Great video, John! So glad to see another channel for us older gents. Kudos to both you and the Style O.G. for bringing great material to us. Being beyond the half century mark myself, your videos show we can kill it in the style game. That last ensemble didn’t work for me but style is relative to each man. Otherwise, great advice all around.

Great video and a useful tool. I do a lot of model soldier painting and so the colour wheel is second nature. I just wanted to add that black and white are not true colours and therefore can be combined with almost any other colour . Brown which is what we call a composite colour can also be similarly treated. Best tip is to try different combinations and then ask your partner as to what they think before going out.

This was really helpful for me. I almost never wear a suit and tie, so when I do, I’m always a little uncomfortable. We went to a charity gala last month and I wore my navy suit with a navy gingham shirt and a light blue striped tie. I thought it looked pretty good. Since I was fooling with patterns I kept the colors monochromatic. Thanks for the tips.

Hi, John. The Dark Knot makes some awesome ties. I own the regimental tie on the left at 2:00. I’ve had that burgundy abstract tie (4:46) on my sights for a while. Orlando Dela Cruz Glad you liked it! As he had mentioned, pattern combinations can be simpler as it requires difference in size and scale e.g a wider striped tie against a narrower striped shirt!

Hey Orlando that’s the spirit breaking out of our comfort zones can be a great boost, and yeah you can believe that we ALL try lots of things at home that never make it to the streets so don’t be concerned give it a go....☺️👍🏻

Interesting with the color wheel, John, and mixing large and small patterns works. But mixing different types of patterns, no. That is really hard to get right. But your color combos were great.
@TheDarkKnot5 жыл бұрын
Alfa Centauri Mixing different types of patterns can work if the scale / proportion is right e.g large polka dot tie pattern against a micro checkered shirt. The most important is pattern scale when matching patterns.
@alfacentauri36865 жыл бұрын
@@TheDarkKnot After reviewing the video it all boiled down to the striped shirt. If it were micro striped as the shirts at 2:00 it would look good. But the current width and coloring made it a strong statement piece which in my opinion didn't combine well with the patterned ties or the window suit jacket.

He is giving good advice re colour and shape. Follow this advice and you never fail. You can create a very conservative, dignified look, suitable for the senior gents or the man who does a serious, responsible job eg senior managers in the finance industry, lawyers etc. Or you can create an unconventional, daring look that seems to break all the rules eg strange colour combos or mixing stripes, checks and dots etc. A look suitable for men in more creative industries or with such a personality or younger men eg artists, musicians etc. However, even though they appear to break rules with these unusual combinations, they still look good for their personal style. Because, even for rule breakers, there are rules on how you break them. And, if you don't know what the rules are to begin with, how do you know how to break which ones? It just ends up as random chaos. Seldom a good look. Though some do wear it.... Including many females. It leaves the observer confused about what such people are really trying to express about who or what they are. Confused, chaotic, out of control, have no idea who or what they are, stand for, represent or where their life is going etc? The style you adopt speaks volumes about you to others, before you even open your mouth to speak. Research has shown that it takes just 4 seconds for a stranger to meet someone and form a lasting first impression. In that initial first 4 seconds of meeting you, you have not even got to speak to introduce yourself and reveal your voice, to influence their impression of you by sound. Nor will you have gotten to the handshake or other tactile stage, for them to assess you by your handshake or touch, as people, especially males, often will. The first sensation they get of you is the visual ie how you look. You can look very sensational or you can appear some other way. So, much as we like to believe and say looks aren't important, substance is, the reality is people's first and permanent impressions are invariably based on the visual, unless, of course, they are physically blind. I know this is very unfair, but, fact is, good looking people, either gender, always get the first pickings of all the goodies life has on offer, from the most desirable opposite gender mate, to best same gender friends, good jobs, social invites to events, parties etc. They get chosen for team sports, to be paraded around at fashion or artistic type events, they do well in business eg sales or as bosses/favoured employees or even as politicians because people are more likely to vote for a good looking leader than an ugly one, sadly, even though the ugly one may well have the better policies and delivers on these. It is so unfair because we are not all born equally beautiful, naturally. But, there is no need to go under the scalpel for the plastic fantastic type surgery, just to look better. Dressing right for your personality, complexion, height, age, body type, the occasion, the environment, weather, what you will be doing in your clothes eg dressed in your birthday suit, can compensate for any short comings Mother Nature dealt you, when she was dealing out who gets to be beautiful, sexy etc and who doesn't. As any ugly woman who struggles to look good, to get a man knows, Mother Nature was no nice lady herself. She was an absolute bitch, being so unfair. But you can overcome that injustice. Just follow this Lancs advice because he has it all figured out and can help you in your quest to look good and access some of the goodies available to good looking men. Even if youare poor and own no fancy expensive car or do a job that pays millions. Women will fall madly, passionately in love even with a very poor man, if he is put together well. They can't help it. It is female instinctive. They may not agree to marry you, but, hey, you can still have a good time with them before they leave you. And, looking good and confident as a man, you can easily go out and get a replacement female almost immediately, which will probably prompt the ones who dropped you to come running back, begging forgiveness and another chance with you. So never underestimate the power of looks or let other guys or even your mum tell you it doesn't matter. It does. Because, your mum will love you unconditionally, since she produced you. And male mates, unless they are gay etc, are not going to be primarily interested in how sexy etc you look, before they choose you as a friend. They are looking for other qualities in you, but your appearance can be either off-putting or appealing to them as friends.

Think loudness or saturation is important to. The strangesness of the color or pattern, and the contrast. Then I think you are right about size and scale, but I am not so trilled about all the examples, at the end: Nr - Rating 1 - 2 2 - 4 3 - 3 4 - 3 5 - 4 6 - 5 7 - 4 ------ 8 - 3 9 - 3 10 - 1 11 - 2 12 - 1 13 - 1 I did enjoy the video, especially that you took your time to show exemples, so keep them coming. You should number your examples it makes it much funier to coment. Why I like the number six (pink shirt dark red tie) is that the shirt, pocketsquere and tie is complementing eachother, the light color in the shirt reduce the contrast with your grey suit and it match your contrast and complection the best. The pocketsqure have darkblue insted of the lightblue in the tie and it is kind of muted and not shiny so the different fabrics are kind of mature and interesting. The brown probably allso complement brown shoes to 😃

The question is: why? I go with either a patterned or bold shirt or tie, but never with both. Hiwever, there are white shirt with very thin blue striped, they can go with a patterned tie.
@TheDarkKnot5 жыл бұрын
Alithia451 Understand where you are coming from! However what can really help is tonality - a muted shirt, even if patterned, will work with a bolder tie that is patterned. If the shirt is bold e.g gingham and the tie is bold, it can clash even if patterns and colors seem to work.
@wadebolderman32504 жыл бұрын
John, I hope you can take some careful and friendly criticism. Imo, the half Windsor knot is not working for your body size. It’s actually cutting your shoulders down, and who needs that right? Also the lapels on this suit aren’t helping you either. You can get away with it on a casual, darker sport coat, but on a suit it doesn’t work. You should be wearing wider lapels b a suit. It will broaden your shoulders and make your body look in better proportion. Just trying to help, All the best! Perry

Excellent explanation for mixing patterns but I gotta take issue with you on pocket squares. I've always been taught that the pocket square should "relate" to the tie but never match it. Given that, I think you are way off on some outfits. Most glaring error is the very first outfit. Good looking outfit but the pocket square is not even close to acceptable. Some of the others, green with orange? Cringeworthy. Love your channel but IMO, you've missed the mark here a bit.
@40OverFashion5 жыл бұрын
No worries Robert. But, what do you mean by relate but not match? Just because our eye doesn’t like certain colors together, that doesn’t mean that they’re still not complementary
@Bharat0055 жыл бұрын
Hey I normally enjoy your videos but on this one, I don't agree with your colour selections & the suits you wore, the jackets don't seem to fit well..... plus the strips & checks selection is over rated....
@aussiestallion695 жыл бұрын
Sorry 60% of your combos do not work. I think you need a bigger selection of pocket squares. I wear a tie with pocket square near every work day, so I’m commenting from a point of view of being a fan of pocket squares.
