Hey 👋 Sam, I like how you added cows at the end of the video. I also try to add some sort of living aspect to my paintings; a bird, a goose, people fishing, a surfer, a kayaker, or someone who happens to walk into the scene. Doing so tells a story. I enjoy that. Thanks!! Nice work.

You inspire me each time I watch to go out and paint. I have benefitted from your method. Thanks! Question...why are "torturer trees" called that? Are they a species of pine?
@SamuelEarpArtist4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bruce. Totara is native to New Zealand and all the native trees have Maori names. The letter ‘O’ in Maori sounds like an ‘or’ sound. I do my best to pronounce the Maori names properly but myself being from England I often butcher the pronunciations. The Latin name for totara tree is Podocarpus totara. 😊

Thanks Sam, I always enjoy your tutorials and your videos. I have one question. I use Langridge Transparent Yellow Oxide that seems much darker than your Yellow Oxide. Is there a difference?
@SamuelEarpArtist4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lonny. Yes there is a difference, yellow oxide is opaque and it's a lighter value colour. I think I have a tube of transparent yellow oxide but I don't often use it. If I were to use it I'd use it as a tinting colour maybe to add a glaze. I have done the same in the past with nickel azo yellow 😊

A question for outdoor painting. When I get all set up to do some work outside I start to get overwhelmed with everything around me I get frustrated and end up forcing the paint and quitting on the piece. What can I do beside just paint outside more to bring down the overwhelming feeling? Thank you in advance.
@jeffhreid4 жыл бұрын
Try bringing a matte the same size as your canvas to use as a viewfinder to look through and isolate the scene you wish to paint. Look through it as often as needed to remind yourself of what to ignore.
@LuciferMorningstar-qi5tt4 жыл бұрын
@@jeffhreid I am guessing thats what people are doing when they have their hands in a square. I will have to stop at hobby lobby and grab a mat before heading out again thank you very much
@SamuelEarpArtist4 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question. Whenever you paint outdoors you should always simplify the scene you are painting otherwise it can be too overwhelming. Don't be afraid to move things around in your composition or eliminate masses / forms in the scene you are painting. With landscape paintings I always go for the less is more approach. For around the first year when I was painting outdoors I really struggled with it but at the same time I had light bulb moments and I learned loads about painting, composition, colours and values. Just keep painting en plein air, I promise you, you'll learn loads from it and your painting will improve 😊
