I'd say, of the melee skills, Long Blade is a bit average. There are a lot of good swords in the game but the mechanics of how to use them aren't the best. Personally I'd say the best to worst are: Spears- So long as you're willing to move around you can use these to hit from outside the reach of most enemies in the game and the Daedric/Bound Spear are solid choices. Short Blades- The big selling point is that Short Blades have a high minimum damage so you can spam quick attacks. You won't do as much damage per hit as when you hold for that split second to fully charge the attack but you can do a lot more attacks so your overall damage is going to be higher. Also, once you get decent Strength and Agility, you can keep an opponent stagger locked so they can't fight back. Axes- I have Axes higher than Long Blades but mainly for the Bound Battle Axe. It does 1-80 damage so, with a windup, it will do the highest base damage in the game. You can't enchant it but, with 80 points of damage, you don't really need to. Long Blades- You won't really regret using Long Blades and the Daedric Crescents (arguably the best melee weapons in the game use that skill) but they're just not the best choice. Blunt- The main selling point is that Blunt weapons have some of the highest item hit points in the game so it will take a lot longer for them to wear out and break so you won't have to go the repair shops as often. The good Blunt weapons are brutally heavy though and, with the inventory capacity you can save using lighter weapons, you can carry plenty of Repair Hammers or Drongs and keep your weapons in full repair. Unarmed- This is definitely in the game for role-playing. If you have a specific character in mind it can work but I wouldn't recommend it for a first play though or even a fourth or fifth play through.

Not sure what you mean about "the mechanics of how to use them aren't the best" the mechanics for all weapons are the same You also seem to contradict yourself a bit since you even admit that the best weapons in the game are pretty much all long blades Strongest possible weapon ends up being the best weapon skill, because there aren't any weaknesses/bonuses to particular weapon types. It's just damage, item health, enchantment value, weight, and swing speed/reach. Highest DPS is a daedric Dai Katana with some sort of damage enchantment on it, so long blade is best That being said I don't think it matters enough to be a deal breaker for any of the other weapon types. Any max level (daedric etc.) weapon of any type is going to do plenty of damage. It's unlikely you will be running around with a daedric battleaxe thinking "gee I really wish this was a sword or a hammer instead" you are going to be far too busy doing massive damage to every single enemy in your path. So honestly it's all preference at the end of the day.

@@PTMG I definitely agree that you can use any weapon type and finish the game but there are differences between the mechanics of the types. Spears get the extra reach that let you hit while the npc can't hit back. It does call for a mobile play style and a certain amount of judgment though to keep the mobs in the sweet spot where you can hit but they can't quite close the distance. Short Blades have the fastest attack rate and highest average minimum damage (so favoring spam attacks especially with enchanted weapons). Spamming attacks with an enchanted Daedric Wakizashi would probably give the best dps in the game (as opposed to best one hit damage). But, in all honesty, when we're talking Daedric Weapons you aren't going to need a lot of attacks for most mobs in the game so you may not always benefit from the higher attack speed. Where the Short Blades really shine is when you start getting higher levels of Agility and Strength and can keep most mobs stagger locked. Axes and Blunt weapons have large hit point pools so they don't wear out as fast. They also have the highest base damage maximums but the worst minimums so you really have to do the wind up to get the best out of them. As I mentioned though, there aren't a lot of mobs in the game that need more than one hit from a Bound Battle Axe. They can be annoying to level up though as you don't get the chance for as many attacks as with Short Blades. So Long Blades are very base line with nothing to recommend them over the other weapons other than "Heroes use swords." As for the best weapons in the game being the Daedric Crescents those are essentially cheat code Easter eggs that maybe one player in a hundred will stumble on without a guide so I wouldn't recommend a new player just looking for advice on general game mechanics specialize in Long Blade based on the off chance of finding them in a normal play through. (Same for Eltonbrand except even more so;).
