Hey everyone!
Wanted to share my car paint that I use all the time, apart from one secret in the recipe!
Of course this is just a base material, so any texture painting, imperfections and more, come after this. But this base provides you with a great starting point to get your car projects off the start line.
Drop a comment if you need any help.

Thanks for this tutorial. I skipped the smudges for the moment and created the group as you show. Then I set one with red like you had for both colors... and duplicated it setting those two colors to black. Trying to create that "hyper" blue or red.. How would you go about creating this?

This video is really nice, learned a lot by watching it for the past few hours and trying things for myself, but I'm not sure which version of Blender you are using. I'm using 3.6 and some of the options that you have are not displaying on my end such as the 'Voronoi Texture" and "Noise Texture" don't have an option named 'Lacunarity' few others also are missing things. For example when I created the 'Principled BSDF' I have options like 'GGX' , 'Random Walk' and more while on your end you did not have such things. Not sure how essential the missing things are, since I'm currently doing some changes on the 'light' and I haven't yet gotten a feeling for the car. But other than that the video was really nice, wish that you had the time to make more videos such as adding vinyl, tail lights, head lights, turn signals that are working etc. Additionally maybe add a pack of those 'Smurges' as some people haven't gotten to the part to have their own Assets yet 😅 Edit: including your Render properties as there's a difference between using 'Evee' and the other engines including the noise thresholds and samples.

Darn I was really paying attention but when you clicked the Node that says Linear Light, right at 4:38, I don't know what the Linear Light Node attached to. Hope I'll see it because I like how you teach. I think you linked it with the Normal Map.
@ethdavis
@ethdavis 3 ай бұрын
Hey! I just previewed the node, I didn’t plug it into anything at that point:) to preview nodes you need to enable the node wrangler add-on or extension and preset CTRL SHIFT Left click on a node to preview it
@Sean-kp1to

what keybind did you use to connect the linear light at 4:37?

You have to enable the node wrangler add on, it’s already built in. Then press CTRL - SHIFT left click on the node to view it

It’s called realistic touch on blender marketplace. But it’s essential just black and white textures, just already setup :)

Great tutorial! i got problems with the Voronoi Texture creating the normals. With big surfaces and a lower roughness value in the glossy shader, the flakes appear in a square shaped highlight around the light source. I would expect them to be circular. Exchanging the Voronoi with a noise texture fixes the problem, but the shape of the flakes itself are obviously weird then. Any hints? This is driving me crazy for days now!

Hey there! Thanks for sharing, great tips! Any suggestions on an alternative method to isolate the highlights where to apply the voronoi texture? For some reason my normal input is pushing all of it to the back of the model in one concentrated area.
@ethdavis
@ethdavis 7 ай бұрын
Hmm.. maybe try F3 - Recalculate normals, as well as making sure you’re scale and rotation is applied 1. If that doesn’t solve it let me know :)

The video is really helpful and easy to replicate. I only have one problem: the material looks exactly the same when applied to a sphere, but when I apply the same material to my vehicle models, the flakes and the orange peel are not visible. Does anyone know why this could be?
@ethdavis
@ethdavis 4 ай бұрын
You probably need to apply scale to the object :)

OMG I better had found this video before starting the whole rendering phase of my project D: 10/10 tutorial out there considering its public and free, others would just place a Patreon link and offer it for 5 bucks XD Im currently starting to involve myself into the journey of 3D studying and CGI artworks... so i have 2 major questions if you dont mind to answer: First of all, im currently working on a laptop and you know what that means, overheating, render interruptions from nowhere... Should i invest for a Desktop PC for my next hardware? Being the student i am, i probably will move around from city to city searching for studies so obviously laptops are way more easier to carry on... but the Desktop PC offers me better performance and less heating... And for the second question: Im have been studying Autodesk Maya for 2 years now and its the only 3D software im used to use. Do you recommend me to start learning Blender? Or should i just keep going with Maya? Usually people answer me with "If you started with Maya, keep on with it" but each time i try to search some tutorials for Maya only shows up Blender tutorials, and i also think that comparing Blender with Maya, i dont see the difference of why Maya is sooooo expensive, i could do the same with Blender and for free :/ I hope you dont get bored reading all this haha and btw im Spanish so sorry if my english is not that good ;)
@ethdavis
@ethdavis 7 ай бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the kind words on the video, trying to provide as much as I can :) There’s some great laptops out there pre than enough power, if you are moving around a lot then it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get a laptop. Computers are also really good so that’s up to you! In terms of maya vs blender, maya is the industry standard, if you’re trying to get a job in a studio then I would definitely go with that. If you’re trying to become freelance than blender is the way to go! Yes they both do the same thing but companies don’t use blender that often. Thanks!
