The autoresolve system stating that you loose some units and then changing its mind has been in the game for a while methinks. Had massive issues with it while I played Wulfhart campaigns since I was tying to autoresolve the "Autospawned bullshit lizardmen armies" from the faction mechanic. It got so bad that I would actually loose battles after hitting autoresolve, even though the game itself estimated that I would not loose anything. *Fart sound*

I only ran into that bug yesterday. Was lazy and decided to autoresolve a battle against DE with my stegodon doomstack on VH/VH. It said I would lose one stegodon, so I'm like "welp, not ideal, but I can't be bothered." I lose 10 of them, and the other 8 have exactly 67 HP left. Slann and Oracle were mostly healthy though. Thank goodness I don't play legendary.

Thank you cheese father, Thank you for bailing me out of this dumb situation. When I made the attack I thought I had enough movement to attack the settlement so that's why I made the dumb attack. Yeah I'll do what you showed in this video, I have no qualms with cheese. Also this is my first time playing dwarves so I don't really know what kind of armies I should be playing. If anyone in the comments or Legend could give me some recommendations for different dwarf army comps that would be nice. Anti skaven armies would be nice too, even if it's just an auto resolve army.

full slayer stack is the easiest anti-skaven army as you just charge at them and they can't handle it as the maps aren't big enough for them to escape to set up weapons teams (need to split your force up a bit so they can't pin down entire army). Karak Kadrin is by far the easiest dwarf campaign on legendary as the AI can't handle 20 slayers running at their face from all directions.

Click on the place/target you want to move to and hold the left click down and it will tell you if you can get there in one turn, any red movement route marker indicates it will take more than one turn. Right click to cancel the movement if you do not want to move there. When fighting Skaven then you can also go into ambush stance to hide your army or as Legend says, encamp stance. I have found a good anti skaven army that can survive an ambush easily is mainly ironbreaker, irondrakes and gyrocopter, a few thunders. Massed artillery and only ranged stack is going to have a hard time. As legend says though the game gives you plenty of tools, checks etc to avoid the ambush in the first place without even resorting to the stance swapping cheese he showed.

Gyrobomber spam is decent against Skaven, because they don't care about menace below, i personally get 3 engineers with it, with the stalk skill, and try to have stalk on the lord as well. There's a Stalk/Snipe rune for artillery that I use in one of these armies

In the preview auto-resolve function thinks it's the encamp stance, but when you actually hit auto, it calculates 'for real', and all the units got force march applied (game tracks that so you don't just give them to another lord and move again), so they start the battle tired with stat penalties, and the result is different.

I don't think that's the problem. I think it's a bug. I encounter this bug once with Vampire Counts, where none of my skeletons dies but my Varghulf dies when it's shows no losses.

I was playing the tomb kings and discovered this because as the tomb kings you have to use the canopic jar cheese to really speed up your campaign. I feel big headed now because I discovered this before LegendofTotalWar who is the master of campaign total war. I'm feelin' good

You could also go into ambush stance instead of encamp stance. That way your army is hidden, you will probably not get attacked and you have a chance to ambush the enemy if they move. When fighting Skaven, I usually use 75% of my movement range and then go into ambush stance. That seems a lot better than using 50% and encamping.

If your ambush fails then you will get counter ambushed for sure. Encamp stance is far better at preventing you from being ambushed. You in ambush stance does lower your chance of being ambushed but encamp stance is better. Depends how much you trust the RNG gods.

True, if your ambush gets foiled you might still be screwed. So you have to pay attention to where you go into ambush stance, both regarding terrain (i.e. only in an area where you have +75% chance) and nearby enemy armies, cities or agents that might detect you. I don't know what the percentage is on encamp stance. Iirc it does not reduce the chance of being ambushed to zero? My thinking is more along the lines of: In encamp stance the enemy knows where you are and will send overwhelming force to attack you. In ambush stance the enemy does not know where you are and might wander in with a force that you can easily defeat. You might still get attacked by another army after you've sprung your ambush, but at least then you've already reduced their available numbers. Again, I can't say how the odds and numbers work out. I have just noticed that hiding your armies in ambush stance seems to work too (and in my experience maybe better).

The problem of this situation (the one in video), that your army is to close to the settlement, and there is an enemy army there. Which makes the chance of detecting you very close to 100%. So if you want to try your luck with ambush stance, do it far away from enemy armies and heroes.

it's been doing that before the patch for the autoresolve, I guess the battle prediction in auto resolve is not 100% accurate. I have auto resolve lots of battle with it saying Pyrrhic victory only to get a close defeat after you click the auto resolve lol

So yesterday I learned to never trust auto resolve against wood elves. Said it was a pyrrhic victory but only showed that I was going to lose 8 pretty low tier disposable units and was like alright I am fine with that... Yeah nah hit auto resolve and it completely decimated my two armies with zero survivors making it a defeat. Life lesson, don't trust auto resolve.

Also note that, the AI knows in advance if the ambush triggers or not. I once modded out the Stalk Stance for a turn, as in seven battles Alith Anar murdered my last army in an ambush seven times in a row over the end turn. So I modded out his ambush stance to save my disaster campaign, and I expected a regular field battle [or rather, an option for retreat] - but he just outright didn't make the attack.

Well Alith Anar probably had a pretty good ambush success chance. More likely that the AI is programmed to attack if the ambush success chance is over a certain amount. I've had plenty of instances where Skaven armies have attacked me and failed to ambush when they really had no chance in a pitched battle.

It should also be mentioned that the Force March > Swap Lord > Encamp trick obviously doesn't work for the Dark Elves either - as one of the only races in the game who can't encamp! Since, ya' know, Black Ark s exist for their replenishment and recruiting instead.

How to never get caught in force march: Never go into march stance in enemy territory unless for emergencies or if it is 100% safe.

I have never been ambushed by skaven in total war warhammer 2, and I have 420 hours (lol). I always just go into their territory to take them out before declaring war, and otherwise I will be in either ambush stance myself or in encamp stance

In truth, I am one of the 5% with the ambush award. I use Ambush all the time. Example, I want to take a city with my army, however, this is a capital city with fully upgraded walls and garison, plus a massive standing army and a backup army outside the city in reserve. I simply move up my main force outside the red ring area and put them in ambush stance, then bring up a poor force behind but in range of the ambush force red ring. The AI can not resist attacking my poor force and falling into my ambush. My main army destroys them, now the city is only defended by the garrison, that I take easy. Note, Whatever faction I play, I always make a straight line to Skarsnik first, for the 20% ambush buff.

it reduces the ambush success chance by 75%. The chances of success are additive. So if an enemy has an 85% chance to ambush you it goes down to 10% with encamp stance, you can still get ambushed but its very unlikely. If an enemy has 65% chance then the chance is 0%. If the enemy has 175% then it's still 100% chance to get ambushed. The ai is very unlikely to ever have above 100% chance to ambush but it's not unheard of. Skaven have no ceiling on how high their ambush success chance can go with cunning trait.
