I'm Polish, so these are staples in my kitchen! Haluski is an all-time family favorite! I fry up onions, Kielbasa and cabbage in a huge cast iron pot. I then add cooked wide egg noodles and a can of butter beans (juice and all). I always add butter, black pepper and caraway seeds. Ultimate comfort food!

Mary, this recipe looked so easy that last night I made it for my husband. Because of a serious accident, 5 years ago, that in addition to many broken bones I also had a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Because of the TBI I struggle to do the simplest of activities and chores that are now all left to my sweet husband. I started the process of making your dish early in the day and with many rests was able to complete it in time for his dinner. Because of health issues I am unable to eat animal products so I can not attest to it's flavor, BUT, I can tell you that my dear lovey was amazed at it's flavor and that I was able to manage all the preparation. He was overjoyed to learn that it made enough for many meals, some of which he froze. Thank you dear sister in Jesus for sharing so much information. God Bless!

Oh JoJo, God bless you! You have been through so much!! You will be in my prayers. I'm so happy that this meal was easy for you to start the preparation and for your sweet husband to finish it off. Glad he enjoyed it! Love, Mary

@@MarysNest Your words are so kind and I thank you for your prayers. God blessed me with a second chance at life that not many get after such a serious accident. God Bless you and your circle of loved ones.

I do my cabbage similarly. I do more of a cabbage soup though. I cut up onion and garlic and I put that in with the kielbasa when it's browning. Then I add the cabbage and some beef broth. Let that simmer for a little bit. Then I add carrots, potatoes, chickpeas, and if I feel like I want more green I'll add broccoli. Let that simmer for a a little bit. Then I turn it down and let it sit on the stove until the potatoes get soft. I salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. It is so delicious. I remember my grandmother and mother both making this dish. We do have European ancestry but I don't know where my grandmother got the recipe from.

I have been making this for a while - Thank you, Mary for posting! Thought I would update my " version". Besides the cabbage, I'll add color like carrot - shredded (or chopped and precook with meat) orange or yellow pepper. I add scallions but with the vegetables, not with the meat. And I have eliminated the vinegar because I don't like the taste and increased the mustard just a tad. Awesome. 😊

Mary, I will have to try your recipe. It fits in my low carb diet. Thanks for this recipe for sure. I have a wonderful Lousiana dish called Smothered Cabbage. This is NOT low carb for sure! The fats are bacon grease and butter but in greater amounts. Fry up sausage, take it out when browned, add sliced boiled red potatoes, brown and take out. Put in the cabbage, along with lots of onions in the remaining fat (making sure you have enough fat in order to make the "sauce" as it is the vehicle for the remaining ingredients) and stir fry until the cabbage is carmelized to a golden brown. Here comes the spices...cajun seasoning to your liking, salt, pepper, and powdered garlic. Lots of garlic, the more the better. The garlic is the shining jewel in this recipe. Make sure that all the veggies are coated with the seasonings. Add the sausage. Now add a cup of water and put the lid on to smother the cabbage at a simmer until the mixture has had time to meld the flavors, stirring frequently. Add the potatoes at the last to warm them up. Serve the smothered cabbage with the sauce over rice along with garlic french bread. Yummy!

The dish looks so tasty Mary. I don't think we can get kielbasa in the UK but can get a large smoked sausage which would suffice. Many thanks Mary for sharing. Xx

This is one of my family's favorites! :) I always make a few extra baked potatoes to have on hand for other meals (no waiting forever on potatoes to cook!), and add a couple of them chopped to this meal to make it a little more filling. :)
