That is definitely old school! My Grandmother used to make this when I was growing up.She made her own dough ,it was more like a biscuit dough, she added a bit of baking powder to it.She never wrote down any recipes but once I watched her make it, she put each ingredient in a bowl.I took it out and measured it(she was very patient) then she would continue. She used nutmeg. She said she grew up eating this, when they didn't have much sugar during the Depression, they would make it, when they didn't have fruit to make a fruit pie, this is what they made.Everyone LOVED it, she served it warm. She told me when my Father came into the family, he suggested she add berries to the butter roll and she did a few times, but mostly just the milk sauce and butter roll. Thanks for bringing back those memories for me as well! I'll have to try your version, it's much richer than the old school one.

You my kind of cook... you cook the way I was taught how to cook back in the days. And it feels so good to see somebody on youtube showing others how to make delicious and comforting old school dishes. We as young girls learned to cook at a early age and we got good at it...some of us had to cook for the family for different reasons. But it got done and the recipes got pasted down and some got perked, and u made food the way you liked. And the food was so good. When I saw you cook one of my favorite dessert, that butter roll and u made it with crescent roll, very smart. You became my favorite cook on youtube. When I see ur name I know "this going to be good". I been watching u and I love you. You cook the way I learned to cook. I love the short cuts u show us. Keep up the great work you're doing. With cooks like you and there are other on youtube I like but you're keeping the old recipes alive and your food is so good. I made ur chicken pot pie with the crescent roll crust. It's my family favorite now. Do u have a good (chicken Ala king) recipe with rice. Please keep bringing us great food. God bless you beautiful lady...

I may be super late to the conversation but my Grandmother used to make this when I was a child. I didn’t call it a butter roll... I would say Madear... can you make that Milk and bread please? For years I NEVER knew it was called butter roll. She would make her own dough more like little loaves of bread. She passed away on 2012 at the age of 92. She took the “Milk and bread” to the grave with her. But as I read some of these accounts of grandparents from Mississippi and beyond making the same thing... it brings tears to my eyes. They made soooo much out of soooo little. God bless them all!!!

You are indeed a God send. I did make these my children loved them. I've done several of your recipes. I keep frozen peaches and fruit in the freezer. There 2 recipies I want to make that my mom did one was tea cakes they was actually cookies. Sometime she did the squares and sometimes she used a jar cut them like cookies. They were a treat Many recipies I have lost. My grandmother my fathers mother was all about cooking from scratch she used swans cake flour. She did the caramel sauce like u do. She so did sweet potatoes in pan used cust between layers mixed cinnamon and sugar sprinkled lord that crust was the bomb she raised sweet potatoes hers was huge she could grow anything. Do you have a layered sweetpotatoe cut long and crust between the layers sprinkled with cinnamon sugar wed be so excited to see my daddy take that pan we knew what he was going to bring home. She passed in 87 I remember what a good cook she was. I used to make the buttermilk poundcake I'd do one every week had stop I was gaining weight sadly i.lost that recipie but would love to do them again I got so good at it people asked me to buy them. I see you have a cook book I'd love to order one if they still in print. I watch a lot of cooking but you remind me so much of how my grandma sweet did everything from scratch. Cakes frosting. I never been so excited to find you on you tube.👍💯💜🤗. So if you have a tea cake a layered sweetpotote or buttermilk cake recipie I'd be ever so grateful. I did these I watched the video then got what I needed. I have stocked my pantry with dry goods. Cake flour, I keep can peaches and pie filling don't mind using cresentrolls u have bought back so many recipies that I grew up with. There's not a lot of old school teachers no more so u can just imagine how excited I was to find you on you tube. Bless you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart lots love, respect and positivity always. 👍💯💜🤗👏🙂. Neita james.👋🦋🌠⚘🙏.

That’s so awesome! My grandmother taught me how to cook this before she passed! I always use pie crust dough. I’m going to try it with the crescent roll dough at some point 💜💜💜

Excellent job! Your cooking style and choices are so much like my mother's and she was born in Tennessee. This recipe dates back waaay before the '50s. My mom was born in the '20s and her mother would make it. My mom also made it for us. This recipe is at least 100+ years old!

I’m only 22 years old and being a southern girl I’ve only experienced this dessert twice in my life and here lately I’ve been craving for some of these. Thanks for the recipe I’m going to attempt to make some this weekend ☺️

My Mother-in-law made this often for the family. This recipe seems quite easier than hers from scratch. I could never get it right, but I will definitely give a go at yours! Thank you for this!🤗
