I'm a lover of beans who just recently met someone who is not a backpacker but became a recent vegetarian. I sent this to her and she says thank you. She had no idea chickpea powder was versatile, or could taste good. I thank you, Miranda and would welcome any other food videos, I would prefer to make my own and stay away from the freeze dried packs if I can.

Lentils and split peas are the quickest cooking of the bean family. Lentils will cook even faster if they are presoaked for a few hours. On a multi-day backpacking trip, use the heavy canned stuff first and save the dry lentils till later in the trip. Then, on the day you plan to have lentils for dinner, put them in a container, just cover them with water and leave them to soak. If you are going to spend two nights in the same place, you can leave them to soak in camp while you go off to do whatever (climb, fish, photograph, etc.), or, if you are going to cover several kilometers on the day, start the lentils soaking at lunch or in the afternoon a couple of hours before you plan to start cooking. You will find the lentils have absorbed the water, so add a little more and proceed. You will find the lentils cook quite quickly.

Bean\peas powder (flour) are very practical camping food. Nice filler for soup etc making it more consistent and good. Almost instant ready. More easy to digest. Only difficulty is you must premix it in cold water or add slowly in boiling water to prevent lumps.

Back in the 70s my grandma used to roast soybeans in the oven like peanuts until they were crisp, then rolled in a little oil and salt -- they were delicious!! My granddad used to fuss at her, asking why she was eating hog food when they had perfectly good meat in the freezer. She was way ahead of her time!

I am gonna try those Chickpea eggs. My favorite is hiking meal Spanish Rice & Beans. 1/2 Cup Minute rice, 1/2 Cup Refried Beans, 1/2 Tbsp Tomato Bullion, 1/2 Tbsp Taco Seasoning, 1 Tbsp Cheese Powder. On trail, I add 10oz boiling water and let sit 5 minutes. Better if you add real cheese and Fritos once cooked.

Miranda :) fish chowder (or corn, corn is cool too) and bhindi badgi (okra and eggplant but these can be subbed with many other veg like zucchini or potatoes or carrots etc). Coconut powder is in the 60% region of fats and unlike other oils doesn't make a slippery wet leaky mess.

Love beans. Went whole food plant based about 3 months ago - can now crush 2 cans of beans in a sitting without a single fart. Amazeballs - your gut flora adapt - but if you spend most of your time feeding it cheeseburgers and milkshake it's not going to happen.
