How To Make Hmong Steamed Rolls (Fawm Kauv/Banh Cuon)

Hello everyone,
Today I will show you how to make Steamed Rolls, one of my favorites dishes to cook and eat. Steamed Rolls (Banh Cuon) is actually a well-known Vietnamese dish. Many Hmong and other asian ethnicities are also big fans of this dish and incoporate their own recipe and twist to it, making it a little different. This recipe is so special because even when the steamed rolls become cold, it is still soft and chewy to eat. I always come back to this recipe. Let’s get to cooking!
❤️❤️❤️STEAMED ROLLS RECIPE❤️❤️❤️
Ingredients:
✅1 bag of red flour
✅2 bags of green tapioca starch flour
✅1 pack of ground pork
✅Green onions
✅Cilantro
✅Minced Garlic
✅Chicken powder stock
✅Onion Powder
✅Olive Oil (any oil is fine)
✅Panda Oyster Sauce
✅Black pepper and Salt
✅Water
✅Stir-Fry Seasoning Pork Flavor (optional)
✅Fried Onions (optional)
Anything else you would like to add for seasoning is fine. 🙂
1. Mix all the flours with 6 cups of water into a big bowl.
2. Boil a separate pot of 5 cups of water on low heat.
3. Pour one cup of the initial mixed flour into the boiled pot. Make sure to put heat on low, so it gradually thickens. If it’s too hot, the mixture in the pot will start to become sticky. Stir until the mixture in the pot thickens, then quickly pour the pot mixture into the initial bowl of mixture. Add one tablespoon of salt and oil and 5-6 more cups of water, depending how you like the consistency. Mix well. I prefer a thinner, less chewy consistency.
4. Stir fry one pack of ground pork. I like to add minced garlic, panda oyster sauce, and a thai stirfry/soup seasoning “pork” flavor. When pork is cooked, add your green onions and cilantro. Save some veggies for later to garnish the cooked steamed rolls. Turn off the stove. The green onions and cilantro will cook fast. Don’t overcook your ground pork.
When you cook the flour mixture, add a thin layer (I use a 1/2 measuring cup to scoop the flour mixture) of the mixture to the pan. You don’t want too much otherwise the roll will be too thick. It should cook no more than 30 seconds. When it’s ready, take the pan and flip it on a flat surface where you can add your ground pork. Fold two parallel sides in, then roll or fold your steamed roll.
Repeat steps until all your meat or flour mixture is used.
Many people including myself also like to eat this dish with a dipping pepper sauce. It adds a nice kick to it and makes it taste even better if you like spicy food!
