Hi everyone! I re-uploaded this Cantonese Char Siu video again because the original video has some problem. (This video was filmed when I was 8 months pregnant with my baby girl. So I was a little chubby. Haha...) I hope that you enjoy it! :D
Cantonese Char Siu Recipe:
Ingredients
1 pound of pork butt
2 tablespoons of honey and 2 tablespoons of water
Sauce
2 pieces of Chinese fermented red bean curd
1 tablespoon of oyster sauce
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon of Shaoxing wine
2 tablespoons of honey
4 tablespoons of sugar
a pinch of five-spice powder
a pinch of white pepper
1 clove of minced garlic
In a bowl, add 2 pieces of Chinese fermented red bean curd, 1 tablespoon of oyster sauce, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of dark soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of Shaoxing wine, 2 tablespoons of honey, 4 tablespoons of sugar, a pinch of five-spice powder, a pinch of white pepper, 1 clove of minced garlic. Mix well.
In a big zip lock bag, add 1 pound of pork butt and the sauce. Marinate overnight in the fridge.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Pour the marinade sauce into a bowl. Place the pork on a wire rack and bake for 25 minutes. Then remove from oven, brush the remaining sauce over both sides. Place it back into the oven and bake for another 25 minutes. Take them out and brush honey water on it and bake for another 10 minutes.
Slice the char siu into bite size pieces.

CiCi, good afternoon omg the char siu its sooo good have jus make it again have double and triple the sauce in the jar and everytime I want to make i jus take out and pour what I needed ... surprising it can be kept for couple of month no issues ... thank you again .. GB you.

Love your recipe!! Char siu is so versatile. Congratulations on your new pregnancy!! I will be interested in a recipe when for swollen legs, not pregnancy related, just for standing up a bit too long!!

Hi Ci Ci - love your videos. I've been trying to make Char Siu well, and am confident in the cuts of pork I'm using, but I'm having trouble getting the same final flavor I get from my favorite Cantonese Restaurants. I notice you don't add Hoisin Sauce in your marinade. So many other recipes call for it and I've been adding about a T to mine. Could this be the reason I'm less than happy with my results? Should I just leave it out? The other parts of the recipe are very similar to yours, including the red bean curd I get from my Asian market.

Hi Sharon, thank you for the question! Hoisin sauce shouldn't change the taste of the final product that much. Everyone may make char siu sauce slightly differently. I have seen a chef adding peanut butter in his char siu marinade. It's odd, but that is his recipe. Also, Chinese restaurants might have a special type of oven for their char siu. That would also affect the taste. Have fun cooking and exploring! Best wishes!

Also can I make the sauce in advance and keep it for like few weeks also? We had make the roast pork and chia siu yesterday and its our favourite because outside roast pork v salt we love yr recipe ... thank god ... everytime when we think of either we think of YOU!! GB u and yr family... Amen.
