Overall it's a nice result but I think you used too much geo for what you were trying to achieve. If you're going to use opacity anyway, there's no reason to cut out the silhouette. You could use a simple plane and just add some cuts if you really wanted to bend it a bit. For something like foliage, this would be used everywhere in a game and too much geo would really add up quick.
@3dextrude
@3dextrude 5 жыл бұрын
True, it is good to cut it out as well even if it adds more geo to avoid too much overdraw. Overdraw can get really bad if you don't cut it as close to the shape as you can. I didn't add the cuts to add bending more than I did to avoid too much overdraw. Your point is good too because you also don't want to go too far and add too much geo.

1. why in 6:41 you have put your low poly plane almost in between of the other plant have you had any trouble baking from that? 2. and also from the lower part or root stems have you not get enough depth because again you put the low poly almost in their middle? just looking on the grass makes me itch like why is that supposed to be why is it to be like that? 7:14 Ii see you doing the front and rear is that fine? have you got any error with it because the plane was in the middle? 3. this is great for past prototyping but isn't good/bad to separate each plant atlas instead work in a single species per map with different variation? btw your content always a great treat to me in the morning
@benhardwiesner6963

Foliage like this produces very much unused whiteroom in your texture when you make an own image for every plant... In this way you can puzzle a square out of many plant uvs to fill up as much space as possible. When doing that, a gameengine as an example only needs to load a single material for a wide variety of seperate objects. So its even more efficient.
@pawpotsRS
@pawpotsRS 5 жыл бұрын
@@benhardwiesner6963 but maybe for a game where plant change in terms of weather and season like harvest moon do you think can input a box or square to automatically select specific area in the UV when winter is coming like the grass will be turn half white? also for the grass like when it becomes fall the leaves start to color desaturated brown isn't much easier to code to change the map rather than include them in all single map? also it can be beneficial for the programmer to separate some not all map when it comes to procedural map change?
@pawpotsRS
@pawpotsRS 5 жыл бұрын
@@benhardwiesner6963I think that /or maybe I can fit all types of foliage in one map as a variation for only "1" season for example rather than 1 plant 1 map. got it! though I'm in a middle of testing my theory about this workflow although I already had this but wanted to confirm some. thank you.

I really have a doubt on this ones about plane texturing, like the tree one and this, doesn't game engines only render one side of the plane? how is this compatible with game engines?, I know that if the plane it's entirely vertical you can make it face the player all the time, but here there are planes facing up, aren't the sides not going to be showing?
@3dextrude

You can set it to render double sided in a game engine, if not you can also duplicate the planes so there are two very close to each other facing different normal direction

you make your cut-outs of plant A/grass A and simply flip the texture of i.e. grass A. In Unreal4 you can actually set it to "double sided foliage" but the best result is doing it manually since you can also tweak the vertex normals (which allow you to blend the grass with the ground more easily).

This is cool and all but definitely not a "How to" video. It's just a time lapse.

I don't think there are real replacements for Zbrush and Subtance, Maya could be replaced with anything, but it's not terribly expensive.

Super fast and no talking. Not a great "how to" surprised so many people liked this.

You can always slow down the video and watch what he does. I liked the video, because it showed his workflow and approach. He sculpted, baked the sculpts onto a plane and then textured it in designer. That's all there is to it (although the designer part may be a little bit more important to follow, however it isn't impossible - just slow down the video, as I said).

Making "how to" videos with assets that you charge good money for is a dirty business.. either use assets that everyone can use or don't do them at all.

These sort of speedy type videos are uninformative and a waste of time, other than the fact that people such as I are looking for proper tutorials. Seems more of an Ego thing than anything else.

For one it's more of an ad for the full length. Two, if you have any experience you'll be able to tell the general steps and fill in the blanks. Zbrush sculpt, bake onto a plane, substance designer for textures, cutting out cards in maya. It's probably the most standard method for foliage outside of speedtree.
