You know, as you do with e.g art where you keep telling yourself you're shit so it doesn't go to your head or you keep comparing yourself to completely exceptional people and tell yourself "yeah I'm not as good as them so therefore I suck. " Except in the case of Connor it's not just some random skill, it's his entire life. Either way, I'm 20, time to play catchup in 4 years. If it wasn't for home-ec making me cook, I probably would not have willingly touched a kitchen until my 20's, lol. I was very staunchly against all domestic tasks as a woman as I didn't want to be seen with the mindset of, "Oh, she's a woman, of course she cooks." Was also raised with two brothers, so I really went kicking and screaming into doing anything seen as "feminine", lol. But yes, learn to cook, folks. SO, so much cheaper than take out. Eating fast food will keep you broke like nothing else. Especially if you're ordering delivery. Delivery fees, higher taxes and tipping will make you pay 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of your meal. Make delivery/eating out an occassional treat every few months, not the norm.
@TWMASTER2003 жыл бұрын
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Yeah, cooking is such an important life skill in my opinion. My family is a bit of the opposite from the stereotype as all the men cook while my two sisters are more occasional cooks. I honestly just enjoy cooking and making good food too. And like you said, it's totally not unusual to spend 500USD a month eating out even just as one person. Even if it's simple dishes I strongly believe everyone should learn how to cook. If I didn't learn how to cook living on my own would be a lot more expensive. Even with the cheaper dining out costs in Japan lol.
@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley3 жыл бұрын
@@TWMASTER200 Yeah, I didn't have anything pulled out for dinner last night and as it'd been a while, I actually did do fast food last night for dinner. Mine and my sibling roomate's cars don't work, so we can't just run out and pick up food, which at least would be a lot cheaper. After taxes fees and tipping, we paid nearly $75 for two meals (I wanted a 20pc lemon pepper wings and fries meal from the location, and my sibling got a 10pc with fries and added on a philly cheese steak). Both our meals from the online app were about $25 apiece (food apps price the meals higher than what you'll see in the restuarant, too). I gave a $10 tip, and the rest were taxes and delivery fees, so about $15 in extra charges. Our mom would murder us knowing we'd spent that much on food that only lasted one night, haha! I know grocery stores where I could've done a "pick 5" with five packs of meat for $20...this was three and a half pick 5's that would've lasted us weeks in eating. I have a higher paying job this year so this cost now doesn't hurt me as much as it once would've but this is a perfect example of how had I cooked, I could've had a meal for way, way less. $75 on two meals! My goodness, I'm getting bourgeois, lol! I'll certainly be cooking dinner tonight.
@TWMASTER2003 жыл бұрын
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley Wow, yeah it's crazy how expensive it can get. Luckily in Japan I don't have to deal with tipping and it's actually pretty hard to find a meal that costs more than 20USD here that isn't some crazy quality meat or something. Though that does make it easier to just eat out lol. But even with all that I still spend less overall when I make simple meals at home. The food in grocery stores here can get a bit expensive if you make fancier ingredient heavy meals though. So I usually strike a balance between simple and complex meals with a bit of eating out. But it's always fun to try and make new Japanese meals or try and make an American classic using what I can find at the store.

On the subject of stuff we should learn in school, we need mandatory cooking classes. I have Aspergers syndrome and didn't learn to cook for myself past spaghetti and chilli until I was in college. We should be teaching kids how to buy produce and make sure their food is fully cooked and what essentials to buy. America should do that especially since a class on how to balance a meals nutrition might help with the countries weight issues.

That’s Home Ed...? Your school didn’t have it? Even things they mentioned like finance management and basic level of economics are also taught in high school... what kind of schools are you guys going to? I went to public schools in two different states and they all had those classes Edit2: also I feel like some of those things should be taught by the parents so we shouldn’t be blame schools, schools aren’t responsible for your upbringing
@NegaHumanX3 жыл бұрын
@@kimjongun5613 I'm from Canada, so it might be different. In the schools I went to home ec was optional while I feel it should be mandatory since it is a necessary aspect of life and you can't expect teenagers with no life experience to know what will be helpful in the future. As for teaching people at home, the people who need to learn things like this the most tend to be in family situations where learning from their parents is less of an option. In my case my mom died when I was really young, my dad left us and I was raised by my sister. We didn't have a ton of extra money to spend on teaching me or my brother how to cook. On top of that my sister isn't the best teacher and I have Aspergers syndrome so I'm not the best student. Having cooking as a mandatory class where people can learn not only how to cook, but how different foods effect their bodies, how to learn your own sensitivities and how to properly budget would help to prevent people from falling through the cracks due to unfortunate circumstances or a lack of privilege. All in all I'm not saying that people with the drive and tools available can't catch up on this stuff if they have an interest, but that it is too important to be left out of the mandatory curriculum when gym (where only a handful of classes out the entire year teach you the importance of exercise and the rest is jogging or playing a sport for a bit) is seen as a necessity and has way less of an effect peoples health going forward. Again it could be different in the states and I could just be bringing a hoser perspective (of my catholic high school just did things differently and I'm ignorant too how its is done in other places) but considering Americas obesity rate something needs to be done on a macro level to educate people make the choices that will best benefit them. And where better than the institution whose sole purpose is education to do that?
@kimjongun56133 жыл бұрын
@@NegaHumanX I’m not from the states, I moved to the states in my teens and my dad passed away when I was young so my mom had to work double to support me and my siblings and she still was able to teach us how to cook, sew, and do our taxes. My sister has mental disabilities so it was even harder for my to teach her and she was still able to do it and this is a family who was only able to eat 4 out of the 7 days of the week. I do have to admit that in my schools (before and after moving to the states) didn’t have economics and financial management as obligatory classes but Home Ed was as well as health classes, one things is to provide the education and another is for the students to actually care and learn from it. From my experience both in and outside the states, no one cared for those classes, the teacher spent more time quieting down the class than actually teaching. I still believe families should and have the responsibilities to teach life skills like cooking and doing your taxes because no one cares in school about those classes. I mean, didn’t Joey and Garnt say they found the culinary class boring and then they expect the schools to spend money on adding courses that mostly likely kids will also find boring or not pay attention. I’m sorry that happened to you but I still mean every single thing I have said before: schools are not responsible for your upbringing neither is the government.
@NegaHumanX3 жыл бұрын
@@kimjongun5613 Must have just been my school/area or something because I've talked to a lot of teachers and students about this topic throughout the years. I definitely didn't take home ec in school because I was really into learning to cook but never had the opportunity. As for it being the responsibility of the family to teach life skills I need to disagree. Situation is key and not every family is capable of providing. We probably won't be able to agree on this topic, but I do understand where you're coming from. Personal responsibility is important (I was just talking a few days ago about how people who want more black leads in comics need to start buying comics with black leads). It is up to the individual to fill in the gaps that society leaves. But I also feel that society should fill in those gaps when it comes to something as fundamentally important as the basic health of its people. If there is a system in place that I am unaware of and me and the people I've talked to somehow fell through the cracks it is either not wide spread enough or ineffective in how it is taught.
