Why are the patches brown and not grey? You would think it would just make the black lighter.

Great question! So there are a couple of things that cause the black to turn brown. 1. Black dyes are a combo of a bunch of dark pigments. So when black is bleached, the colors in the dye deteriorate and the thing changes color. Hair bleaching works the same way! 2. The length of time the bleach is left on will determine what color you see. It can cycle through red, orange and yellow before it eventually turns white. 3. Is the fabric 100% cotton? My shirt was a blend of cotton, rayon and polyester. Polyester and nylon can be harder to bleach or dye than cotton. So I did not get as much color lift here. It's trying to lift to an orange but instead looks brown. To get gray, you'll need to bleach to a yellow or white level, rinse and then apply a gray dye. TLDR: black dye is made with a bunch of different colored pigments. When bleached, pigments deteriorate and become more visible.

Brown and blue are often mixed to make black, at least with paint supplies. Have you ever noticed that some blacks seem warmer or cooler? Warmer blacks have more brown and cooler blacks have more blue.

Yes, that can definitely happen too! I think that's why sometimes an old, faded black shirt will take on a purple or blue-ish tint.

What does the shampoo do? Or in other video shaving foam do?
@AdennFox3 жыл бұрын
It gives you a surface to swirl the bleach or dye on top of so you can make the marble swirls. Without the shampoo or shaving foam you would have hard streaks or blobs of dye/bleach spots. (Shaving foam does not work with bleach though. The bleach curdled the shaving foam like old milk. Ew. Thats why I used shampoo for the bleach shirt instead).

So you're not going to neutralise the bleach? You're a fan of getting holes in your clothing then?
@AdennFox2 жыл бұрын
You definitely can use a neutralizer to be extra careful. But In my experience rinsing thoroughly and then washing the item by itself (twice) has been enough. I have not had any problems with holes forming from the bleach even a year+ later.
