This was a cheap Lionel F3 shell from EBAY. I'll repair the nose and then show how to use masking tape and "Rattle-Can" spray paint to make it look a whole lot better.

It's good to finally see how you get those smooth curves with the red/yellow/black stripes on these. Nice video!

Nice job, it’s nice to see these vintage locomotives restored to their former glory. Watching you mask off all the striping gives some idea just how labor intensive the real locomotive build must have been. There is on more “bonnet” for the Santa Fe the “yellow bonnet”, as with the original “war bonnet” red and silver the yellow variant has yellow where the red is. I haven’t seen models sporting this scheme, but I have seen photos of ATSF A units sporting it. Yhis might be an interesting variant for your F unit collection.

I tried to do a blue one but messed it up completely. I ended up stripping the whole shell and making it for Amtrak.

Bob, you're "scary" good! I'd be ashamed to show you my repaints. I just painted an ABA 2343 set to SP bloody nose. Waiting for decals but it needed touch ups. Impressive video Bob.

Dang! Thanks for the compliment but don’t put yourself down at the same time. We’re both just doing this stuff because we like trains. 😀 I hope you’re having a great week and I’d love to see your finished work.

Not sure if I mentioned it before, but I use clear stickers and a laser printer to reproduce numbers for the blank number board. Couldn't quite tell if the original is printed, or embossed.
@bobsworkshop518110 ай бұрын
The number board I have has molded numbers with paint. But I only had one.

You do a pretty good job masking and I love the music you choose doing this process quite relaxing !! You are missing out on the warbonnet scheme you've done the originals quite nicely but a blue bonnet and Yellow bonnet would round out the collection!! I think the black for silver scheme is a mistake the silver color in the dark in certain lighting looks like shiny black and I think the Lionel catalog artist made this mistakenly!! Keep up the good work BOB !! NOW to find chassis to put under all your shells you have quite a big Santa Fe fleet now a blue bonnet and yellow bonnet will just round it out I especially like the yellow bonnet with the black stripe down its nose!!

Thanks. I’ll keep looking for one to do in Blue. Have a great week. Bob 😀

I found it interesting that you use Ford red for this. I found that Caterpillar yellow is stinkin’ close to UP yellow.
@bobsworkshop51817 ай бұрын
I bet Lionel used a lot of different reds over the years. 🤔
@Wildfire8687210 ай бұрын
There's also the "Yellowbonnet" scheme where the red was replaced with yellow.

True but I’m not the biggest fan of yellow trains. 🤔

Bob, what type of putty do you use to fill cracks and dents on Postwar shells?
@bobsworkshop51817 ай бұрын
It is a grey modelers putty from Tamiya that I got at a local hobby shop.

What's ment by "Dueling scar" & what does Germany & Prussia got to do with it?
@bobsworkshop518110 ай бұрын
Google “German dueling scar”. A lot of soldiers from that part of Europe sparred with each other in sword play competitions. A big scar across your face was like a badge or Medal of Honor in their military. Especially among “old school” German and Prussian officers.
