Great video…very helpful. I struggle getting my knees and more specifically my back foot, knee etc into the air. Any suggestions?
@OldBrokenSkaterАй бұрын
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Hoping to get some videos up soon on techniques to help improve getting the knees up, as well as other tips for developing board feel. Getting your knees-and especially that back foot-up can be tricky, but it’s all about timing and technique. Try really focusing on popping harder and sucking your knees up like you’re trying to jump over something. Hippie jumps help a lot in building the base for a great ollie. You can practice these on the ground to ensure you're jumping to bring the knees up while keeping your shins in front of your body and your feet flat in the air. Visualize it as if your knees are trying to hit your shoulders when you bring them up-if that makes sense. Once you have the motion down, you can start trying them on your board. Don't worry about height; focus on developing comfort and confidence in your ability to jump on the board. Practice these before each session, then throw in some ollies to mix it up. As you get even more comfortable, you can try hippie jumps while rolling (manageable speed, not lightning fast). Again, don’t focus on height-just on comfort and confidence. Hippie jumps help a lot with bringing the knees up, and if you have a sturdy box, box jumps can help too. Don’t sweat it if it feels awkward at first-everyone struggles with this early on. Keep at it, and you’ll get there! Stay tuned for the upcoming vids; I’ve really scaled my skating back to revisit the basics. Hope this helps a bit!

Facts. You emphasize some key points most tutorials leave out - the balance, weight distribution and posture, in addition to the foot position. They are so key. Thank you for highliting them here.

Thanks! I think I've watched too many tutorials at this point 😂. There are some good ones and some terrible ones, but a lot lack/show this super basic and important information.

Great vid, well put together and explained. Showing the jumping motion without the board is a key thing a lot of tutorials miss out

Thanks!! The jump motion is key, I'm trying to make another random clip that actually shows it in action but I'm removing the board via photoshop. Hopefully it comes out good.

Hope the tips help. I found that rather than striving for a high ollie, if I just focused on the mechanics and technique, eventually I could go higher. The squatting was also huge; I used to hinge over like crazy and needed to get rid of that bad habit. Keep at it with any trick you're practicing, and you'll definitely make progress.

@@OldBrokenSkater that’s the same thing Mike v said I kinda struggle with my back being straight
@OldBrokenSkater6 ай бұрын
takes a little getting used, and also noticing when you're doing it. But every now and then when I still do it I can totally tell the difference. I do air squats at home in the morning or at night, nothing wild just like 10-15 mid way down. Helps to build the muscle memory for it.

@@OldBrokenSkater do like regular squats or stand on my board and squat it feels like unusual for my body to
@OldBrokenSkater6 ай бұрын
Start with regular off the board and aim to just get parallel or as close as possible for now (like sitting but in the air, back straight). None of that gym butt to the ground stuff, just a plain old squat until you feel your muscles engage. If you can do 10 great if you can do 5 or less then do five or less every other day for this week then add one the next week. Then start incorporating the squat that you feel comfy with in to your skate tricks. Keep doing squats for as long as you skate, they are good for you and the lower body.

nice vid. im starting again after a 10 year break. cant ollie higher than my knee yet. also a surfer like you. cheers, good luck!

Funny, I started making these videos a month or so ago and it's been flat ever since 😂 So lucky to be able to skate again. Hoping the flat spell doesn't last long. Sounds like you're getting back into it decently; the first couple of weeks for me, an ollie was nonexistent. But just practicing whenever I could find the time, the muscle memory started to kick in again... for most things. Keep at it, make it fun, good luck, and hope you're getting in the water.

Are you using the flex of the board. It seems to be an illusion. How is the skater jumping up off the board raising the board.
@OldBrokenSkater11 күн бұрын
Good observation! The board’s flex might seem like it contributes to the ollie, but it’s the combination of popping the tail, jumping, and catching with the front foot. If you go to 4:13 in the video and change the "playback speed" (in the gear icon) to 0.25x, you can see the back foot pushes the tail down, causing the board to start to lift the nose, then the front foot catches or levels out the ollie. Same thing at 4:36-this is a good one to see, also at 0.25x playback speed. Hope seeing these two parts gives you a better visual of the pop.

Is the audio in mono?
@OldBrokenSkater6 ай бұрын
Hi, believe it is stereo. Might sound weird I think because of the mic and its noise cancelling feature. Sorry if it does, trying to figure audio stuff out still. *** Sorry it looks I did mess up with audio and its in only on the right. Will work on getting it right
