African styles like this are looked down upon by majority of Nigerians because it is seen backward and not 'modern'. One of the after effects of colonialism. Africans are leaving behind important knowledge about ourselves because we feel we must conform to a world that cares little about us n our culture.

Well, I care about Nigerian culture and African culture, and I'm black American. It's so good to see these intricate, spiritual and beautiful hairstyles. If only I could find someone to do my hair here like that. Nigerians shouldn't leave their culture for modern things. Maybe they could incorporate them. When I traveled to Africa for the first time, I thought that I was going to see all these traditional clothing and hairstyles. I saw weaves, relaxers, braids, some bleaching and lots of cheap ugly western clothing. African clothes and hairstyles are superior because there is time, care, beautiful colors, fractal patterns, history and culture behind it. I'm not just saying this for ego boost, but it's the truth.

I Agree! I loved this video. So sad the traditional styles aren't being worn. But I guess more women in the village wear it. The Sis in the market would make plenty money here in London. There was a GH Sis who had a hair shop in East London, she knew all the traditional styles and did good business.

Few months ago i went to nigeria and major part of the women had relaxed hair or really bad weaves/sew-ins (not everyone tho)... The thing that really annoyed me is that when i decided to go out with my hair out in an afro some people were telling me "no, you should get your hair done / it's not good if you go out with you hair like that/ it's not nice/it looks dirty" (some of these comments were also from a couple of family members -_-). I was wondering why is a problem for them if i leave my hair how it naturally grows from my scalp... Plus they cant even handle natural hair in the salon they wanted me to go.. I saw how they did my cousins hair, the outcome was great but it looked too tight to me.

Aaawww Odun, this just takes me back to when I was in Primary school. My mum used to ko(thread..lol) our hair every Sunday in preparation for school on Monday. We used to complain then but in retrospect,it was so nice. I have natural hair now and not really a fan of weaves and all that.At the end of the day, it is better to satisfy and free yourself from the need to conform to what others are doing. I carry my hair in braids, wigs sometimes, normal packing and I honestly dont see myself sitting to fix any weave again. That heat and wahala is too much abeg.

But the style she chose really accented and augmented her very lovely face and we got a good look at her gorgeous dark eyes. Ms Oti, did you give any further consideration about the Blacksmiths of Nigeria? It is something personal and of keen interest to me... I am a self-taught knifemaker/blacksmith and is why I inquired about it through correspondences, including email. I hope you are well and in good spirits. Peace be with you always...
