I stop to mount but I do a flying dismount. I find the flying mount just too risky
@themohawkfoundation5 жыл бұрын
Typically stop to mount and fly off, but I had a shoe snag the ground HARD last weekend and send me sliding during a 70.3! Might be doing stop mount and dismount at my 140.6 next month now!

The tip that i use : Mount: learn the flying mount on lower saddle and make it higher if you feel confident Dismount: I convert my running shoes to a clipless pedal(mtb), so i just gotta unclip it Ik my tips is bad

GTN this is one of the best videos you have done yet, please do more like it! We never actually get to see these parts of the races so watching transitions or mounting ect.. of the pro's is very interesting, and you guys have the media passes to be able to show us that. Never would have known how unprofessional some of the professionals look getting onto their bikes xD Also this is why i always put my bike shoes on in T1 and then can jump easily onto the bike no worries. It looks like joe skipper had an issue because his shoes hit the ground making his chain jump and then cause a bigger problem.

It seemed that in his case his shoes were not secured with rubber bands or they fell out as he was running out.

Agree 100%. I'm new to the sport and have been debating practicing this method out of T1 and after seeing the risk of so much time lost vs what little time there is to be gained I just can't see the value in it. I'll stick to putting the shoes on first. The flying dismount however does appear to have value.

@@motoarch The only downside to running in your cycling shoes is that is quite uncomfortable and - depending on the cleats of course - quite slippery to run on the cleats.
@toml47825 жыл бұрын
To avoid embarrassment, just wear the shoes, jump on the bike and start pedaling - did that last short distance and took over everyone who struggled with their flying mount. There is a difference between pro's and the average joe ;)

Was racing ironman 70.3 yesterday and my father was there watching the race, according to him some athletes fell from the bike doing a flying mount because their leg got caught by the bottles hanging at the back of the saddle. One had to abandon after that. be sure you practice well and with all the race stuff guys !

For being "pros" I am amazed how bad some of those mounts & dismounts were. It's not that hard to practice for 5-10 minutes a week to make them smooth, fast, and perfect every time. You missed recognizing the difference in a bad and good dismount at 8:39. Most are holding onto the bars way too long after the dismount before going to the saddle. Seb Kienle was a good example of a smooth a fast dismount that looked very easy.

takeaway advice is: if you're going to blow the dismount, make sure you make it worth it @10:44 lucy was in way too hot for her to take her hands off the handlebars. she was using her bike just to keep herself up. but shoes bouncing around after dismount is very annoying. only way around it is to level the pedals before you dismount, but then you can't stand on one pedal as you dismount. we need some self leveling pedal technology already!
@karstenmeinders48445 жыл бұрын
My key learnings:- for the mount: play safe, just stop, get on your bike and start pedalling easily to get speed and then get into your shoes- for the dismount: learn where the bike split ends (= where the dismount line is actually located) and prepare your dismount in a relaxed way. In my last race, I pedalled hard until the last corner and suddenly the dismount line appeared - I stopped, released the shoes from the pedals and felt crampy legs so I did not move any further. After 4 minutes, I felt able to make little movements and first walked with my bike across the finish line and then was able to run slowly to hand over the bike to the helpers.But it is hard to understand how someone can actually miss the finish line!

Mark, that was absolutely amazing! Super entertaining and insightful! What would have been interesting as well is to see the struggle of the athletes that put their foot on top of the shoes... .that's only half job done ;)

HOnestly in the big picture, since this is not the last event, you can easily spend those 10 seconds to get shoes on and mount without running. The bike and run are long enough to make up for that time spent.

“The heat of the moment” is usually the catch for me. Most often I stop for mount and dismount and don’t do it flying.
@charlesroberts21665 жыл бұрын
Well, some of that was really cringe-making. It has always staggered me that with the pros & non-pros they spend thousands on the bikes & aero helmets etc., but still make such a hash of mounting & dismounting. They say that transition is the fourth discipline ... mounting & dismounting should be the 5th. My first few attempts were humiliating, to say the least & to carry the sound, through the whole race, of the spectators actually laughing didn't do the ego many favours! So, to avoid any repeats of that embarrassment, loads & loads of practice quickly followed. Am still crap at the swim, bike & runs ... but my mounts & dismounts are awesome! ;-)

An interesting comparison would be to show the difference in time running to the mount line in cycling shoes vs. the approach here where everyone is running barefoot. Then show the same approach for dismounting where they dismount while wearing their shoes and then just rip them off their feet or run in them to the transition area. How much slower is it really, or is it still a matter of being practiced in whatever approach you've chosen?

I'm planning to do my first Triathlon this summer and have started practicing my mounts (runners on normal pedals or cage clips I could do all day, but I just started riding clipless and am having to modify my technique): I was shocked at how bad these pro transitions were (I just assumed they'd look...professional I guess: is this just because they're nackered coming out of the swim? Also, missing the dismount line I can totally see: there's flags and lines all over the course, you're riding for hours, then you're supposed to pick one flag and one line out of that chaos...

I agree with the mtb shoe use. They argue that, road shoes provide more power (questionable...), yet you can RUN without stubbing your toes or chaffing your feet and once you're in the bike, click and go...
@chetlangford21445 жыл бұрын
@@vikingga lolol more power? Why would a road shoe provide more power over a mtb shoe? Wouldn't a mtb shoe be more durable than a road shoe! Absolutely they can run click and go! Both side would click in so no way you could miss! Lake shoes are pretty stiff!
@JKortink5 жыл бұрын
@@chetlangford2144 MTB shoes are often made more flexible than road shoes, exactly because people are going to be walking in them. Less stiffness means loss of power to the pedals.
