Every year I get my kids out in the yard after a rainy 65-70 degree day and use flashlights for an hour and get as many as possible. If there’s a lot we will stay out longer but by the time we are done we have enough to last the whole bull head run. This year we are going to make a worm bin as we always have some that die from not being used fast enough and also we end up having to buy them from local bait shops (which I love supporting local business’s but if I can get them for free I’d like to) a simple worm bin would keep them alive longer and give us bait for the whole year while they also breed for the next year as well.

Back when we were kids, Grandma and Grandpa taught us about earning our money. Grandpa made something just like this, and us kids picked "nighties" every night, and sold them by the roadside every day!~ This is so awesome, and brings back such outstanding memories! Thank you!! You gotta be somebody's Hero! Grandpa was mine, and he did this!

Whether he said the numbers right or not, he shows you that he can do it. He made a video that showed you people step by step how to make it and showed you the proof so obviously he knows something. Yet all most of you could do was criticize his efforts. Good Job and Big ups to the guy in the video and thanks for sharing. In New Jersey, When I was 6, 7, or 8, my grandma showed us wetting the ground at night with a garden hose, inserting a 1/4 inch rod 18 inches into the ground, and wrapping a bare wire from an unplugged extension cord around the rod, then plugging it in. If no worms show up in 15 minutes, unplug and rotate the plug and reinsert. Wow, we kids were so excited to go fishing. When I was 20, My Grand Mother and Grand Father developed a worm selling business in Pocatello Idaho. They'd buy dozens from a few local kids, and store them, and resell them to the local and sports fishermen. Good Business, but they'd have to isolate the batches of worms for 3 or 4 days in moist dark soil, because the electrocuted worms would die in 2 or 3 days, but the virgin hand dug worms would last for weeks or months. She'd warn the kids what they were doing to defend their reputation to have good worms for the fishermen. If the kids tried supplying electrocuted worms, she'd cut them off, ( she'd just offer them much less money for the worms, saying she had too many dozens ) and let them go sell to the other worm sellers in town. She'd only buy from certain kids, and pay them well, to keep them as suppliers. A couple of other local worm sellers were selling electrocuted worms on Thursdays or Fridays, but half the purchased worms were dead on Saturday or Sunday when the fishermen wanted to use them, so they'd feel ripped off, that they had bought inferior product, or at least paid way too much, for junk. Obviously the worm business was a real cut throat business in those days. Who would think there was so much drama back in the 50's and 60's.

I can not find any relevant information about electrocuted worms dying after a few days. If anyone can show me to some source that explains this then I would be incline to belive this story other than that its a tale told by a buyer. People who sell worms either buy them from a major supplier or they invest in their own worm farm. Your basic nightcrawler needs to be feed and matured so that it is a much larger size. Other wise you end up with a bunch of super tiny worms that are not big enough to hook up.

@@valentinobosh36 Had you clearly read what I wrote, I did my research. I did not find anything relating to death of worms after a few days. What I did learn is this story is a old wives tale rather than the truth. Every kid has this story about someone who buys worms. I heard this story when I was a kid. Because it was a story told buy someone and passed on, changed, edited over the years. To further embarrassed you I will cite a source from a book, Superfudge by Judy Blume ( 1980 ) Chapter 5 Small Ones Are Sweeter. So a kid growing up in 1980 would have read this and thought that someone is always buying worms and went out and told someone else. I am sure there are more references to stories like this. This is the one I know of so enjoy a few pages of the book. Book: Alex came over one morning and said, "You want to go into business with me?" "What kind of business?" I asked. "Worms," he told me. "Worms?" I asked. "Yea, worms," he said again. "Worms!" Fudge said, jumping down the front steps. "Wormy wormy worms!" Alex looked over at him. "Don't mind him," I said. "He's just my little brother." "Oh," Alex said. "So what do you say?" "Sure," I told him, having no idea what kind of worm business Alex was talking about. "When do I start?" "How about now?" Alex said. "Okay. What do I do?" "First we dig them up. Then we sell them to Mrs. Muldour, down the street. She pays five cents a worm." "What does she do with them?" I asked. "She doesn't say. Some people think she uses them for fishing. Other people think she uses them in her 56 garden. Personally..." He stopped and scratched his head. "Go on... go on...." "I think she eats them," Alex said. I thought for a minute. "Worm pie?" "Yeah... and worm stew... and worm juice...." "And worm soup," I said, getting warmed up. "And worm bread." "Oh yeah, that's the best," Alex said. "Nice soft bread with little worms here and there...." "You can make a really tasty worm and cheese sandwich on it," I said. We were doubled over now, laughing our heads off. "And worm ice cream," Fudge said, jumping on top of us. "Worm ice cream," Alex and I said together. I decided that with Alex Santo in my class, Princeton might not be too bad. That afternoon Alex and I went digging for worms. We rode our bikes over to the lake. It's easy to ride in Princeton, because they have bike paths on every street. Alex had a pail and a couple of shovels, and we got to work. Finding worms was no problem. An hour later we rode back to my house. "Mrs. Muldour likes her worms clean," Alex told me, turning on our hose. 57 If you get to this point and read this, Do not ever rant to me ever again because I will destroy you. I have the time and I am willing to do the research. So enjoy this bashing, I truly enjoyed proving you wrong. Its likely you will ever read this because people have a tendency to not follow thru and read the reply because you are too lazy.

I have made something similar to this and yes it is correct the worms and crawlers die from what i assume is the electric shortly after. I actually stopped doing this way because of that reason! I do not know why they die so fast but my guess is they dont survive the amount of electricity in the ground that would be the only logical reason!? Not a wife's tale!

@@TotalFisherman great inspiration for a homemade "worm getter". Too cheap and lazy to go through all that work so I bought 4 of those extra long handle screwdrivers from Harbor Freight, 4 - 1/4" ubolts, a old extension cord and electrical tape to cover the connections of the wire/ubolt connection area with 3' of wire between probes. I read 85 volts from probe to ground so cover 20+ square foot area at a time. Use the worm bedding material from the local fishing supply store and they keep for several weeks when stored in the fride between fishing trips. Thanks for your video!

@@josephcrook6076 nothing high tech. Just bought 4 - 18" long screwdrivers with 1/4" shafts, 4 - 1/4" U clips. Took a 12" length of extension cord (female end) and stripped the insulation from the hot lead. Take 3 pieces of the leftover extension cord 24" long, strip 1/2"-3/4" insulation. U clip the plug wire and one end of extension to the screwdriver shaft below the handle and repeat the process to the other 3 screwdrivers. Use electrical tape to cover the clamp/wire/screwdriver connection. Do not use a GFIC recepticle for power. If you have a volt meter read from on shaft to the ground. Mine will usually read about 85 volts. As with any AC power you have a chance of getting shocked if you touch the shaft and ground and wear shoes! You can run them in a straight line, square pattern etc but a 4' x 4' square pattern will cover a 16 square foot area of worming. Good luck and play safe 👍

WHERE I live here in NJ,where wooded areas were torn down and the trees put into a chipper machine and mixed with the dirt. The worms love that dark rich soil and after a heavy rain they get washed into the street because the homes sit high and I just hold a screen near the street drain and in 5 minutes I have a 3 gallon bucket of worms. This video is nice and my dad did something like that when i was a kid but be careful. You can also ask your county where they dump leaves because worms breed there and it's nothing more then a giant compost bin. This video and along with knowing where the worms breed will save you money especially if you fish a lot and you can breed them and sell them to others. I know this is an old post but there is a much simpler way to make a single probe. Take the 120V, 15A plug and wire a 12-16", 12 AWG solid house wire to the hot (brass) side. Remove the insulation from the bottom inch or the wire. This is the probe you stick in the ground. Connect it to the extension cord and stick it in the soft, wet ground. If the worms don't come up take another inch of insulation off the end. This makes sure you use the lowest current possible so the worms are not damaged.

Nice DIY. Just a couple of tips: Those crimp taps are only 3-way, you can't leave a tail out of both sides - it won't close right. If you look at it you will see one channel passes all the way through, but the back groove is blanked off at one end. You are supposed to put the feed wire in the front groove (comes out both sides), and insert the tap wire in the back groove until it hits that stop, then crimp the metal with a pliers while holding the tap wire against the stop, then close the cover. You will have wire emerging from 3 places only, not 4. (he did some right and some wrong) I would also grease the nut and lug connections, and the crimp taps, so they don't rust (this will be used in moist conditions, hopefully many years, and not want to open it again). I use silicone grease (ignition dielectric or bulb grease, but Vaseline or any grease would do). I put it in the crimps before I shove the wire in, and grease the threads BEFORE I run the nut down (seals it where it counts). Lasts forever on emergency trailer repairs. Also, You do not have to use such heavy wire. This no doubt uses very little current, I'm guessing less than an amp. (perhaps only milliamps). Someone more curious than I could measure it. You could also add an inline incandescent bulb current limiter (25W to 100W). It would not increase shock safety, just protection in case of hitting a propane line or outdoor lighting wire in the ground, etc...

Come Spring....it's absolutely heaving with worms. Spring/summer still top it up with greens...no grass cuttings....make a different compost pile for them as that takes a lot more to decompose. I started with the compost pile at top of garden well before my kids came along. My son now is in charge of that pile...27 years on!.

I grew up fishing but it wasn't until about 35 years later when my neighbor told me about his worm rod. I thought he was kidding. He brought it out. It was only one rod hooked to a 110VAC extension cord. He plugged it in, stuck it in the ground and the worms literally jumped out of the ground. I couldn't believe my eyes. You can also make something that vibrates in the ground. I understand worms feel the vibration either 60 cycle electrical or mechanical vibration. They think it is a burrowing mole or gopher and come to the top to escape being eaten. Great video... Thanks....

Me too, I use several 2'X2' carpet squares. They're less awkward & heavy to handle than one big piece, & easily stored away for later use. But you have to stand them up on edge against something, or hang them on a clothes line, to fully dry out in the sun before you put them away. Store them wet, & they'll rot to pieces & mold something awful.

The "vampire clips" ...more properly called "insulation-piercing wire taps"....are designed to use the folding cover as an aide to pressing the metal piercer through the insulation. What that means is this: fold the plastic cover over the metal piercer BEFORE you attempt to pierce. That way you don't run the risk of bending the piercer AND the cover is snapped into place at the same time and the piercing is completed, saving one step. Also, you can save time (and money if you don't have a die set) to just use threaded rod instead of threading round stock. Good video!

Pretty awesome. I started a worm farm last year with a couple extra worms at the end of fishing trips. Now I have free worms for life and I don't have to dig or need electricity to gather them. Plus castings for gardening. The build was cool but if you get tired of it throw some of the worms you catch in a bucket and feed them. Easier than any other method I've seen.

I've been doing this for over 50 years,I started with a 2 wire system and yes the worms don't have an extra long life span unless you do this amazing trick I discovered by accident. make a worm box, there's lots of ideas out there but mic in worm bedding with newsprint torn into strips and then add rabbit manure in a 1 to 1 to 1 combination, the worms revive quickly and go on to turn into the biggest night crawler "snakes"you'll ever see, 20 " are common. Also, if you are too scared to try the electricity type just wet your lawn good and use a light with a cover of red plastic, the worms can't see red and will just sit there till you pick them up. I liked the video and will give it a try but remember the rabbit poop. and the red lites, good fishing

My neighbor boy and I did this over 60 some years ago after he read about it in a fishing magazine. All we did was stripe the end of electrical cord and wrapped it around the rods and wrapped with electrical tape. 10 minutes. ? Wet a section of the yard down real good, it was a dry season, so took a while to get moisture down far enough, we found out by digging. Soon off fishing.

When cutting plastic, soft or round metals, reverse the blade so you cut on the back stroke. So the it never 'jumps'. Threaded rod is so cheap... Best way to catch earthworms is with a bucket of water and a dash of dishwashing detergent. Pour on the grass and watch them come out, best done at sunset.

The correct way to cut threads with a tap and die set is to go 1/2 turn forward and then 1/4 turn back and repeat. This helps the chips to clear and makes the threads much nicer. Air-frame school knowledge for the masses. Fyi for all who care. Also bleach products take the stain out of pvc purple primer and glue if you get it before (glue only not primer as primer is not going to harden) it dry's. You can feed your worms with coffee grounds and or dried leaves and keep them in soil. Store them in a refrigerator and they will last for months. If you buy the expensive Nitro (Green antifreeze looking kind) worms. Keep the dried tan looking food stuff they put in the containers. When put into regular worms they will eat it and become Nitro worms.

I remember sitting on a porch swing at my great uncle small backyard in the 1950's as he used his homemade electric worm getter after using a hose to wet the lawn. It was made from two pieces of 1/2" reinforcing rod and the bare ends of an extension cord taped to the rod. The top part that he held had wooden handles over the shorter rod that was welded to the longer piece that went into the ground. I'm pretty sure it wasn't OSHA approved but it sure did bring the worms up to the surface.

Nothing like triggering an undiagnosed heart condition trying to save a few pennies with the sprinkler and a flashlight LOL. Humans continue to increase our life spans by learning from mistakes, not gleefully repeating them. I am going to build 2 or 3 of these with a 6 probe hooked in series but for a different reason. I own just under 2 acres of yard and the moles are just out of control this year. I will tamp my yard down and at the 1st sign of mole activity, I will set up the probe cluster in a semi circle with the circle to push the moles out of my yard. Now what do you think about that?
