No DaVinci love? Though FCPX is kinda Fisher Pricey I think people still use the older version I think v7… it’s a shame though. Now it’s iMovie Pro+ 🤪

Haha totally agreed! And yeah, I knew I’d get some flack for not mentioning DaVinci haha. Nothing against it though. I haven’t used it but if you’re looking for something that costs less than Premiere, I’m told it’s a great alternative!

2:58 On a technical level, what do you mean by "syncing the audio and video"? Do they do this in the editing suite? In a timeline? Given you received PolyWAV files, I'm assuming they wouldn't be actually writing the audio data into the video files, right?

Typically the audio is recorded to a separate audio recorder by the sound department while the video is being captured by the camera. Usually the dailies operator will match up the audio with the video on a computer after the fact and export a single clip containing a stereo mix down and video. This proxy makes it easy for the editor to work with. After things are cut together, using timecode references, the final audio mix is created using the original multitrack audio files.

@@klawrence1987 Ah, so they just use the audio to make a proxy at first, I see. That proxy, must then somehow carry over the timecode metadata, right? Otherwise there will be a lot of work to do when changing back to the full-fat files. How do they achieve that?

@@sanjacobs6261 when I worked in the dailies world, we were using really expensive software called On Set Dailies by Colorfront and preparing things to be used in Avid. But yes, the timecode is encoded into the proxies to match the original audio timecode. However, in a more practical world for the indie producer, if you’re using Premiere, you can link the proxies to the originals in Premiere and Premiere takes care of presenting the proxies while editing and exporting the originals. For my own projects, I typically pull the multitrack audio into premiere and sync it using the slate. Then I edit using the original audio files with proxy video. The proxies will have the same duration as the originals which is how they stay lined up.
