Your guideline for cavitation plate is good since it is based on function. I was not aware that a plate running below water level could cause problems but it makes sense especially in a turn. Most boats I see at boat shows have the engines mounted what appears to be low. I look at the cav plate WRT the trailing edge of the hull. Most are below the running surface of the boat so probably end covered. I put jack plates on my twin engine 26’ center console. It took 1.75” to get the cav plates running on the surface. Everything seemed to run so much more smoothly and the fuel consumption really improved. The Yamahas have fuel rate consumption to 2 decimal points. My background is engineering so I watch the abstract stuff just for fun. I’m gonna end up on somebody’s front lawn soon. Good thing the wife has no interest and has a loud scream. She watches where I think I’m going. Perfect relationship.

Thank you! Yeah, those little things do make a big difference. And jack plates really give you the ability to play around with it. Isn't it amazing how the fuel economy goes up after you get rid of that extra drag?! Hahaha that's funny, the perfect partner lol

The water will rise greatly on this particular hull design, and the water pickups are a good distance back. If the back of the boat did not have this much setback from the hull, it wold probably be too high.

I was wondering,..how do you add a power pack to adjust your tilt to the transom on most motors? Or can you just let the pressure off with a screwdriver on the tilt motor and do it manually?
@BornAgainBoating Жыл бұрын
You can do it manually, but you can also just like you said put a power pack on the engine where the power and ground cables go and use the trim. Or like Mercury needs clean power, so you can just pull the wires that go to the trim unit out and disconnect the bullet connectors and then put power to them there to run the trim and get the angle you need.

next time, have a place to hang the motors after removal straight from the boat to the hangers then onto the creates after new motors are installed next time cut the bolts off when there's enough space between the bracket and boat so you dont torque damage the transom next time, install hydrophilic or electric jack plates. ( a must ). You need full up, down, forwards, and back adjustability while under way at high speed to get it dialed in perfectly on the go . Seal them up water tight 1st and let them dry......... THEN mount e motors. next time, install motor leashes ( aka seat belts ) Nice boat . great channel .

Hi bro.. I wanna move up my twin Yamaha engines. Is it okay if there is a gap between the motor and top of transom?
@BornAgainBoating3 ай бұрын
As long as I am understanding what you are saying then absolutely! The outboard shouldn't be "hanging" or "sitting" on top of the transom, it should be height adjusted correctly and bolted into place so if it's got space between the little things that stick out from the bracket and the top of the transom, no issue there

Ive got a question about cav plate height. So for every foot back from the transom it should be one inch above the hull? If to low would it cause the boat to porpoise?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Generally between 1/2-1" for every foot yes. If it is to low, then the anti-ventilation plate will get pulled under the water and yes it can cause porpoising. You can have someone with you and run the boat and just go back to the transom and look down, you'll be able to see if it is sunk under the water or riding just on top of the water! :)

@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That does sound to be a little low. The main thing is that you don't want that cavitation plate to be under the water coming off of the bottom of the hull when you are running. Generally you check this with the engine tilted all the way down or all of the way in! What are you planning on repowering with?

Thanks for the informative and interesting rigging video! One question and it has nothing to do with the engine rigging part...@ 2:08 what in the heck is that cobbled-up fiberglass patch job?!!? I thought Yellowfin had better workmanship than what I see in that segment. It was obviously done after the original engines were installed.
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Thank you for commenting. Hahaha, it's amazing what you can find deep in the depths of a boat! To be honest, I have no idea what is going on there, some of the boats that we work on get a ton of abuse put on them and you never know what you might find. Yellowfins are a great boat, but they are still made out of wood too. Transoms take such an abuse, especially in heavy heavy seas with all the weight and torque of the engines. I'm not sure who patched that up or if it was just done to give a little more strength to the transom. Thanks for noticing!

Should i raise it a couple more inches?
@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
Raise it up one hole on the bracket and see what that does, but take into consideration at wide open throttle the set up might be perfect :/ sounds like a heavier boat, so at cruising speed like 3800 the boat is sitting deeper in the water and so the water is able to flow over the top of the plate

Might seem like a silly question but when someone repowers a boat, what do they usually do with the old engines? Are they traded in on the spot?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
No, that's not a silly question at all. It depends on the owners and the engines. Some engines arent worth any money, so they get sold to a wholesale that parts then out and scraps the engine. Other engines are sold to a different wholesaler that then repowers boats and sells them. Sometimes the owners have someone that they want to give the engines too or sell them too and then sometimes the owners want any too much money for them and so no one buys them and they sit until they are worth even less that they would have if they would have been sold. I guess it really depends on the owner! Great question, thank you for asking :)

where should the anti-ventilation plate sit in a single motor application? I have a single 130 E-TEC on my 17'7'' Pionner Sportfish and have always thought it sat too low.

Does that same method work on mounting a engine on a Armstrong bracket?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Yes, and the armstrong bracket should have a little bit of a incline to it as well. The biggest thing is that you don't want the anti-ventilation plate to be under the water or high enough that the water pickups can suck in air from being too high out of the water.

Why the outboards at the extremity are always mounted higher than the one at the center ? Can you explain that ?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Certainly! You'll probably notice that on all boats that have triples or quads that the two outside engines are either mounted higher or they are a shorter driveshaft length than the center engine or engines. That is just simply to form to the hull of the boat. As the water comes off of the bottom of the hull, the only thing you want in the water is the lower unit. So that the water doesn't go over the anti-cavitation plate and suck the back of the boat down and make it perform poorly in the water. Most of the time the center engine is a 30 inch driveshaft and the outsides are 25 inch. On quads the center engines are still 30's but depending on the hull, the outsides will be 20 inch driveshaft's! Hopefully this helps out, let me know if you want to know something else! In my outboards manual it says to mount the outboards anti ventilation plate slightly LOWER than the boats keel ( 10mm to 30mm ) which is wrong .... glad I didnt follow that advice , good to see the correct advice in this video , ended up mounting my outboards antiventilation plate about 20mm higher than the keel , couldnt go any higher but another 10 or 15mm higher would be ideal .

@BornAgainBoating4 жыл бұрын
Hello, sorry for the confusion. No I can't because every boat is different. That is why you have to measure between the steering arm and the propshaft. Compare the two distances and turn the propshafts in about a 1/4 more than the steering arms.

The best motor/transom match is the one where water flow at speed skims right under the upper small plate, that's under the protruding front lip. Once there prop will work spot on on all water cond ranging from flat calm to choppy, windy water conditions. From there can go straight for a prop maximization to pull wot revs up towards middle to max wot rpm range as usually loaded. Once there and with deck load evenly distributed , combo will achieve a superb fast hole shot plane. To check that spot on height must pull head out transom and visually check what's going on at back of motor, will know if in need to raise or lower a tad the motor as this is not a wild guessing motor installation.

Cavitation and ventilation are different. The plate above the propeller is an anti-ventilation plate, prevents air from entering the propeller from above while running. Cavitation is the collapsing of small negative pressure bubbles

"Water Pressure Gauges"; By now, most outboard manufacturers have adopted the "exhaust out the prop" dump. For all the Merc Lovers, please always "Keep and Eye On" those water pressure gauges. Whether. Nylon or Plastic, the impellers that drive cold water from beneath the Cavitation Plate up and into the engine block, will melt down in seconds, if sufficient water pressure Isn't consistently maintained, especially if you like to Trim the engine out creating less hull contact with lake or ocean water. (don't ask how I discovered this) I ran a 3 blade Cleaver (on an outboard?) a Cleaver tends to "Pick the transom area Up and Out" of the water And so; Trimming raises the front of the hull out of the water and then, the cleaver raises the back! Mucho airborne with a slight "walking to the right from time to time". Got 86mph on a 21 Challenger with One 300 Black Max. (one hand on the wheel) My mistake was (to cheap to) go for the ModVP 270hp EFI! 13 grand for the 300 Black Max/18 grand for the VP! doy. Always had to; "go lay down for an hour", after a great boating day! Sincerely your Retired Salvation Army Major

As per 3 engine outboards; I'm pretty sue that With Two Outboards, the Propellers swing in forward gear (and reverse) in Opposite directions. In essence, each individual gear case to the propeller would be configured Specifically to do this. How do you manage 3 propellers? In my mind, two of them would be swinging in the same direction. thanks a great video.

You are exactly right! The middle engine is another right-hand gear case. Then the port is still a left-handed case. Thank you!

@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
@@davidjessee7701 nope, you're right, there's only two control handles. They do what mercury calls "shadow mode". Which just means that when both handles are in the same position whether forward or reverse. The center engine will mimick the two outside engines and go into that gear. Now if you put port in forward and starboard in reverse. The center engine will stay in neutral!

motor noob here replaced my transom and mounted my motor too low.. suggestions?
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
Hello, did you just hang it to low or did you drill the holes and the engine is all the way up and still to low? If you just hung it low, raise it up. If you drilled the holes to low. That stinks. Best thing to do in that case is pull the engine and fill the holes with whatever epoxy you used in the transom. Then get some transom savors or those plates that go from hole to hole for the engine mounting bolts. Then redrill the new mounting holes and hang the motor at the right height. That kind of sucks, sorry to hear that.

@@BornAgainBoating thanks for replying. the 130hp honda straddles a new coosa transom sitting about 6 inches too low (yes i failed to properly measure). i wasn't sure about drilling and raising the motor if that would create a possible instability issue without the motor resting/straddling the transom? reality's pinching me the correct fix is making a new transom. ugh
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
@@_noname617 No, that's not the reality. Coosa is super strong. As long as you layed the glass properly with enough layers and depending on how thick you made the transom. You should be able to remove, redrill, and reset the engine. It sounds almost like you have too long a driveshaft on the engine. Like you're using a 25" engine and you need a 20". What kind of boat is this?
@_noname6175 жыл бұрын
@@BornAgainBoating okay nice you're giving hope on this '22 novi hull project boat. the transom two different coosa layers= 3.5 inches. from what you're saying i'm thinking about lifting the motor and building-up the transom from left-over materials + glass/paint + measure new holes, drill, and place motor. ecstatically it'll look great, the worry was "will the motor not resting on the transom" possibly compromise a possible integrity issue"? you make sense the "glass was layed properly" "the carriage bolts should hold it, well after 4 months in the water her rear's in great shape. 4 inches of draft she's running a short shaft with 6 inches too deep, but she's a putter put-put 3,500 rpm wknd lobster boat. i hadn't realized how maligned things could get by from being off by fractals. really appreciate your feedback.
@BornAgainBoating5 жыл бұрын
@No Name no worries man. That actually sounds like a complicated situation you are in. So you are using a short shaft which usually means it is a 20" shaft. Now, as far as the transom goes, two layers of coosa is perfect and well strong enough for that engine. Usually, you will say two layers of mat and then a layer of woven on top of that for the outsides of the transom, and then a layer of mat in between the two sheets of coosa. When you say you are going to be "adding" material to the top of the transom in order to raise the engine? That will affect the strength of the transom for sure. Just out of curiosity, have you looked into just buying a fixed jack plate that you can put on and raise the engine to the correct height? That will save you a ton of time and to be honest, for the 130, it won't compromise your strength. You can find a TH Marine fixed jack plate that will raise the engine up 5 inches or so and they cost anywhere from $100-$300. For the money, I would go that route to save yourself a tone of time and effort. Not to mention the time off the water! For a weekend lobster boat, buy the jack plate and have the project done in a weekend!
