This was very entertaining. It's amazing to think of how ingenious and resourceful our ancestors needed to be in order to survive.

Another good video Harry. I think that you should put a block on your bench when using that stock knife. You would be able to work closer to the end, which gives more leverage and control. Hope to meet up with you at the Ball in May.

TheMrWoodsman Hi a few options...try and get a paroir knife off ebay France....or bolt a section of billhook onto an iron bar handle....or blacksmith something up....I may show how to blacksmith one from a horse rasp soon.

It would be great if you could show how to make one, that way it would be something I have made. Regards

The Laquer, or indeed any exterior treatment will come straight off after a few uses. Soil is full of grit which will scratch it off. They would need repainting very frequently, and this would hide signs of rot taking hold.

Would be mandatory to see how they make it in use over time on different types of soil.

A paroir isn't a type of stock knife anymore than a stock knife is a type of paroir. A stock knife is one of the three pivot blade knives used in british clogmaking. It is not a term for a group of similar pivot knives, even though generalists in green woodworking circles persist in this delusion..... To make pegs with a pivot blade knife it's best to use what specialist peg makers refer to as a peg knife or pegging knife. It is dimensionally different from both a paroir [for french sabots] and a stock knife [used in the carving of british clog soles] and works far better than both. Elwell used to make peg knives. It's not really a fair comparison to use a tool not optimised for the task in hand.
