I am forwarding this video to my daughter who’s an artist. One thing I’ve learned about artists, is that you guys have the sharpest eye for color, hues, and tones. It freaks her out when the colors are “off” on a print. It usually looks fine to me!😄 I must say that I love living with an artist. I’ve learned to see things in a whole different way.

My mum was an artist and I used to love watching the process from nothing to something. Sometimes the artwork would look like nothing, or I would say to myself that's not looking right you need to change it. I didn't have the vision though. They would always get finished and have me thinking "Well I don't know shit bout art" 😂

Hi listen I am a professional photographer with 34 years of experience. I enjoyed your video however, I think you’re leaving one thing out. If you calibrate your monitor and use color profiles, your monitor will be exactly like the print and you won’t have to go through the time and expense to make adjustments every time. You need to match the color profile of your output to the color profile of the printer. Ask your printer if they provide a ICC profile for their output. Then you convert your output to the color profile of the printer you should get a perfect match the first time.

@TheArtistOliverJames

@@hljohn64 I think you missed the point... representation matters. She is beautiful, knowledgeable, has great diction, all of those things, and probably a ton of other amazing qualities we don't get to see. Me acknowledging her blackness or the fact that she is a woman and that she is reflecting a positive light that other black women can see themselves in and maybe encourage them to pursue their dreams (regardless of the lack of opportunities and representation) doesn't diminish any of those qualities or anything else about her. Google WHY REPRESENTATION MATTERS before you respond to this.
@TheArtistOliverJames
@TheArtistOliverJames 2 жыл бұрын
@Leona Bastet Did you read my reply to someone else saying the same thing before you commented under this??? I am going to say no because I already answered that question. My suggestion would be to read my reply and google "why representation matters" before replying again... or do it and don't reply again... either way is cool. Also, I don't miss a thing, I watch a lot of tutorials and most of them are by white men and women and they are extremely informative just like this one, which is why I wrote this comment. Also, would like to question why me mentioning her blackness bothers you so much, it's very telling of your mindset.

@@applecrave1097 You can set up your own filters in your photo-editing software. If you set up one for each printer you use, when you put something in there that you need to print then pick the filter, you know how it should look and can tweak it. There are tutorials on KZbin for most of the popular photo-editing softwares, though finding them can be challenging sometimes! I have one guy I go back to every time I need to learn another thing about my software, cos I know I understand what he's saying! 😂

Great info, look at setting your white balance with a gray card. That will eliminate allot of the color seeking you are having to do. The camera when set to auto white balance seeks a neutral gray tone to set it. With your wall being white it uses that as the 15% gray tone. Photographers commonly carry gray cards that they use to set WB in the given lighting condition. Your camera can do it I have a D810 and had a D7000 before all Nikons DSLRs will allow you to set the custom WB. This is great for taking pics in the snow as well, your snow will come out white and not have that blue cast you see in so many outdoor winter shots. Hope it saves you some editing and trips to the printer.

This is great advice @Jason's Trike Adventures. Thanks.
@likeawhispr
@likeawhispr 3 жыл бұрын
@@margaretowuadey I would advise using "manual" camera setting, setting your aperture for best image quality which is usually smaller than f/5.6 and somewhere around f/8 depending on lens. When doing reproduction work, set the camera to base ISO and compensate for the smaller aperture and ISO with a longer shutter speed. Later, invest in higher quality lens and higher resolution camera since you're printing near 20x30in prints, otherwise you're wasting the capability of your awesome printer. With the right printer and paper profile, you can get pretty accurate reproductions without many reprints. You're doing a kick a** job with an awesome channel and I hope you keep it up!

Great video... really really nice work... A few things to add. The important thing about having white walls in the room you photograph the paintings is that depending on your light set up, you wont get any colored reflective light. If you had green walls for example, the bounced light might give a green hue to the photos, that you would then have to try and remove in processing the photos. At which point you get in to the nightmare of trying to rebalance the color to match the painting. And... Another quick tip is most cameras now have a remote app for your phone or tablet, for controlling the camera. This allows you to take the shot remotely, but more importantly, gives you a larger view of the image before taking the photo. This helps with keeping the shot squared and sharp. And... It's easier if the painting is directly behind your computer when editing. It's the same trick as painting a still life or model. You want as little distance for the travel of your eye between the two subjects. You can almost look at both things at exactly the same time and so see the direct comparison. Rather than having to check back and forth. And... finally :D What you want to do is get the color profile that your printer uses for printing and use that in your photo editing software... this makes a huge difference and means you will have a far closer representation of the print on screen, prior to printing samples, meaning there should be far less correction needed after you get the sample back. This cuts down on having to almost artificially change the image from the painting, so that the print will match the painting. It would have cut down a fair bit on the blue issue you had here for example. It can also help to match the screens profile to the softwares profiles. So rather than adjusting brightness of the screen etc. by hand, you let the computer match the profile to the software being used and have it as a preset for editing. it's still not perfect, but combined with the correct color profile it really helps with the prints. As I say, amazing work, and really nice video. Not enough people share this side of being an artist.

I love your work! - tiny suggestion - If you use a retractable steel ruler to find the height of the middle of the canvas and move the height of the centre of the lens to that height, and then do the same with the centre of the canvas from the wall to the right, and put the lens centre at the same distance from the wall, you should minimise the stretching you have to do to with software to make the image square, as it should be very near to spot on in the digital image. Lenses generally get sharper images as you stop down. Usually having the lens wide open will produce the softest image you can get. That said it's working great for you!

I’m a fairly new artist who needs to make quality prints of some of my canvas paintings, bc some people are asking to buy from me. I only began painting to feel better, & never expected to be selling my work. I was wondering if this requires a printer who specializes in artwork? I wondered if you had your prints done in Giclee or inkjet? I was also hoping you might give some info on printing costs, & do you pass them on entirely to your customers? Is that standard? Thank you for DBT advice you can give 😊

It looks like a luster finish because it doesn’t have a weird glossy look. Is this right? A luster finish? Also, can you tell us the weight of the paper? Thanks so much! Of course we want to know the name of your printer, but you’re probably reluctant to share. Don’t blame you on that!

Hi Melissa, How did you obtain permission to use celebrity images for your art? I would like to paint certain musicians, but was told I need to get permission to use their images.
@CikisHelyzet
@CikisHelyzet 3 жыл бұрын
You do not need permission to create another work of art. Ppl cannot copyright their faces. You may run into problems if you take someone else’s work (ie a photograph) and put it in your work, or claim it as your own. A painting is an entirely independent piece of work even if you are using a photo as a reference. Hope that helps!

@@CikisHelyzet but like the Rihanna image, could the photographer sue her for using their photograph to paint then sell?

I think you can use photos as a reference for art, but not copying exactly if its copyrighted. I asked one of my favorite photographers on instagram if i would be able to use her photos to draw and maybe sell, and she told me that they were copyrighted so i wouldnt be able to

The answer is yes, i think she's going to get in trouble selling prints... if you are creating fan art whether for profit or not, any copyrighted character or use of trademark in a description or title without prior written consent from the copyright owner, then selling fan art is illegal but making fan art is not illegal.

No. Art is protected by copyright laws as long as your art is not an exact reproduction of the original. If she used a picture from a photo she found online and put it on a shirt, that would be an issue. Her artwork is original and therefore is hers under copyright laws. Also, public figures tend to be subject to public domain laws.
