'How to... Move a washing machine without damaging the pipes by using polish and string'
(Two great DIY tips in one video! )
First top tip;
Use a bit of furniture polish to lube the floor area where the washing machine or other heavy appliance usually sits on. Since most washing machines etc have rubberrised feet, and most kitchen floors will be tiled, wood or laminate wood, a small bit of furniture polish will enable one person to slide the unit back home. Don't go mad with it otherwise it might spread and make your floor slippery.
Second top tip;
If the area behind the washing machine is small and the pipes hoses are long and flop down, instead of ramming the machine back in and running the risk of crimping or trapping a hot or cold hose or even the mains cord, just hold the pipes vertical against the rear of the machine using a long piece of twine or cord looped around and held in your hand as you carefully slide and position the appliance back home. As soon as it's almost there, release one of the string ends and pull out the string thus leaving the pipes and power cable in roughly vertical position at the back and not wedged tight between the floor and the rear feet.

IT WORKS! You saved my back and my machine. Furniture polish on the tile made the massive sacked unit move like it was on ice. As long as the machines do not go on a walkabout, I should be good! I will use a bit of isopropyl alcohol on the tile to make sure the polish is banished. Blessings to you, my good man!

One of the reasons I've kept the machine so long (apart from being easy to service and repair) is some new machines seem to have grown in size by a few millimetres - just enough to prevent it fitting between the units.

***** Oh great. So now I really feel like eating a huge bowl of apple crumble and custard. Nom nom nom... As for the leads in an engine, they are silicone covered. Washing machine feet are just low grade rubber that do eventually dry out, crack, go hard and rot. Petroleum products speed that decay up, which is why garages use tool boxes on silicone wheels, rather than cheap black rubber. Hot engines are also good for heating up apple crumble and custard. :oD

Good point. Luckily the effects of the polish do wear off so long as it's used sparingly. A weak mix of washing up liquid in water in a plant sprayer could be used instead and it would dry up leaving no residue.

Hey, this was a fantastic tip. Works like wonder. Two questions arises out of this solution. Doesn't the polish (chemicals) not react with the rubber feet of the machine and weaken or disintegrate it? Once the washing machine is slid into its place under the counter, doesn't the machine slide around due to the slippery rubber feet (and the whole point of putting a rubber feet to the washing machine is lost). Since there is less space in your case, the machine will stay put but not without constantly rubbing itself to one side of the wall. Mechanically, if the machine is not firmly placed on the ground, the motor will/may be affected due to constant wobbling. Look forward to your thoughts on the same. 🖖
@TK42138
@TK42138 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for watching. Those are good questions. I found that the furniture polish does eventually evaporate/dry up. I only used minimum amount - just enough to reduce friction. Water with a drop of liquid dish soap and sprayed with a plant sprayer would work too and would dry quicker. The polish didn't harm the rubber feet.

@TK42138
@TK42138 2 жыл бұрын
Get a plant sprayer and fill it with water and a drop of washing-up liquid. Mix it up then spray it in front of the feet. This will help it slide forward. You will need to pull it forward from the drum while lifting slightly. If there's room either side of the machine between the cupboard units then wriggle it out. I used some furniture polish sprayed on the floor which helps it move but don't use too much as it will make floor slippery until it dries.

@TK42138
@TK42138 6 жыл бұрын
dancingdivamissa Unless it has wheels you literally open the drum door, and drag and lift just enough to reduce friction on the rubber feet. Most machines are on rubber pads which help absorb vibration and prevent it moving around however these pads also make it a tad awkward to move. I usually spray a small amount of furniture polish just under the front of the w/machine at the corners. This helps the feet slide.

@TK42138
@TK42138 2 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky situation. Is there any space or wriggle room to pivot the machine forward so the rear feet lift over the step due to the incomplete floor? Might have to lift it by the drum and slide two laminated floor planks - one each side so as one side is lifted the plank is positioned under the rear feet. Failing that the use of a long pry bar that can fit between the floor and the machine but take precautions not to damage the plastic trim on the machine.

@@TK42138 What a kind person you are to reply, thank you. So yes it's an incomplete floor. I have pulled it 50cm forward, it is 58cm in depth. The waste pipe water was pouring out the back as a pipe is displaced (I think) so I emptied it manually. It's awful, there is no room for manoeuvre at the top either. I wish I could show you a pic. It's basically lodged in there. I'll try the polish as I have no planks. Thanks again

Spray a small amount of water and a drop of dish soap on the floor in front of the machine (use a plant sprayer) and then pull out the washing machine by the drum...and then hope the builders, kitchen fitters or previous owner tiled or continued the flooring underneath it so the rear feet don't catch.

Wouldn't olive oil or washing up liquid be better?
@TK42138
@TK42138 4 жыл бұрын
No because olive oil will go rancid and washing up liquid - especially the types with blue or green colouring will semi dry out and possibly stain any tiles. Plus it contains a lot of salt (added in manufacture as a bulking agent) which could cause corrosion of the washing machine. The wax polish is only a thin layer - you don't need much - and it dries off anyway.

@TK42138

It's not often it gets dragged out and dust will build up underneath it. Certainly wouldn't want to keep moving a machine just to clean under it as you risk straining the hoses.

What if the floor is lino?
@TK42138
@TK42138 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. If the lino extends under the washing machine then make up some water and couple of drops of dish soap/washing up liquid, put it in a plant sprayer and spray some on the floor in front of the washing machine. The water/soap mix should be enough to reduce friction and help slide the machine out. Wax spray polish will work but might make the floor slippery. Using water with bit of soap will eventually evaporate or can be mopped up once the machine is out.

Just moved house and can't get the washer in place because the bastard who fitted the kitchen flooring left a gap in the laminate wood - one empty plank's worth near the back so the feet catch on the edge of the rear plank. There's about 5 mm top clearance and down each side so I can't rock the washer forwards to lift the rear feet to get them over the edge. The planks won't budge because the fitted kitchen is on top, and I've tried loads of different shims but the feet always catch FFS. Spent 3 hours trying different to fill the gap with various wood and cardboard shims but nothing is the right size. Looks like I have to get some hardwood of the right thickness to fill the fucking gap....
