The first recipe I tried from Amber on myaquariumclub.com did not work out for my tank. It wasn't because it wasn't nutritional or that it was bad. My snails and shrimp just didn't like it. So I searched around for some more information on snail jello and found a KZbin video by Nemo Keller on how to make it using fresh veggies. I combined the two techniques and gave it my own twist using the ingredients and methods that I had available to me. So here is MY recipe thanks to the inspiration from these two amazing people. It is called snail jello, but this recipe is actually really good and safe for shrimp to eat, too.
Ingredients:
- 8-9 Crushed Berry Flavored 1000mg TUMS tablets or 10-12 750mg TUMS tablets
- 1/4 tsp of spirulina algae
- 1 1/2 tsp (about a spoonful if you're using a regular spoon) of cuttlefish bone (This can be found in the bird section of the pet store.)
- 1 jar of baby food (Must have at least 4% calcium.)
- 1 box (4 packets) of Knox Original Unflavored Gelatine
- A handful of algae wafers
- A handful of chopped broccoli
- A handful of cucumber
- A handful of kale (I used just 1 leaf)
- A handful of collard greens (I used just 1 leaf)
- A handful of baby spinach (I grabbed about 7 leaves)
**You can pretty much use any type of green vegetables that you have available and that your snails can eat. I chose these specifically because they are high in calcium, and snails (and shrimp) need a source of calcium for shell growth.
[You can find many of these ingredients at your local grocery store/pet store for less than $2. And it's okay. You don't have to be exact, so don't freak out if you do a little more or a little less.]
I have outlined the exact steps I used in the above video using the ingredients listed, but these steps below are what I would change in my methods if I made this again.
1. Prepare your powdered mixture.
Grind down the TUMS tablets into powder. Put into a small bowl with spirulina algae and set aside for later. (I used the end of a vegetable peeler, but it would probably be easier if you had an actual spice grinder or pill grinder).
2. Prepare your vegetables.
Chop your vegetables up into small pieces so that you can put them in a blender. They don't need to be really tiny. Just small enough that they won't break your blade.
3.Prepare your blended mixture.
Grind down the algae wafers into powder. Set aside. Use a knife to shave the cuttle bone into powder. When you have about 1 1/2 teaspoons, give it a quick chop and set aside with powdered wafers. Pour baby food into blender. Fill baby food jar with BOTTLED water and pour into blender. Now pour veggies, algae wafers, and cuttle bone into blender. Puree.
4. Cook your jello mixture.
Set stove to low. Pour blended mixture into a pot or pan. Mix gently to avoid creating bubbles and to get rid of any bubbles already in the mixture. When the mixture starts to bubble, add a little bit of gelatin at a time while mixing to prevent clumps. When all 4 packets have been used, keep mixing for another few minutes to reduce it down to a more mushy texture (instead of thin liquid). Then mix in the powdered mixture you set aside in STEP 1. Again, add a little bit at a time while mixing to prevent clumps.
5. Cool your snail jello.
Pour your jello mixture into a container that will fit into your freezer. I used a tupperware container, and it was filled up to about 1/2"-3/4" high. (You can fill it higher, but the thicker the mixture, the longer it will take to cool.) Put into the freezer for about an hour. I usually do the "poke test" and poke it once or twice to see if it's solid. IT SHOULD NOT BE FROZEN - just cooled enough to become solid. When it has reached this point, plop it out of the container, and cut it into the size you'll need for your tank. I have a 5-gallon tank, so I cut them into 1/8" cubes and feed once every 1-2 weeks. If you have a larger tank, cut them into larger cubes. =)
6. Storing your snail jello.
You can keep enough in the fridge for 1 week and freeze the rest. They can go straight from the freezer into the tank.
The original recipe I used can be found here: www.myaquariumclub.com/snail-j...

I got all of my shrimp, snails, food, and lava rock from ShrimpMart. They have great customer service and experience with Opae'Ula shrimp. You can purchase everything you need to start your own tank through their website here: shrimpmart.bigcartel.com/
ShrimpMart KZbin Channel: / shrimpmart
*NOTE: The way my camera catches the light makes the tank look cloudy. Neither the lighting nor the tank look that way in person. The light is bright, but doesn't shimmer like it does in the video, and the tank is actually crystal clear.

This is a great recipe. I used a zucchini instead of a cucumber because that is what was in the garden. It was a feeding frenzy! All the shrimp, snails and crabs LOVED it. Thank you!!

Yes I did get then from shrimp mart. Both the dwarf and regular size crabs are about the same size as the same size pipi snails. A regular sized one would be awesome in your tank, they are completely underwater

For the spirulina do you just add it in the tank or how do you use that for food for your snails? Thanks!

Hi Christine! I love your channel. I just made some snail jello myself and my nerite isn't quite interested in it yet but my red cherries are nibbling on it when they come across it. How long can a cube stay in the tank for before it goes bad? Thank you!

Thanks for the recipe. My question though is why so much calcium? Isn't there enough calcium for opae in water? (Marine salt contains calcium). I'm not sure about snails though...

These are freshwater snails and shrimp, so they won't be getting much calcium from the water

My snails are not picky and will swarm anything dead in the tank, including a dead shrimp I found yesterday :( But it looks like you have black racer nerites. I guess it's 6 years too late, but those are notorious for only eating algae.

how about for a single snail? Edit: Today is November 5, 2017 and I have successfully incubated my first egg clutch! They are so tiny, I thought the water was dirty! Now I'm back on this vid to feed these hundreds of hungry snails, completely disregard my original comment, how much for about one hundred and one snails (counting the mother)?

i love cracking the shells and watching my res turtle chew the snail up! I was trying to find out how to keep snails because i am trying to breed them for turtle food :) this is kinda sad to some but not to me, I love holding opened scissors in front of their eyes and when they pop their gross eyeball stalk out, I cut his whole eye off! Very funny and satisfying!
