Hi James ! this is a great tutorial ! Mixing ration according to manufacturer's guidelines is very important ! Using a scale makes us professional hairdressers ! Many times I am weighting bleach powder (or cream), or tint and peroxide in front on clients, because they want to see what I am doing on their head ! Don't laugh, but I have build a strong confidence between my clients and me on that way ! Some time later, you could just do a small tutorial saying what peroxide we should use according to the desired result ! Moreover, the knowledge of Ph, is also important, not only on bleaching, but on every chemical process ! Almost 50% of hairdressing is "open cuticles, close cuticles", which is high Ph, low Ph, balanced Ph ! Once again, you did great work !

Wonderful Chris - yes the theatre of mixing your colours in front of the client is a great thing to do I absolutely agree with it in fact I do that to these days it really does add a little bit of something to the process and the client gets to appreciate that it’s not us going out the back and throwing a colour into a bowl there really is more to it than that. Glad you appreciated the pH side of things it is so so important to understand that specific aspect of the job way more important than people realise thank you for your comment as always it is a wonderful comment

I wish you were here Christy’s. Many, many a time I have been at the sink watching out of the corner of my eye and watching a “stylist” free pour and eyeball their color and not only that, at one salon who promotes Aveda and ONLY Aveda, was using Aveda color with a peroxide that is on Avedas list of “Do NOT mix with the following brands….” List. When I asked the stylist I was seeing “Do you only use Aveda? And the response was “Absolutely! It is the ONLY brand we use and we had to work very very hard to get certified as and Aveda Salon so we don’t use anything else and every stylist here is Aveda Trained.” I then asked what would happen if you mixed Aveda color with a non Aveda Peroxide would that be acceptable or harm the hair?” And the blood rushed from her face. She was almost opaque to the point that I could see her veins. She very quickly said she had to use the washroom and went to the back room where the owner was and all I heard was “ yada yada yada she knows, she saw someone mixing it…yada yada yada…….” And then returned back to my chair and I said “I didn’t hear you watch your hands?” (I’m a nurse) and she said “oh I just used the sani-gel” and I then gave her a quick “nothing is better than washing your hands with soap and water especially when you’re touching other humans.” And she laughed it off and had a look of relief as if “whew. Escaped that one!” And I let her comb out my hair and we talked about a cut and went through colors etc etc until She felt comfortable that she had made me happy and understood what I want. She then said “OK. I’ll be right back and go mix your color!” With a big smile on her face. I said, “Oh fabulous, well I’m not going anywhere and it is my first time here so why don’t you mix it here?” And again, bold rushed to feet. She came up with how difficult it is to haul everything back to the station etc etc…..” so I got up out of the chair and said “I’ll follow! I love chemistry and it is part of my degree so this will be fun! Gotta keep learning every day!” And I just smiled and followed her as her pace went from “The Flash” to “Snuffelupagus” and we got to the back and she started to pull down the color and squeezed in a 1/2 a tube or whatever color and then grabbed the same bottle of peroxide I had seen before while I was at the sink getting my hair washed and VERY QUICKLY free poured the peroxide into the color and started mixing after tucking the peroxide (NO IDEA what strength it was…10. 20, 30,…..40????!!!!??) under the cupboard. Not a SCALE IN SIGHT. ANYWHERE. So I asked “How do you know how much of each to put in the bowl?” And this was the final straw……….”Well, when you have been doing it this as long as I have you get really good at knowing how much of each you need.” And I then asked the million dollar question…. “And how long have you been doing this to be THAT good and able to eyeball your measurements? I’ve been a Nurse Practitioner for 25 years and I couldn’t eyeball morphine let alone saline solution.” And she said…..wait for it…….”Oh, about 4 1/2 years I think.”……. And good bye. Out I went and never ever ever went back. Google review up and about 15 phone calls from the owner, none of which I took as there is nothing to be said. An apology would only be because they were caught and not because they were sorry. I may not be a spring chicken but I do know a bit about hair color as my bff who moved the month before was my stylist since after High School and she was always telling me horror stories of color correction and formulas and things that clients were told to do by other stylists etc. She said that about 70% of her clientele was color correction. I can now see why. When I told her what happened she found me someone to go to that she trusted to do her hair and I have stuck with them. My very FIRST appointment with them, I walked in and the FIRST thing I saw on the colouring counter which was next to the wash station were SCALES!!! THREE OF THEM, all clean, bright and shiny to the point I thought they were new!!! She washed my hair and the entire time we were chatting she was working and she even wheeled her little cart over and MIXED MY COLOR ON A SCALE RIGHT BESIDE ME and I thought she would then wheel it back but every stylist had a wheelie cart and that is where there color sits which they use to mix the color on. BRILLIANT!!! I was HOME…….I still go there unless my BFF is in town in which case, she cuts and colors my hair and my NEW stylist comes over and colors and cuts her hair…..LOL!!! Ahhhhhh….the circle of life! My Daddy always said that the only thing you leave behind of any value is your reputation so it better be a good one. 💖 Clearly, you are both slaying it in that department!!!!! Kudos and thank you for being ethical and honest in an industry that I have come to know is not always that way.

I brought a scale into a salon that didn't have one and no one ever used one. Trying to explain why you should do things by weight was looked at with suspicion and utter confusion on how to use a scale. I even had to explain to the owner how you can get the precision over how much to mix for individuals clients so the color isn't wasted as much. I saw so many hairdressers open new tubes of color because the tube was rolled down in between the lines on the side and they couldn't figure out how much to measure. Man, it was like pulling teeth. Sometimes rolling the tube down to a line makes way more color than you need and there are air bubbles that cause the measurement to be off. When it comes to free pouring for bleach, sometimes hairdressers act like by the sheer might of their artistic talent, they can make a product do whatever they want it to do no matter how it's mixed. XD

Scales- I use the types used by jewellers. They're the best! Bleach powders- Certain brands are very sensitive, so its important to mix exact amounts. I use Schwarzkopf Blondme and it must be measured out precisely. Remember- its Alchemy! We need to measure. I'm always amazed by the lack of knowledge many have about the science of the products they work with. The lack of adding peroxide to bleach will result in High alkalinity. Even powder with water- can lift pigment in the hair!😱 1 to 1:5 gives a type of "cake frosting / icing texture. So nice for freehand work/ lift. When foiling or scalp bleaching- to acheive even lift, its important to have good saturation and be generous with applying . I prefer to mix 1:2, and to prevent swelling-never Whisk bleach (it adds air) and mix small amounts but often, for optimum potency and to avoid wastage.. .

Every single hairstylist needs to see this! I am guilty of free pouring when I know the bleach but after you explained it the way you did I will not anymore. If anyone thinks it doesn’t matter there was a girl in the salon I used to work at and we used the same bleach and she would always use 30 and sometimes 40 volume on EVERYONE and I don’t use higher than 20 and my clients would lift amazing and pretty fast and her clients would take forever to lift. I even remember letting her do my money piece touch up and I lift super fast and it took forever for me to lift and that has never happened before but she would mix her bleach so that it was incredibly thin. Now I know why it wasn’t working for her! She would always be so shocked that my clients would lift so blonde with 20 volume and I did say to her one time that her bleach being so runny might be why she was having issues but she would just blame the bleach. She didn’t like taking advice of any kind🤷🏼♀️ thank you for the great videos! I always like knowing the why of things.

A good topic to discuss is the difference between highlift tints & bleach. I see all the time, hairdressers and joe public- believing its "gentler , kinder , safer, better than bleach. When its loaded with ammonia and requires 30 / 40 vol peroxides. And the belief that it can get the same lifting results on dark hair as bleach!😯🤐😫 I even see hairdressers giving "formulas for toners on bleached hair - theyve " advised " using 12- series highlifts😱 its important to understand when and on what hair- one could opt for highlift over bleach and try to quash the belief thar bleach is really bad compared to highlift tints

Neither do I!!! My cosmetology education was Pivot Point. We were taught that water STOPS lightener from continuing to process. For example, if part of the highlights seem to be processing much faster than the rest of them, you can just spray water on the lightened hair, wipe it with a towel, and the lightener stops processing. Some lightener is wicked fast when it comes to processing, so if your foiling longer hair, you either have to be wicked fast at application, processing and washing it out OR you need to have someone else working with you. Aveda lightener is wicked lightening quick from the time it is applied and when it's done processing! It's insane!!! Thanks for sharing James! ~ APRIL LIPKE

Very interesting :). Makes sense about the scalp application being different given the pH. Makes you wonder if some of the worst scalp damage incidents come from inconsistent mixing. Related to another topic you brought up, I'm curious if the low and slow method ends up resulting in equal or less damage than 'fast and furious' if you eventually lift to the same shade. It's pretty unapparent to me what the answer would be.
@TheLifeOfHair3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Yes that is a very very good point one that is incredibly difficult to prove without laboratory grade equipment however once this Covid business is all over I have been in talks with the University of Brighton and hopefully they’re going to help me out prove or disprove with a low and slow is better or worse for the hair than Fast and Furious/manufacturers guidelines LOL I don’t know how long that’s going to take to make that video but I’m very excited to see the outcome

Wella and Schwarzkopf powder lighteners i use , they recommend only 1.5 / or 2 ratio. which is 1:1.5 or 1:2. I always use 1:2 ratio in foil or out the foil as the thickness is perfect. sometimes when i feel like the foils will drag down i do 1:1.5 ratio. yes scales are the secret. For colour and bleach. you know what i never tried the 1:4 as i usually use bleach and water to remove any unwanted tone, or sometimes vitamin C, but i will give a go to that. @TrishSE3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I always use a scale for everything. Usually, I use 1:1.5. One of the things that did make me question back and forth was "do I measure powder on the scale or do I use a level scoop?" Many manufacturers tell you to mix by the level scoop, not by weight. For example, Matrix Lightmaster says mix 1:1 = 1 level scoop + 0.5 oz developer. Okay but if I convert that weight in grams on the scale, a level scoop of powder is not 15g (converting 0.5oz to grams). I usually have to add more powder to bring it up to the precise weight, so obviously, that makes a difference in the consistency when mixing in the developer. Basically, you can get two very different formulas measuring power on a scale versus by the scoop. Am I making sense at all describing the confusion or am I overcomplicating? LOL Well, anyway, now I know just use the dang scale for both the powder and developer XD. Thanks, James!
@TheLifeOfHair3 жыл бұрын
Yes I see where you were going with that Trish that is slightly confusing on the basis that you end up using both but as you said at the end of your message just use the scales for both peroxide and powder it will simplify your life

It probably won't make you feel too much better since I'm not actually licensed. I have been trained enough to know what I don't know when trying new things. Your channel finally gives me the answer as to why I was told to always use my scale. Years ago I was hired by my friend who ran her own home apt business to do her books, make apts, help hand out refreshments if it was a party. I eventually convinced her to teach me some things since she was sick of seeing me bleach my hair 5 times after going black then once blonde I would go to burgundy. By the time I left her employee she would let me do the color when there was multiple clients while she did the cuts. I didn't go to get my license because there's no way I could handle all the issues with clients. If someone lied about having lunch before ordering food from the guy at McDonald's their damn hair won't turn weird ass colors or potentially fall out. I will never understand why people lie to their hairdressers face. Anyway I'm actually so glad I know what I do since I have three daughters and being able to color(and cut i just hate it) means my kids have the trendiest hair in the city. My 8 year old has a cotton candy prismatic underneath peek a boo and my 6 yr old has a rainbow Prismatic money piece.... although I might be in trouble I'm attempting a rainbow pinwheel with dual color melted sections all by myself ......

I thought you were going to discuss it in the middle of the video but then you returned to discussing the ratios. Perhaps you are thinking of doing another video about the science on that specific subject ? I know you mentioned something in a video about ''low and slow'' and ''fast and furious''... I will try to research in your video bank in order to link this new knowledge with that one in my head. Thanks again for the great work !

Hi thank you very much yes I think I will make another video on that particular subject this video was already over 20 minutes long I don’t want them to become too lengthy I’d rather make another video and talk about that matter at another time you’re absolutely right halfway through this video I did go down a bit of a rabbit hole talking about different developers et cetera et cetera but I stopped myself in the edit and removed that section as I felt I didn’t cover enough detail because I was really trying to shoehorn into the middle of the video so at some point in the future I will make a video on that keep your eyes peeled thank you for your comment is always much appreciated James

@@TheLifeOfHair Thanks for your answer. I am looking forward to understand why, given that the pH of hydrogen peroxyde is lower than that of water (thus more acid), and that the percentage of peroxyde is how much peroxyde there is mixed in distilled water, given that you said that the more basic the solution, the more the hair cuticles get opened, it would mean that a 40% peroxyde would be more acid than a 10% (as 10% has more water in it, and water is less acid). Why is a 40% peroxyde stronger and faster to lighten hair than 10% if it is more acid ? I'm a little confused... I'm sure the video you'll be making on the subject will help me understand that better... Thanks !

Realy cool video🙏Have a quastion!!!what if I only have a 30 vol of peroxide in a bottle and I want to make it a 20 vol by adding water in it etc(equal parts water and equal parts 30vol is going to make a 20 vol peroxide final mixture of peroxide.is the alcalinity of the water gonna make the peroxide more alcaline than a regular 20 vol straight out of the bottle than creating it with water and 30vol equal parts? ❤️🙏

Thank you very much! Great question, so if you’re going to die loot 30 V to 20 V yes you should do it in the water mineral water or distilled water is the only thing that you should dilute your peroxides with you shouldn’t use tapwater the main reason is the pH of tapwater is higher depending on the location geographically and mineral water/filtered water tends to be on the lower pH scale if you’re going To die loot peroxide down by using water which is the preferred way May I add! There is quite a precise calculation to reduce down the volume there are some fantastic videos on this subject here on KZbin I haven’t personally made one yet but I will do at some point in the future All the best James

I can never get enough lift on my level 5 regrowth - do you have any suggestions for on scalp product or are they all much of a muchness if you mix and apply correctly. I beleive I mixed too much 20 vol this time (40 minutes) but the 1:2 mix looked too thick to apply - hindsight hey

My question after this vid is.....say I was using a 30 developer with bleach on the sides and back of hair. Since I start on bottom, by time I got to the crown of the head all of that bleach has been on hair for a bit. Should I use a lesser number of developer when I'm doing the crown? To account for the time and color outcome on rest of hair that has been bathing in bleach for the crown hairs so that when I wash out they will be the same tone? I'm thinking if I used the same 30 dev for the top hairs and left on a bit more, would there be an obvious diff between the brightness of the bleach between top and rest of hair? Thank you, hope that makes sense.

@TheLifeOfHair3 жыл бұрын
Yes 👍🏻
@sufiaahmedkhan47673 жыл бұрын
you said to mix shampoo In my hair class they said to use conditioner as we all know that the conditioner closes the cuticles right
@TheLifeOfHair3 жыл бұрын
So one of my preferred beach bath recipes is bleach powder peroxide and shampoo in equal measure so for instance 30 g 30 g 30 g. I would then condition after doing that service prior to putting on any toners to even out the property and close the cuticles remember hair colour is designed to go on to dry hair wet hair cuticles are closed we do not need to have the cuticles open to apply the colour otherwise the manufacturer would recommend that we applied it to wet hair and generally speaking most manufacturers recommend that you dry the hair before you put another colour on Hope that makes sense all the best James

Can you use a diferente brand of peroxide to mixed redken or it was redken
@TheLifeOfHair3 жыл бұрын
In this particular video I was using Redken peroxide it is always recommended to use the manufacturers for outside as the acidity can be different from brand to brands but you will get away with using other brands of peroxide with any bleach powder
