Can you use fragrant oils in this recipe?

Super, it's a great way to build confidence in making more sophisticated blends. Once you realize how easy it is to make, you'll be hooked. A lovely project to do with your grandma. Have FUN! Let me know how it turns out.

@@Learn2Paint I tried making this soap. It was a total fail for me. Looked so easy and I was interested in taking your course but wanted to try it. The oil sat on top and would not blend. I did add a few drops of essential oil. Didn't set up. Let it sit for about 18 hours. I broke a piece off and it suds very well, was excited about that, but then my hands started to peel and feels dried out. They are burning a little. Do you think by reading this you may know what I have done wrong? Thank you so much. Great video.

@@jodilucki Hi Shawna, first of all, I am sorry that your first batch did not turn out. Could you confirm that you measured accurately as well as monitored the temperature of the oil and water. The success of the soap depends on those two factors, temperature of the oil and water, plus the correct measurements. If your measurements were good, then most likely your temperatures were off when you combined the oil and water together. Did the soap saponify (get to the pudding stage) while you were mixing the oil and water? Did you use a blending stick or hand stir? If your soap got to the saponification stage, then your soap should have hardened within 24 hours. Also when the soap is in the "sloppy stage" do not handle without gloves as the lye will irritate your skin. Once the soap cures and hardens then you can handle the soap without wearing gloves as the chemical process has completed and the lye will no longer be caustic.

@@Learn2Paint Thank you so much for replying. It very well may have been the temp of the lye. I made it then the shortening took too long to melt, the the temps may have wound up being incompatible I suppose. I will try again to see my human error. Any suggestions keeping that small amount of lye hot until ready to use. I have watched another vid where they mixed their lye and put lids on until ready to use making different batches. Obviously, I have a lot to learn.

I hope you try it. Once you make your own soap you will never purchase from the store.

Excellent video! Ive been able to source 99% pure lye. Is that close enough?
@Learn2Paint5 ай бұрын
Thank you for your nice comment. 100% pure is necessary, as you to not want contamination of another chemical. I purchase my lye at a local hardware store in the plumbing department. The brand I purchase is Rooto, which states 100% lye Drain opener on the front label.

I love your video, makes me think I can do this! Can I add fragrances or seeds and dried flower pieces to this recipe?
@Learn2Paint2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Liz for your nice comment. Definitely try the recipe as it is so simple. You can add essential oil for fragrance and I would caution you on adding dried items as they can introduce bacteria into the soap, shortening the shelf life, unless you add a preservative. Which defeats the purpose of natural soap. Good luck on your first soap batch!

Can the test bars be used with a brush to wash dishes?
@Learn2Paint2 жыл бұрын
Not sure, as I have not used them in this type of cleaning. My recommendation is to test it out and let me know the results.
