MIXING ORCHESTRAL MOCKUPS
More info: cinematiccompo...
As discussed earlier for the mixing process, let’s open a new project.
I’ll load all the audio stems that I exported before, and I’ll do the mix in this project, with all the additional EQ, compression, reverb, and automation.
Doing this will help me separate the composing and arranging process from the sound mixing process.

Being an L1 speaker I found closed captions helped me to understand what you were saying.

Great lesson! Usually I'm not a big fan of epic orchestral trailer music, but this is very good information.

Very interesting and usefull video. A quick question: how do you deal with the contrabass section regarding its position in the stereo field? As contrabass are usaly respecting their "classic" position in the orchestral libraries, on the right, often I've the tendency to "re-center" them, either with a slight stereo paning to the left or with a mid-side EQing (centering the low range) on their track when I'm not trying to mimic a real/actual symphonic orchestra.

Hi. I think you already replied your own question. If you're looking for a more classical orchestral position sound, you keep those low frequencies on the right. If you want a different sound, you can put them in the middle. The tendency you have is probably because of the eletric bass and drum bass that nowadays are almost aways in the middle.

Also, from my experience, it's not a good idea to change the pan of orchestral libraries directly on the mix table because you would move also the "entire room" that the specific instrument is, causing a weird reverb sound.

Really dumb cubase question but how did you get your tracks to have that color but none on the waveform?

Thanks a lot ! I just may have a question, is it a good idea if we keep each tracks instruments, bounce them and add their audios to a stem for their groups ? Does it affect the sound or is it good for mixing again if we did an error in the balance or even arrangements mistakes ? We can add eq and reverb through the main stem ( instruments families ) and keep the information of the instruments in it.

I think it's better to have an unique and global reverb for behind-instruments, and another wet reverb with long decay for the instruments that you want to get in front

To add something about your question I would suggest you to always bounce in audio midis (it helps with cpu and also because the output signal will be always the same). Percussions always wide on side, never in face in mono.
