Congestion of vehicles is the most familiar day to day crisis for an overpopulated country like Bangladesh.
Let's hear from Transportation and Safety Expert Dr. Md. Shamsul Hoque what went wrong in the investments done to sort out this problem and what can be done right now to bring back the beat.
Dr. Md. Shamsul Hoque is transportation consultant and safety expert responsible for numerous projects in the booming cities of Bangladesh, Dr. Md. Shamsul Hoque has been extensively involved in wide varieties of civil engineering consultancy and construction projects in Bangladesh including mass transit, road, bridges, flyovers, interchanges, inland container depot (ICD) etc.
A legend in his field, Dr. Hoque has been phenomenal in his efforts to solve the transportation problems of the country. As a Consultant, he has been involved with more than 70 projects so far.
He is the former Director of Accident Research Institute (ARI), former Test-in-Charge, Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation (BRTC) of Department of Civil Engineering, BUET and Director of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
Currently a professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET, Dr. Hoque obtained his PhD in 1994 from the University of Southampton, UK.

Once this was a dream to us now with proper steps and regulations we are prospering in our transport system .with Podma bridge to Metrorail ,things will get much easier for city duellers..Hope that rest of the work be soon finished.. making City run with it's full potential..

I think one of the best practical uses of transport solution & its integration is best practiced in UK as per history. Yes UK had its problems historically & to date nonetheless the lesson learnt throughout history of transport could be a very good example lesson's for Bangladesh, especially for Dhaka. I see that one of the fundamental issues of Dhaka is mass population growth in confined area, what we can learn from UK in this matter. As the anchor rightfully said the flyover system hampered the underground system almost permanently where as UK has a few flyovers within GLA (Grater London Authority) but mostly London has segregated bus, cycle routes without flyover. London spent a lot on DLR (Dockland Light railway) that is running beside the rail routes & it’s fully automated. This automation keeps the cost down, no drivers required (computers drive the DLR) however to keep the monitoring & checks there are inspectors. The automation is one aspect, which also reminds me of why DLR was a requisite at the first place. It was required due the congestion of business within the city. This I feel is something tangible & reality of Dhaka that affects everyday life of people residing within Dhaka. The solution of people congestion cannot be answered by implanting newer & more efficient system of transport alone, if you keep on doing so you'll realise that efficiency also has a limit. Hence GLA decided to move some of her financial HQ to different parts of GLA instead of the city alone which effectively took out the burden of small concentrated pressure & spread it in a measured way including consideration of residential & commercial housing & transport plan. This enabled London City to reduce traffic grows in a measured & systematic way. However in Dhaka I never see or hear about any steps made towards moving business hubs in such a measured & calculated way. Another great achievement of UK I feel doesn't get the credit it deserves is the M25 Motorway. It took 25 years of planning & development why? one to overcome issue of ownership of land, two how practical would it be, three trigger control mechanism in case of emergency & fourthly I feel is the surveying of its future, than feasibility & future maintenance. I somewhat would agree with the anchor with reservation regarding transport system because of Dhaka's population growth. Such high density of population is a disaster waiting to happen. Therefore I feel Dhaka should make plans to distribute trading or manufacturing hubs around Bangladesh, keep the main governmental buildings. Even the government of UK moves governmental sections to non central location for many reasons. I think the government need to become more flexible & start to empower other districts. This would help reduce population bubble, cost of living, congestion & aid evenly develop whole of Bangladesh.

Very good speech, but few important points were missed! FIRST, public transport in most developed countries are NOT privately owned, they are owned by cities in which they operate. SECOND, drivers have to maintain rules of the road, such as maintaining lane. Inarguably overloading is an issue, but the quality of roads is a bigger issue. We have one of the worst quality roads and spend one of the highest...need to bring this to light!

উত্তরার বাইরে ৫৯ একর { One Acre = 3 বিঘা }জায়গা নিয়ে তৈরী হচ্ছে বিশাল মেট্রো রেল ডিপো। বাংলাদেশ সরকার একবারো ভাবলো না জে এই বিশাল ৫৯ একর জায়গাকে মেট্রো রেল এর ডিপো বানিয়ে আর কি-কি সুবিধা পাওয়া যায় ? একই সঙ্গে এই ৫৯ একর জায়গা তে আমরা আর কি তৈরী করতে পারি? ৫৯ একর অথবা ১৭৭ বিঘা জমিতে at least ৫০ টা ৫০ তলা building তৈরী করা যায়। Or we can build airport right above the metro-rail depot. They can make a full size international airport above the rail depot. Bangladesh is running out of space, whether it's residential or commercial purpose. We must think about multiple projects for a single investment. Metro Rail Depot ওপর তৈরী করা উচিত high rise buildings এবং building এর নিচের ফ্লোর টা হবে মেট্রো রেল ডিপো। ওপরের floors গুলো হবে বিভিন্ন সরকারি অফিস। এই metro rail এর depot ওপরে যদি সব সরকারী অফিস গুলো ইস্থাপন করা হয় তবে জনগণ একটা অতিরিক্ত সুবিধা পেতো। এই সুবিধা টা অনেকটা one-stop shopping এর মতন হতো। যে কোনো সরকারি কাজের লেনদেনের জন্য ( Electricity, Gas bill related issue etc) last stop এ এলেই হতো। বিভিন্ন সরকারি অফিস খোঁজার জন্য বিভিন্ন এলাকাতে দৌড়াতে হতো না। এই ৫৯ একর জায়গাতে কত বড়ো বা কত গুলো buildings তৈরী করা যাবে এক বার ভেবে দেখুন।

Sir, did you see in KZbin the "Air Car from Bangladesh" invented by Mohammad Abdullah? That could be a very nice vehicle for transportation in Bangladesh.

great strategy, presentation .......but wrong target audience..... we all know government only interested in money generated projects for their own leaders of the party ,,,,,, they r master on every field whether it is transportation, city corporation integration , monetary policy etc then specialized persons on those fields like you, even most of them uneducated . i wish if some minister or secretary could be their.....

খুবই সুন্দর সেশন, অনেক কিছু শিখলাম। শুধু একটা প্রশ্ন অনেকদিন থেকে রয়ে গেছে, যার উত্তর পাইনি: বাংলাদেশে সাবওয়ে'র কথা বলা হয়েছে। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ বন্যাপ্রবণ দেশ। সাবওয়ে সেক্ষেত্রে কতটা নিরাপদ?

Mayeenul - There are numerous Engineering methods for preventing water precipitation, drain, leakage, and seepage. It is a minor issue actually.
