34:48 - I think I understand why this is the case. I think it's something to do with the auditory's system being able to differentiate between transients vs tones extremely easily - they're perpendicular to one another on an FFT view (vertical vs horizontal). A transient is, by definition, dynamic. It's rises and falls quickly in amplitude. A tone, by definition, it very "compressed" or lacks dynamics. It's continuous, so has a high RMS vs peak level. So it makes perfect sense that EQ changes are more audible on highly compressed audio vs less compressed audio. Transient information is more affected by compressors and other equipment that affects changes in amplitude, but constant loudness information (highly compressed audio) is more affected by EQ. If you think about it, they're perpendicular to one another on an FFT view.

I really enjoy the explanations of what's happening and the philosophy behind the moves he's making. Also that you can tell he's very into what he's doing. He makes it look like he's playing an instrument throughout the process. I'm obviously not all the way through the video yet, but this is a very enjoyable watch so far.

It only goes to show production can't save a song. It's weird to combine 2 different mixes. They're looking at the wrong thing, the problem with that bridge lies obviously in the limits of the performance/stylistic/artistic choices. Basically, they didn't know how to make the song hold the listener attention. I guess that's why some say you can't polish a turd.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Combining mixes is very common! The Beatles did it very often, mixes, takes, you name it! To this day I can think many hit songs that are combined mixes.

@@Producelikeapro I don't doubt it, but rather than having that harsh volume swell at the end of the bridge I would have cut 1/8 or 1/4 of its last measure and anticipate the following chorus; this way it would have be the only unpredictable variation happening in this song. Let's be honest, this song says all it has to say within the second chorus, we're nowhere near the experimental Beatles repertoire, we're actually closer to early Beatles, and even closer to 50s doo wop with those 4 chords progression.

The first mix after just minutes of Reuben doing his thing is it for me. What was done to the bass track itself in the second mix is just terrible mud to my ears and the fix sounds and feels less effective.

When I look at the two mixes, I notice that almost all of the peaks have been cut off in the sum and that now the mastering processors can't process the transients properly because the peaks are missing in the first ones and too little headroom was left.
