🔥 How to Culture Copepods - • How to Culture Copepods
In this episode I will show you How to make Phytoplankton. Phytoplankton is easy to culture and can be done with a few items you have around your house. Phytoplankton is food for copepods such as tisbe pods, tiger pods, rotifers, mysid and even used to protect clownfish fry when breeding clownfish. Phytoplankton is a live food at the base of the food chain right above zoo plankton. It only takes 5 days to culture phytoplankton and very little effort on your part. Phytoplankton can be dosed in small amounts to your saltwater aquarium to promote the growth of corals and microfauna. Be careful not to add to much as phytoplankton is very high in nutrients such as nitrate or NO3 and phosphate or PO4. Typically I would only add 5-10 ml daily to a 100 gallon reef aquarium for best results.
Items you will need to make Phytoplankton:
Phytoplankton - amzn.to/3KUSiFp
F/2 (phyto food) - amzn.to/3mgDPcD
1 gallon glass container - amzn.to/41HothP
2 gallon plastic ontainer - amzn.to/3mtpoCj
Air Pump - amzn.to/2PIkO01
Air Line - amzn.to/2ZhekbQ
Rigid Airline Tubing - amzn.to/3KX4Hsw
Clamp Light Fixture - amzn.to/2Mk555d
Par38 bulb: amzn.to/3ZoS2ms
The LED panel I use: amzn.to/3ZlCRud
Salt - amzn.to/3SSiSkL
Tig Copepods - amzn.to/3KTKdkt
Tisbe Copepods - amzn.to/3JeJ6ug
Apocalypse Pods - amzn.to/41KD8Zx

Awesome video Brian. Thanks for answering my questions on the live stream the other day about pods. Can't wait to see that video. Quick question on the Phyto. I bought a bottle of the Reef Nutrition Live Phytoplankton (Black cap) and was wondering if I can use that along with the F2 to make more phyto or should I start with something like the Sin City? Is there a difference??
@BriansAquariums
@BriansAquariums 6 жыл бұрын
Reefkpr there are different types of phytoplankton. You cant culture any phyto from Reef Nutrition. They put something in there that prevents it from being cultured once they bottle it up. You need Nannochloropsis phytoplankton. That is what this is.

How much my friend I should dose?

You can use a small wave make. I use an air pump and air stone. I based my dosage on 1ml per 10 gal...but in your case I would dose 25-50ml every 2-3 days. Watch your nutrient level, if they rise too high reduce your dosage. Dump it all in your fuge where your pods live so they can eat it before it gets too diluted. I would even turn off your return pump for 15 minutes so the pods can eat.

(If you have no fry you will still need to dump 1/2 culture down drain or strain the rotifers out and add to reef tank) 3. Add fresh saltwater back to rotifer culture. 4. Add in more phyto to rotifer culture. 5. Repeat in 2-3 days. amzn.to/2TMhkdT - this company is great for supplies. You're the only person I can think to ask, do you ever have a buildup at the bottom of your cultures? Does that mean my culture is dying off? It's pretty green and looks healthy but there are clumps at the bottom
@BriansAquariums
@BriansAquariums Жыл бұрын
It's normal. The buildup is dead phytoplankton cells. I usually stir my cultures with a dedicated new and clean wooden spoon daily. The air bubbles are just not enough to keep everything suspended, so some phyto cells will settle. When I harvest my phyto I leave the bottom inch or two behind to avoid putting these dead cells in my tank. I do not think it would hurt, but I dont want to take a chance. You will also see this buildup happening in your bottles in the refrigerator if you do not shake your bottles daily. I hope that answered your question. If you have anymore feel free to ask away!
