Try moving the playhead to a place in your video where there are subtitles. Perhaps that's why you aren't seeing any?

@@ALPHA_MEDIA You go to Visual Effects / Remove a Color, then drag that onto the screen and select black to remove. Or you can crop the black screen down to the subtitles, then move them up together.

I've just found this video and THANK YOU!! I had some videos where the subject had slumped in his seat and the subtitles were right across his face, with burned-in captions required! As an aside, I've found that if you leave the black background up and instead crop the subtitles, they stay on a black background which can be easier to read.

Next time you decide to do this, add a full screen green box behind the captions and chroma key that color out to keep the black border behind the captions on import. When you import, add the visual effect "remove a color", then use the color picker to pick the green, set the Tolerance to 0%, Softness to 46%, Hue to 0%, and Defringe to -100%. You should be good to go after holding alt to trim the top of the clip down to the top of the caption box.

thank you, that was what i need to know...and how can I add transparent black fill behind of the subtitle?
@RobtheMaritimer3 жыл бұрын
To add the transparent fill behind subtitles that have been raised up is a little trickier. You can add a rectangle shape "annotation" behind the subtitle. However, to get the "varying widths" that you see in actual subtitles, you'd have to create a separate rectangle annotation for each subtitle, and size it appropriately. That could be quite time consuming if you have a lot of subtitles. If you don't need varying widths, then you could just create one annotation, and make sure it's wide enough to account for your longest subtitle. If you'd like me to show this in a future video, let me know :)

This worked really well, except that if you need the black background for your cc, then removing black, removes the cc background as well. I have attempted using a different colored annotation box but to no avail. Any suggestions?
@RobtheMaritimer3 жыл бұрын
It's definitely trickier if you want to keep a subtitle background. There is no easy way (that I'm aware of) to keep it automatically, so what I do is I add a background using Annotations. The one I find looks exactly like the automatic captions background (with the slightly rounded edges) is under Annotations, choose "Basic" then the third choice is a black rectangle. Choose that one. Once you have your subtitles in place, put the new annotation "under" your subtitles, and resize to fit. You can also make it semi-transparent if you like. This is a quick fix if you don't mind the annotation being a constant width all the way through... just make sure to size it large enough to encompass your longest subtitle. If you do want varying widths to match your subtitles, then that's going to be a lot more work as you'll have to split up the annotation and resize each one. Should I make a video to show this process?

The idea has to be implemented a bit different for this to work on a MaBook Pro, Camtasia 2021. So I din't get a separate track for the Captions. Captions will only show when my Movie track is visible. My work around it was to hide everything else except the video. Also, a shape or element with the caption didn't work to export. So first I hid every other track and only exported the video with the caption. I then imported it, used the crop tool to leave out the video and only the caption visible. The caption had a black background, so I used the Remove Color tool. That's it, working perfectly! Hope this helps others as an option to solve this new issue. Thanks for your tip Rob, just paying it forward.

@RobtheMaritimer Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure... could it be that you have your subtitle track "hidden" in the timeline? Could be a few things but I would have to look at your file to know for sure..

I tried this twice and had no luck. the first time I went to render the video, it did allow me to select MP4, not sure if that changes anything. I liked your video, just not sure what I am doing wrong on my end.
@RobtheMaritimer3 жыл бұрын
Hi Allison... sorry you're having trouble! I'm not exactly sure what the issue is you're having, but perhaps it's because you have no "visual" components to your video when you render. When you hide the video and just try to render the subtitles only, it won't work unless you have something visual on the screen. I usually just put in a black square annotation, as then it won't show up at all... but Camtasia recognizes it as "something" on the screen and will therefore allow the render to happen. It's a way to trick Camtasia into rendering only the subtitles. Does that help?

when I bring in the rendered video, there is nothing that shows. I have to press CC when watching it as a video- how do I get the captions to show when I pull the video into Camtasia?
@RobtheMaritimer Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I fully understand your issue. "When you bring in the rendered video"... are you referring to the render of just the subtitles/captions? If so, once you put that in the timeline, be sure to crop it from the top down so that the background "main" video shows. THEN you can use the "remove color" tool to remove the black and only leave the subtitles. If you don't see any subtitles at all, then perhaps there are no subtitles where your playhead is... in that case, move your playhead in the timeline to a spot where there are subtitles. Does that help?
@DrAbigailPamich Жыл бұрын
@@RobtheMaritimer Hi Rob, sorry for not being clear. I followed your video I had my main timeline. I created the captions and the black square. I followed it all and rendered out the captions and the black square (with the other items on the time line invisible). However when I went to watch it as an mp4 , once rendered, it was just a black square with no writing However - When I pressed CC at the bottom of the MP4, the captions appeared. I then imported this rendered captions video into my time line. It was just the black square again. I did this three times but the captions were not showing (when I brought it to the timeline). I am thinking there is something I am missing? I scrolled it through the whole rendered MP4 of captions and none were showing once it was in the timeline (they were white writing on pink background). I am stumped as to why, in this project they are not showing. Could it be Im using an earlier version of camtasia? Is it something to do with closed verses open captions? I love your videos BTW and really appreciate your responding to me.
@RobtheMaritimer Жыл бұрын
When you say you "pressed the CC at the bottom of the MP4" that confuses me a little... did you perhaps render the video "with controls"? Because if you just render as a pure mp4 video file, there should be no CC option at all... the new text video you rendered should just show the text, always. You should have rendered a video that has the text at the bottom, burned in, and the rest of the video would be blank or have your black square in it. Then when you bring that video into your project, you can crop away the top part of it, remove the "black color", and then you should just be left with the white text. Does that make sense? I hope that helps!

What if you added the subtitles manually? Do you know how to move them ?
@RobtheMaritimer Жыл бұрын
By "adding them manually", I assume you mean adding them as text callouts? If so, then yes, it's very easy to move them... simply click on them on the canvas and drag them to wherever you want them. However, if using the subtitling/captioning feature, there is no way to do that. There are benefits to using that feature... it's much quicker to add a lot of subtitles and you can export SRT files... but if you only have a few captions to add then just adding them manually is the answer :-)

@RobtheMaritimer2 жыл бұрын
Thank you... you're right! I agree that using callouts is probably the best way to do it for shorter videos... but if you're subtitling a video that's 5, 10, 20 or even 60 minutes long, or if you're importing an SRT file with the subtitle timings already in place, that's when this method comes in handy. But if the video was less than 2 minutes long, then callouts are probably the way to go. :-)
