoa). I really enjoy using it in my deep moisturizing conditioner formula

Thank you so much for informing me what I am doing wrong with my Body Butter. I am trying to start a business called Blackem Beauty. I started working on sugar scrubs and transitioning into body butter as well. I can tell from your video Sugar Scrubs and Body Butter are NOT the same thing. They do not even have the same ingredients for body butter. Body Butters depends mostly on how much oils and butter you add into them. Which is why I tried buying arrowroot powder to figure out how I am going to add into my products and as well as different oils like grape seed oil. I am trying to not make my Body Butter too oily since I add too much oil into my sugar scrubs I thought it would be fine to do the same for my body butters. Thank you so much for creating this video and letting me open my eyes to what I need to train myself for the upcoming future.

Deandra’sHeart emulsifier is a product that typically helps mix water and oils together. Because oil and water do not mix people use and emulsifier to help it blend it together and stay together and not separate when settled. There are all types of emulsifiers you just have to do your research as to which one you want to use in your butter.

This ingredient doesn't cause any degradation to any of the other ingredients.

It's based on batch size e.g. You're making a 200g jar of body butter so you would use 200g as your 100% so 70% butter would be 140g in this example

I’m glad I watched this because I make butters on my store I recently started adding kokum butter for the first time to the Shea butter and I just made a small amount to see how it will take and my butter harden now I know not to to use a lot of kokum just a little and use more Shea butter when I start making bigger batches

Omd I have so much questions like how do you measure the percentages ? How long does the body butters last for ( the expiry date)? Can you make perfumes and fragrances oils next please love you 💕💕💕

check out my other videos in my formulating for beginners series. Here is a link to the playlist. - bit.ly/2tVL9Q4 Let's say you want to make a 500 gram batch of body butter and you need 70% shea butter. Then calculate what 70% of 500 is. You can do this by simply googling "what is 70% of 500" or you can do the math by making 70% a decimal, which would be .70 and multiplying .70 by 500. which equals 350. So that means you need 350 grams of shea butter. As for shelf life, check with the supplier you buy your ingredients from. I don’t have any plans on makings a perfume but I’ll keep it in mind.

@@TaraLeee how do you determine what %s to use for what butters ,and oils then also your additives such as colorants? Do you always calculate based off grams or ounces be it butters lotions shampoos or conditioners? Again thank you in advance!

I’ve noticed it depends on the fragrance and where you order it from. Usually, the websites or companies will have the percentages that should be used. However, you can also try bramble berry’s fragrance calculator.

Hi. I have been watching your video how to make skincare. I have struggled with vitamin c serum ( using ascorbic acid) the texture is a bit too sticky. Here is my ingredients Ascorbic acid 15% Butelene glycol 3% Double Hya 3% Polysorbate 20 3% Xanthan gum 1% Mineral oil 5% Ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate 3% D-alpha tocopherol 1% Ferrulic 1% Phytic acid 1% Preservatives 1% The rest is water My question is should i change butelene glycol to 1-2 hexanediol ? Or other solvents?
