How to make OK dowels the fast easy way. No special tools or messing around with chisels required.

Dowels are very handy for reinforcing all kinds of joints, and are cheaper to buy than screws, but making them is even cheaper than that because it is free. I needed lots for a project and usually split the wood and carve the leading edge to fit in the sizing hole but ripping the sticks on the table saw as shown here is much faster. Ripping to size could also be done on a bandsaw, if you are into handtools a chisel would be the way to go.
I gave the drill a go, the result was fine but it was a bit slow, both to prepare the stick to fit the chuck and sizing hole and to run it through. An arbour press would probably do this well, but if you wanted to get that involved you would probably just buy dowel.
