I had a wonderful piano teacher who urged me to set aside a piece of music I had worked on for several weeks and come back to the piece after a break of several weeks. She said so much happens passively during the break that when you return with fresh eyes, you make discoveries of interpretation that you would otherwise miss. She was right, and so is Hampton! It's pretty much applicable to any longterm endeavor, that you benefit & grow from mixing it up.
@Post-ModernCzechoslovakianWar3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the anecdote. For extra info and clarification what did you do during the break? Did you work on other piano music or was it a complete break? If you continued piano, but worked on something else did you also play less, the same amount, or more? I'm having burnout with various things I want to do. While it's not piano It may help me know to how plan learning from other peoples' experience.

I've heard this advice for ADHD before. Just ride the wave of motivation. And when the next wave comes, ride that one. You will get back to the original task, especially if you stop laying guilt & pressure on yourself about it. And if you don't, maybe it wasn't right to begin with.
@ZizalaonfireАй бұрын
I do have adhd and unfortunatelly, it doesnt really work for us 😂 because the waves are incredibly unpredictable and they often never come in times we actually need the thing or the motovation suddenly stops just as we are about to finish something. So the only thing that works for me is being very consistent and being very strict with myself. I am currently in med school and of i were to follow this advice, id drop out in first semester

Gonna send this video to every single language learning app. They all insist on daily streak tracking as like THE MAIN FEATURE and every single time it just says to me, "If you're going to take one day off you may as well just quit"
@genericplantlife3 ай бұрын
So true. I try to tell myself that breaking the streak doesn't matter, but something inside me feels like if I break the streak I'll never go back because the count resets to zero days. Then when I have no motivation to do learning that day, I just go through the motions so as not to break the streak, but I'm not actually learning or retaining anything.
@yvrelna3 ай бұрын
Been there done that. You can break your streaks though. There's been times where I just let the streaks break, take a few months for a break from the app, and come back. That's perfectly fine. Sometimes I don't completely stop learning the language when I break from the app. Often, I was just switching to a different activity, e.g. working on reading a book or game on the language. It's fine to break your streak and continue again later on; you still did that streak and you won't be losing progress with just a few weeks break. Keeping streaks are good to help maintain consistency, but you just need to know how to make good use of them for yourself.
@AdamBechtol3 ай бұрын
@@genericplantlife Mmmm
@NilZed13 ай бұрын
Every app that pushes a streak eventually leads me to click-thru days where I am not doing the things, just clicking through to maintain the streak. (Or I redefine what the habit I’m skipping means: did I make my to do list tomorrow? Sure, I did. It’s one mental item: go to work. Done. ) Esp with fitness or other self improvement/habit building apps: weekends vs weekdays and holidays and illness happen. You can’t do the thing every day. And skipping should be fine so long as you come back to your program. Apps should track your skipped days and push maintaining a ratio of skipped to active. A 1:2 ratio is a big improvement from 0:0. Maintaining a 1:7 ratio is fabulous. 1:14 is better and 1:21 would be super impressive. Learning how to come back is as important as learning to be consistent.

I have very low zero interest in Calisthenics (which I'm assuming is the main theme of this channel), but this video alone sold me on that sub button around the halfway mark. I've learned (by banging my head against the wall time and time again - figuratively of course!) that negative feedback and self-talk has done virtually nothing for me. It's pretty much the definition of counter-productive behavior. I still do *some* of it, very occasionally, because I do think a small amount of tough love helps me keep going every now and again. But the biggest game changer in terms of improving my life and getting to a place I want to be, I've found, has been positive self-talk and acceptance. Couple that with some useful productivity tips like note taking or periodization at the gym (as mentioned in this video), with no guilt and hard lines, and it's frankly amazing to me how far I've come. Now, I'm still very far from being one of those IG coaches that seem to have everything figured out. Especially coming off of a deep well of depression, I know I'm not exactly near the productivity standard that social media seems to praise. But part of that self-talk and acceptance is realizing the only person I should be comparing myself with is my past self. And in comparison to my past self, today me is doing fucking amazing. I can see this video follows that same path - productivity tips where you can and where it works for you + acceptance and kindness towards your own process. Younger me would've loved to find this video many years ago. And even today, the realization that I could try an "objective periodization", where I switch gears and priorities in a revolving cycle to ride that motivation, feels like one hell of an eureka moment. Thanks! Edit: I also find it interesting how this video goes into detail with examples specifically about weight lifting and learning an instrument, which are essentially my two main objectives today outside of a career. And who really knows? If things work out well enough, maybe, just maybe, those can become career options too one day (as someone who's struggled with finding work I can do and enjoy my whole life).

Regarding the motivation part of it; there is an effect called the backwards law (TM by Mark Manson) and that is that we wait (or dread) for something to happen before we do something, instead we should do it the other way 'round. Example; we can be waiting for "the right moment" to start a project, and we will wait forever. However, what we should do is to start with the smallest simple step that will allow a bit of progress, and eventually, half way through the process, the right opportunity will show up at the right time, and that's when it will bear fruit. Motivation doesn't spark your movement, putting your shoes on and showing up to the gym, will motivate you to actually exercise. Just show up, and if at the door you're not feeling like it, turn around and go home. Try again tomorrow.

The perfect video for my week at music camp! (And someone whose life contains a *lot* of unfinished side-quests. 😂) One recent change I made as I try to balance fitness and violin (both of which I wanted to do in the morning) finally feels like it *fits* me. Warming up twice seemed to take a lot of time, doing the routine first made me want to rest instead of play my instrument, and violin *is* a physical activity so only warming up between practice and excercise wasn't a good option either. The present solution? Warmup (focused on wrists, with some whole-body movement) - violin - hybrid calisthenics! 🎉 (Although for the week at string camp I'm just exercising in the morning, then stretching a bit again before the sessions begin)

This video hit at the perfect time for me I’m experiencing burnout in several areas of my life, namely in a part of my training that I do every week. It is a form of intense cardio primarily targeting my mental fortitude, not physical strength As you’d expect it is easy to burnout because of this. While I have not made a decision yet how I will address this, it has been weighing on my mind. On one hand, forgoing consistency could lead to less mental strength, but it could also lead to more passion when correct substitutions/modulations are made, as the video correctly pointed out. It’s a tough choice that I will have to weigh on my own, but I am thankful to have the information this video provided to assist in that decision. Thanks

A video Brookes Eggleston made about making progress in art comes to my mind. Its arguing with a sissyphean metaphor the opposite. That one should stick to one boulder to make progress and push it all the way to the top, and then go down to work on the next boulder. "Shiny object syndrome" is basically going from boulder to boulder and letting the boulders slip back down. I think in the end, this advice applies to different levels of progress. Ive seen as an artist that people doing both have progressed. That single focus applies more to building up fundamentals first. The advice here i think applies more to people who are stuck making progress or plateuau at some point in their progress.

After getting the basics, it's normal to chance, what you're doing: Learning an instrument means, start learning the music theory and your sight-reading and hearing and at the end your playing will change a lot. And then, you start an second instrument - if you want to study music, you have to play two or more instruments at the same time (and university): Violine and piano (piano at a lower level, violine very, very high). Or flute and piano oder guitar. And so on. And I heared, that soccer-player startet ballet for coordination and a better control over the body. Or in winter: go swimming and in the summer, running (outside). Have fun and love what you do! And try something new some time ...

I was wondering, if you could talk more about alternative ways to engage similar muscles to the ones that pullups engage, like back widow for example (I don't know if it's actually an alternative but this came up while I was trying to search for alternatives). I don't have any pullup bars available near me and every other way to do them in my home feels too unsafe for me so I'm not consistent with them unfortunately

As long as you need to get all of them done at some point! On the other hand, I relate to this sort of "artist's perfectionism" and it's something we have to try to moderate. If we recognize there's nothing we can reasonably change, sometimes we just need to publish it and move on. That avoids having an endless pile of growing "work in progress" projects. Our perfectionism is sometimes just a guise for insecurity - for some things anyway! So it can be good to find a balance.

I would like to know, since most likely many or someone else has a similar problem. I’m not sure how true this is or where did I get this from, but in psychology it is believed that human emotions strive for stability. Not too sad (depression) and not too happy (I don’t know if there is a term) for a long time. In my case, I return to stability too quickly. As soon, as something bad or good stops, I am already in a neutral mood, which is why motivation sounds like a ridiculous joke for me. Motivation lasts no more than a minute, and then it’s my attempts to convince myself that this is fun or interesting. And taking a break from something means that I will never return to it(in most cases).

Well, what is said here applies psychologically right. Your brain will naturally pick things up faster if you learned something and relearn that stuff after a while. What about physical muscles? I dont think they have preestablished muscle fibers that reactivate after getting weak for a while right. Thats why we need to put in the same amount of work regardless of how much expirience we might have with calesthenics. All in all im glad you are back in shape, but I would also like to hear what you have to say for what mightve helped you spring back.
