These are super useful while reading journal/conference papers in all disciplines. Thank you for this💜 (Also, I noticed Bellary/Sanganakallu, Karnataka in your notes and it's my home state. Not sure why but that made me v excited😆) Good Luck with your Masters!

Hi everyone! If you wanna take notes for maths (or any other maths based subjects such as physics), please, please,please use colours and make it pretty. I know it might not seem that useful, but the more time you spend on writing it down, the more time you'll have to understand what you're writing. You'll be able to understand everything when you re-read it, and it will make much more sense if you've also annotated parts/steps that you found hard to get. (Plus, you can flex your notes on your friends so that's already worth it😅)

Good advice to make note on an academic article that is of good quality and that is informative to your article (literature) review goal, I think.

Great advice on why stopping and starting because you're writing notes in your first scan causes you to lose your train of thought. Totally agree - I call them orphan notes because they don't relate to a point you've identified that you want to expand upon in your essay plan. First reading, imho, is a tool for you to get ideas. Take references, but keep an open mind!

Hi Rosie! I've heard people saying that, when writing an academic essay, we should produce both an (a) essay plan and (b) essay outline. What is your opinion on the potential of this distinction to help students in improving their overall essay writing ""process""? Put differently, which stages of the overall essay writing process would you get on with (a) and (b) and how might you actually go about making (a) and (b)? Thanks, and I love watching your every video!! :DDD (N.B. what they say is that essay "plan" is for structuring essay writing "process" and essay "outline" is for structuring the essay "content".)

Hi Harry, I kind of pull the two into one and make a basic plan and then keep bulking it out to create my final outline. Saying that I never had time at Ox to really spend ages planning properly so it may be useful if you have time to actually separate the two. I made a video on The StudyTube Project explaining exactly how i plan an essay which might help?

Thanks, Rosie. Curious though, I didn't quite get the reason for step 2. If step 1 is read and potentially markup the journal article and step 3 is for writing up your research notes into a document, what is step 2 for? Regards

also what is your take to "Comprehend difficult New topics, in a different field of expertise" In my context I'm doing postgrad in the business school and I have this lecture on Artificial Intelligence, bloody difficult cause have to look up every single term.

Yes this was me with Anthropology haha! It takes a lot of getting used to but actually something that helped me most was watching KZbin videos on the topics once I got a specific title of an article. Most of the time youtube videos are dumbed down a little so you can understand them better and then apply what you know to the reading.

New here & first language not English. Journals make me feel like I want to jump out the window. Complex academic English is difficult to comprehend, I see your efficient notes but still fairly complex language. any suggestions?
@RosieCrawford
@RosieCrawford 2 жыл бұрын
I get this they often use such unnecessarily flowery language don't they!? If it helps, read the abstract first to try and get an overall gist, then go through and highlight words you're unsure of to look up. Then read the whole thing through again and hopefully it'll feel less strained

Any recommendations on Endurance? I feel like I rest more than I actually Read. due to frustration and confusion.
@RosieCrawford
@RosieCrawford 2 жыл бұрын
I struggle with this too. I'd say make sure your rests are well away from a screen and in a different space to where you're working. This way your eyes and brain get a proper time to relax. I've also read that it's recommended you move your eyes from a screen/book and focus on something much further away for 30 seconds, every 20 minutes. This reduces eye strain and headaches, which can also contribute to overall tiredness
