What also helps in the overhead track is adding an envelope plugin to diminish the transients of the snare & kick which may interfere with the other drum tracks or cause phase issues depending on how loud the OH track is in the mix. Cymbals usually don't need hard transients to cut through, maybe just the ride cymbal but then again you already have a separate ride track.

Nice! thanks sooo much! do you also make a video for toms ? i find it really hard to get the balance between fat and good hearable through the mix without masking too much ...

Amazing stuff. Bought Systematic Mixing Guide years ago and it helped me a lot through my productions and mindset. Video is on point and will definitely look into Soothe aswel. Keep it up.

This was incredibly well put and explained! I cannot wait for more of your videos. What would you use instead of Soothe if you had to?

Nicely done, Ermz! Might have to look at that "Soothe" plugin... :) However, next time try it with ACTUAL drums :P

Excellent video. It's nice to see 4-5 eq points all being cuts rather than boosts on the overheads...a rarity these days it seems. And Soothe is SO good!

By the way, because of wrong mic position, I got a massive spike when playing the ride only (on my two overhead tracks, I don't have spot mics). What would be the best way to attenuate that zingy ride while keeping the nice crashes I'm getting?

Just maximize the session window and it should merge.

Just wondering if the overhead reverb is the same one youd send the snare mics to or a different one?
@SystematicProductions6 жыл бұрын
I tend to use a different reverb specifically tailored to the snare.

nice effort, but to my hears you """missed the mark""". not that by themselves the cymbals sound bad (they actually sounded really good to begin with though a bit dark but smooth), but the central fq you decided to focus on (really high highs) is just fighting with the highs of the synths. in this particular case, i would have set up a bell with a medium Q and sweep a bit to complement the synths lower like CLA or Randy Staub would do around 2,5kh to 3,5/4kh. I think the 3,2-4k notch has become a bit of a mimetic convulsion due to much solo monitoring or to much spent without all the others elements. My 2 cents ^^
