I’m inspired to do something similar for my upcoming 52nd birthday, especially given that celebrations have been all but nonexistent the last couple of years. When I saw the thumbnail I originally pictured using a grabber toy as a mech. I’m not great at ladder stitch, though. Would a baseball stitch work?

I love this, thanks so much! But I’m very allergic to rubber cement and spray glue sadly. Do you ever use craft glue, Elmer’s or wood glue. I think it could work, would just take longer to dry, be messier, and maybe not the same effect. Have you tried other adhesives?
