Nah, there are many ways to success. I got the muscle up without kipping at all, just pulling explosively from a dead hang in an L sit, higher and higher, until I could pull so high that I could just lean forward at the top to rest over the bar. I personally prefer the strict muscle up from dead hang without the pendulum swing at the start
