I made a Castile soap with my own homemade juniper vinegar in the lye solution in place of the water and it turned color like that, but more of a bright orange color. I have added honey to a couple of batches, but not in the lye solution. I put mine in just after trace along with some herbs. The soap was really nice in that it felt like it put a nice protective layer on your skin, not heavy or anything, but lite and refreshing.

Who woulda thought you could make soap in a shaker this way. brilliant. The soap looks cool, rice bubbles hehe. The honey will provide a beautiful lather I have tried pure olive oil with 3% sugar. Hi Elly! I really enjoyed your sharing today and the idea of experimenting. I made my first batch of soap this week on my little farm, after watching all of your sharing. It was exciting and fun. I am not sure how to gauge if it was successful, but it’s beautiful. It emulsified quickly which was tricky but otherwise it went well. I am not sure how to share or to show you, but I thought it fun to tell. I am a community herbalist and teacher, so my olive oil was infused with calendula. It was an oat and honey beginner soap. Warm regards from Norway! x

This was good fun to watch Elly. I guess if you had't hurried the firming up process by putting in the oven it would have eventually hardened without the 'silicone rash'?
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Marion, glad you liked it! Yes, it would have hardened by itself but in that mould it wouldn't have gelled, and I like my soap to go through a full gel phase. The only trick I know to avoid silicone rash is to wait for the soap to firm up a bit before it goes into the oven, but it was taking forever to set up so I pushed ahead, hence the rash/bubbles. I'm keen to try again another day when I have more time because I love gelled soap and love my silicone moulds! I got silicone rash in my nice flower moulds once. Wasn't pretty :(
@marionlacey1986
@marionlacey1986 3 жыл бұрын
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Thanks for that explanation. I am all for gelling my soap too and honestly the silicone rash wouldn't worry me a bit. I have the flower moulds too and next time I am in Kmart will look out for the rectangular ones for small batches like yours. They weren't available when I was last in there but that was a while ago. I find the big rectangular wooden box ones online with silicone inserts are a bit costly for me right now with our current joint medical expenses. 🐾
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
If you wanted to make this soap I would just make a larger batch in any old container (a rectangular tupperware or something?), line the mould with paper and gel the soap as you normally would for a log mould batch. I am going to make another batch of this, larger, with my stick blender and do it that way. I like my silicone moulds but log/block mould batches are great too (much easier to gel!).

@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

Probably, but it may not have enough heat to fully gel without the added warmth of the oven. If the oils were warmed that may work.. Depends on the ambient temperature/climate too! Is cold here now.

Hi Elly, I love watching your videos. I see many people using sugar in the lye water. Why is that? What does the sugar do to the soap. I think you said it helps accelerating the gel phase. Is this the only reason? Thank you 😊

That is brilliant! I've always been interested in making soap but put it off coz I would lose my arms mixing with a whisk and didnt want to buy a stick blender for it as I'm a complete beginner but now with this I can finally do it! THANK YOOOUU for the brilliant idea! You made my day! A question - what kind of a soap recipe would be great for use with slightly hard water? The water we use is ground water, which is hard and not soft at all. Any recommendations on what to do? thanks!

Thank you, I'm so happy that this has given you a good option for your soap making! I'm not sure about hard water soap, sorry, it's an area of research I haven't got to yet! I would say you may want to make a high lathering soap with lots of coconut oil, because hard water will kill the lather quite a lot I think. Some kind of acidifying ingredient could help too, not sure. Good question, I hope you can find some more answers with an internet search, I will research at some stage too.

Thank you. Interesting idea but they say not to use glass with lye - it can become etched and lose strength. I don't think it's needed either to be honest, the shaking agitation seems to do the job quite well.

I would only recommend plastic! I don't recommend using glass at all for soap making, it can be weakened by the lye apparently, and you'd have quite a disaster on your hands if you dropped it and it broke!

I follow all your videos of soap making which you explain beautifully. I have tried to make your aloe Vera, Castile, 100% coconut soaps - coconut was very hard to cut after 15 hours while a aloe was very soft after 2 days. Please could you tell me how do we know when is the best time to cut a soap
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alpa, it really depends on the recipe, as you have discovered! Some oils make very hard soap, some make soft soap. It depends on the water amounts used too. More water means softer soap generally. The aloe soap used both soft oils and lots of liquid. Coconut oil soap is notoriously hard. It's best to treat each soap as unique and just cut it when it is firm enough to do so :)

Great idea! I tried bringing a batch to trace by stirring just to see now long it would actually take. It wasn’t horrible. It took a total of an hour and I didn’t stir every minute. The shaker is an even better alternative. Could probably even be done in a jar without the pour spout?

Elly, this is genius! Always wanted to have a go at soap making but the large quantities put me off. A couple of questions: could you use coconut oil instead of olive oil? As it’s a solid oil and would need to be heated, I wonder how that would affect the recipe? And do you cover your bars when you cure them for 6 weeks? (sorry if you’ve explained this in another video). You are a super inspirational person! 🙏🏻
@feezees9522
@feezees9522 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Anni, you can make soap using just coconut oil but you would need to up the superfat as otherwise it would be very very drying on the skin and that would be uncomfortable for most people. (See Ellys recent laundry soap video where she explains it) The coconut oil should be melted but it melts very easily. You don't want it hot, just until it's liquid. For curing your bars, you need them to be exposed to air so the water can evaporate. Some people have them in fruit crates so they're semi covered and protected from dust. Some put them in airing cupboards but from what I've seen, most people just have them on racks / shelves. Mine are just on racks in part so that most of the soap is exposed. As well as Elly's videos on how to make soap, I found the I Dream In Soap channel to be really helpful. She (Lisa) has a step by step set of videos. Also Katie from Royalty Soap has a set of beginners videos, a really easy (but nice) recipe and you can download instructions. I found that I picked up tips from each of them. I hope this helps.
