Sofia Irene, I do too! So many people miss out on having a wonderful life-long companion cat because they expect them to jump straight into their laps and start being lovable. Sadly we see that at the shelter a lot. Maybe more videos and stories like Foxy's can educate cat owners into giving a shy cat a chance to "come out of their shell". Thanks for the comment!

@@KittenSchool Some people dont understand cats have personality too. We have had cats who absolutely did not like to be picked up and were particular of how to pet them. At rare occasions they did jump up on our lap and allowed us to pet them to sleep. Some jumped off the lap when they felt they had have enough love and went to sleep at their usual place. We also made sure to move when we saw the cat wanted to sleep at their usual place on the sofa for instance.

Thank you so much! I have 3 ferals in "kitten school" right now, am working with them.. wrapping up in a towel and petting till they fall asleep, but then when I let them go, they hiss and bolt.. I need to incorporate treats and a "social box", great idea!!! I am going to do that now!

I watched all the Doormouse videos. Thank you for calm, reassuring tutorials. In the last six weeks I am a new caretaker to two ferals. One gave birth about 2 days after 1st feeding and brought a healthy kitten with her yesterday. I set up a large kennel last week and trapped the other "heavily pregnant" cat to foster her indoors through birth and then socialize the kittens when old enough. Brought her in trap to vet that treats ferals to evaluate. Vet determined she probably gave birth a couple days ago so I had to release her back to her newborn kittens. This can be an emotional experience. I will get some leather gloves as you showed and will be better ready if I get the opportunity to socialize any of them. Thank you.

Hi Stephanie, it sounds like your kitty is starting to trust you! When a cat sleeps with you on the bed that is a great sign. I think if you keep doing what you are doing she'll stop running when you approach. Try keeping treats close by so when you do approach her you can hold the treat out - works like a charm! Good luck and thanks for the comment!

I just adopted a kitty about 4 months ago, who is approximately 5 years old (?). He has many of the avoidance behaviors of an abused animal, and is very seclusive. I close the bedroom door from the time I get up until I go to bed, so he can't hide under the bed around the clock. I have partitioned off small hiding places; i.e. near my computer, behind the baker's rack and so on. He is finally approaching me for affection and just lately has allowed me to brush him for about 30 seconds. ( I don't have space in my apartment for a socializing box or crate.) The other day he actually lounged on the couch for a good 30 minutes, completely alone! He is on the couch now with my other cat, though they don't "sleep in a heap" like I have seen my previous cats do. He will play now as well, with a dangling stuffed "mouse" from a pole, on a long braided cord, he will play for a good 3 or 4 minutes. He doesn't like one-on-one play with my hands. How do I get him into a travel carrier to get him looked over by the vet without traumatizing him? He has a loose tooth and is very underweight. I also want an ID chip. Also, how do I trim his claws without losing the trust he has been showing me?

Suggestion for future videos: do more of how to socialize/tame a scared/hissing and spitting kitten/s! I would like to see that, becaue they are kind of difficult and it is good to see them improve from a hissing/spitting kitten to a calm, giving love kitten (or maybe even 3-4 kittens!). Also, I love the narration and the lady's voice, she is very beautiful and sexy, too :)! Wish you good luck with the channel!

Treats go a very long way with kitties, especially if they are feral street kitties. Just keep in mind you may never be able to touch or hold some of the kitties -- many can never be 'socialized'--but almost all cats have the ability to at least come take a treat from you, or near you. Good luck!

@KittenSchool6 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I love the name Pocahontas for a kitten - adorable! But you make a good point that since it's a long name it might be harder for her to learn to come when she's called. How about giving her a nickname you use to call her, like Poco or Poca? That might work best. I have a cat named Malou La Croix (ridiculous I know, but it suits her), but I usually call her Lulu. Good luck with your kitty. She will get closer and more trustful of you as she gets older. xoxo

Hi! How many times throughout the day do you suggest putting the kitty in the social box? Also, my kitten (-6months) wants to bolt from my arms when I hold her on my lap or in my arms. How gentle do you hold on to them? So they can jump and bolt or do you hang on so they are unable to bolt? How many days do you suggest social box before trying to hold on lap or do floor exercises so they don’t run away?

Hi. I have a question for you. I recused my cat when she was a kitten but I was unable to capture her brother at the same time. I've managed to catch their mom (and fix her) and my neighbor has taken her in. I have gotten him fixed and vaccinated. My cat plays with her brother every day outside. I would really like to take him in. When he was recovering from being fixed he was very anxious to get out. How do I socialize him to get him to become and indoor cat? Also my cat loves playing with him outside but was a little unhappy when he was recovering in the house.

Only use that type of deterrent when really necessary as in serious fighting to break it up. Positive rewards when good behavior is shown work faster than trying to stop poor behavior. And kitty needs toys and scratch posts and boxes and things to keep destructive behavior down. When you yell or spray a lot ,kitty will avoid you and become anxious...Be patient always.And kind.

Hi Maja, it sometimes just takes time for a kitty to feel comfortable with you...months even. I would not try to pick the cat up very often (and some cats just don't like to be picked up at all), try playing with her on the floor and petting her there. If she is under the dinner table go there and sit with her and offer her treats, pet her, then go away for a while and come back. Sometimes just let her sit or lie next to you without even trying to touch her at all. If she thinks that you will always reach out for her every time she's near you she will want to run. When I have a shy cat I spend a lot of time playing with them, but also time just "ignoring" them so they get used to just hanging out. Good luck!

Hi kitten school, I take in feral kittens in Nairobi. There are lots. We just got three 2 month olds and I need advice. They are very aloof and seem indifferent to us. They aren’t scared so much (we used to feed them while they spent their first 2 months with mama, ) they just don’t care to be held. We hope to adopt them out through the local TNR program in a week or so. Should we separate them from each other and try one on one? Do kittens not acclimate to humans as long as their siblings are there? Any advice is welcomed!!!

Can I keep the kitty in the social box all the time?
@Tinebiene7 жыл бұрын
Hey! It's me again :). I already looked at your doormouse videos and loved them. So I bought a little cave for my cat Hermione as a social box and we coaxed here in there. And even while she was very unhappy about the new situation I was able to feed her out my hand with her favorite treat (baby food - chicken.. She just cannot resist!) but when it came to touching her she really lost it. She instantly peed and pooped all over her and totally freaked out. Jumped up the wall of the cage and aggressively biting and scratching my leather glove. There was just no way of me touching her. She was really scared out of her mind... So right now I'm actually pretty bummed and deflated.. I'm just not sure what I should do with her and whether it's actually all fair to her to keep her and not find her a feeding program where she is fed but still can live outside as a feral cat... What do you think?
@KittenSchool7 жыл бұрын
I think she needs more time just being around you without your trying to touch her, other than feeding treats. She is extremely fearful, from what you said, and hasn't reached the point where she understands that you are not trying to hurt her. The going crazy in the cage and the defecating/peeing is a sign that she highly stressed and truly thinks (for now) that you mean her harm. I would try getting her into the box (with a small litter box, food and water if you can fit it) and let her spend some time just being around you. She will take a LOT of work, and I think she might always be pretty shy, but I think you could get her past that. As for the situation being fair for her, I understand your concern. You would never want a cat to be in a constant state of anxiety. That's not fair for the cat, or quite frankly, for you either. You want a cat who will give you some affection and companionship and there is nothing wrong with wanting that. If a little time goes by and your cat is not becoming more social, you could look into a situation where she is with a colony of cats who are being cared for. (She must be fixed first, of course, I strongly recommend spay/neuter for ALL cats). So, that's my thought. Let me know how things go! xoxox

This is a great series of videos and I love your Channel! I'm having a really hard time with my 7 month old Meenu who just does not trust people.. I adopted him from the Local Humane society as a companion for my other 16 month old Maggie.. Though it took a few weeks for them to finally get along.. Meenu runs from me like I'm gonna eat him or something.. I bought a large cage with a soft blanket at the bottom to spend a couple of hours with me in the living room. Each time I put him in that cage he goes BAT SH*T CRAZY and screams and cries for almost the entire time.. He is only happy in the Cat play room in his cat condo or at the window.. I have been trying to reward him with treats but he wont eat when I'm in the room and of course Maggie sometimes steals his food.. I'm at wits end on what to do because I feel like what ever I do is hurting him.. When I got Maggie about the same time last year, she was very easy to work with, it took her maybe 3 months and she was glued to me...She is often bored and she wont play with her toys, I so I went out and got Meenu as a playmate.. Sure they play together but Meenu hates me.. I dont know how to get through to him..
@KittenSchool6 жыл бұрын
I think you need to give Meenu more time to adjust to you. Some cats are relatively easy to "tame", others take a lot more time. Even a year...or more! I suggest you just let Meenu do his thing and maybe not even try to touch him for a while. As time goes by he will stop being paranoid that you are going to try to touch or pick him up and become a lot more relaxed. Our cat Kate Moss is like this. If we walk up to her she shoots off under the couch like she's never seen us before (she is 14 years and I have had her since she was 6 months old). But when we are on the couch watching a movie she comes up and wants to sit on the top the couch near us, purrring. You may not ever have a really snuggly, affectionate lap cat with your Meenu but he'll start to show his love for you in his own way..eventually! And he doesn't hate you...he just has an extra large dose of flight instinct. Let him have his space, he is still young at 7 months, and honestly all kitties are kind of crazy when they are that age (like teenagers). Good luck and keep us posted!!! xoxo Caroline
@TheBrainSquared6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your reply. That's exactly what I've decided to do.. I also thought Meenu would learn to trust me though Maggie who is just a year older than he is. Meenu is very paranoid and shows signs that me may be an Alpha Male. He wants things on HIS terms, and he is EXTREMELY inteligent... He has approached me a couple of times since I first commented, but he will only tolerate a pet or 2.. maybe a chin scratch and he moves off.. When I approach him, I give him a tuna treat.. It has helped a little, but I pretty much leave him to himself and I let him roam the house at night and he seems to come out of his shell for about an hour or 2.. I wake up to BANG CRASH alot at 2 or 3am.. Maggie and Meenu like to bring HAVOC upon the house at night which I think is good for his confidence.. He still doesn't like 2 leggers though and I had to get a metal screen on the open windows because he was trying to escape.. I know deep down there is a sweet cat inside that scared mind of his..

It looks like you gave him raw meet at the beginning? Is that right? If so what was it?
@KittenSchool5 жыл бұрын
Hi Katerina, the treat was a bit of turkey from the deli, so it was cooked. Although cats eat nothing but raw meat in the wild and this would not hurt them, and many people these days spend lots of money on "raw" meat diets for the cats and dogs. But raw meat can contain parasites or pathogens, so I don't advise it unless it's from a certified raw food producer who can guarantee the safety of their product. I typically give my kitties very small bits of cheese, deli meat, or cat treats as rewards.

So I'm wondering. What do I do with a young cat about 12 months old who won't let me touch her? I adopted a feral kitty from a shelter who really loves my other cat and even likes to play with me while I'm using an fishingrot-kinda-toy but becomes terrified as soon as I'm moving let alone try touching her. I tried just letting her alone for the past months but it seems it's getting worse in the last weeks. Any suggestions?
@KittenSchool7 жыл бұрын
Hi Christina, I think you need to spend some time one on one with the cat in the bathroom or another place where she can't hide. You need to touch and pet her, using the toy and treats to get her close. She may be uncomfortable at first but do this in short sessions (watch all 6 of my Dormouse videos, if you haven't already--I show in the videos how to work with a cat this way). Leaving her alone won't help, it will only solidify her shyness of you. You need to take her out of her comfort zone by gently holding and petting her so she realizes how nice it is to be held! And treats, always treats, something she really likes (I use cheese and bits of sausage). She might always be a little shy but you can certainly train her (over time with work) that it is ok to be touched. Start now! The older she gets, the harder it is to socialize. Let me know your progress! xoxoxo

Kitten School Is that still wise if she gets real panicky while doing that? I tried that once and she jumped up when I got close to her and just hid in her litter box and she stopped being responsive to treats - like no sniffing, no nothing - as long as I was there... But idk maybe I'll bring my older cat around while I'm doing that to make her less stressed.. I'm just worried of kind of crossing the line with her

I have adopted two lovely 12 week old kittens. But they are v afraid of me. They won't let me near them. They play together & are v happy. But I need to to be able to touch them &hold them. Can you help me to do this? Rio
@KittenSchool6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rita! I would separate the kittens when you are doing your socialization work...so let one out to play and hang out with you for an hour or so, then switch. Sometimes I find that shy or fearful kittens can "reinforce" each other's behavior, so if you can work with each one on one you will probably have more success. At first, the kittens will probably pace, meow and cry, looking for their friend, but keep offering treats and just let her roam around and get used to the house and you. Meanwhile, you go on doing your own thing - watching tv, making dinner, working....just let the kitty wander a bit. When she gets close, offer a treat and try to engage her in some play using a wand-type toy. Once she settles down, try to pet her without picking her up, then walk away, and repeat. Do this a few times a day if you can. Your kittens are still very young and they will socialize, but you will need to invade their "safe zones" in order for them to realize that you are not just a thing that provides food and cleans the litter box - you are their Momma who deserves love and respect, and who will give lots of love back too! Keep working with them and let me know how things go!

I just got a 2 year old Male ragdoll and their first meeting did not go well my tuxedo Beemo is terrified and Meeshak was attacking him and the dog. So they are taking turns having the run of the house. They both sniff each others doors when they are out. Meeshak is still attacking the dog. We have to really watch him because Winston will not defend himself. Meeshak isn't using his claws so that's good. But he sticks him aggressively with his paws. I was wondering if the social box idea would work with getting them acclimated to each other. Letting them take turns in the box a couple times a day? Thank you for any advice.

My kitten hides when my friends comes ove r What should i do? Should i let them hold? Or it would make it more scared ?

Hi Annie! Well, you don't want stress your kitty if he's nervous around other people. I would try inviting one friend over and then going to a room where you can both sit on the floor and let your kitten sniff around and get used to a new person. Take in some toys to play with the kitten and offer treats when he interacts with you. When he is relaxed I have your friend offer a treat and then have her pet him gently, but dont have her pick him up just yet. Once he gets used to being around someone besides you, have more people come over and try the same thing. It takes a while, and honestly some cats never get used to people beyond their own family. Some of my own cats run and hide when we have people over, even though they are not at all shy around us! So don;t ever force your kitty, but try to introduce him to your friends in a very calm, quiet way. Good luck!

"putting him in the social box" ... It's a cage.
@KittenSchool6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is technically a cage, but it also is a great way to socialize kittens so they don't have to go back into a cage (at the shelter) and probably be euthanized.
