How to make your own leather airgun seal

@@inrangerimfire20two Hi Dan. Just letting you know I made a new cup and it works great! Dont have to pump as many times to get proper pressure for lighting the stove. I had to file down sides of a cheap 1 inch wood auger spade to get proper diameter and used a piece of scrap hardwood block instead of soft wood. This gave a clean cut without having to sand the interior of the wood. Got some leather from an arts and craft store (Michaels actually) that matched the width of original nicely, soaked the leather square I cut in hot water for 30 minutes and pressed into wood with a vice using a 5/8ths socket which allowed for thickness of the leather. I pressed the smooth finished side of vegetable tanned leather into the hole so there was no need to sand the cup afterwards. I also trimmed the leather while the socket was still stuck in the wood with an exacto knife then removed the socket and dried out the leather (while jn the wood) with a hair dryer. I didnt have a punch to make needed hole in the cup for pump shaft so I used a 3/8ths drill which also removed the new cup without splitting the wood. I should be able to make a few more spare cups with same mold. Sorry for long winded explanation but thought you and others might be interested in this method. After seeing other over engineered methods in you tube, your method was most practical and useful approach. Thanks again as now i may dig out my old Slavia 620 and see if it needs a cup! I am assuming that springers have a cup to push air into the barrel when the trigger releases the compressed spring.

I can't verify if its right but I've been told that they originally boiled the leather in oil before pressing it into the seal mould to make them in the factory. Great idea for reproduction method though.

No, that would only be a risk where the oil would be combustible- like in a spring piston air rifle where you would experience a “dieseling effect”. In a pneumatic air rifle the air is compressed and then released from a chamber.
