Hi I washed down my old colour bond fence in sugar soap and hosed off then left till dry.Went to bunnings and got some cheap fence paint $45= 10 lt and sprayed it on .It looks great for 5 years now just a bit of fading where the sun hits it. Will do a re coat in summer should see me out another 5 years.( may try a cement based paint next time a lot cheaper).

Don’t need a primer if you use weathershield as it has self priming agents in it so will only need 2 coats instead of 3
@howtopaintinfo4 жыл бұрын
That's correct. Some paints are self priming. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Its a factory painted metal, a bit like how in the US you refer to plaster board as drywall, over here just about every one refers to factory painted metal as colorbond.

Would you use the same technique and paint for a steel fence repaint in which the paint on the fence is in good condition, no flaking or rust.

Fences are large areas and often all we do is give it a good clean then paint it, it would take awhile to sand it all. I painted a large colour bond shed, all it got was a good wash, 15 years later it still looks good. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

@@howtopaintinfo Thanks. It looks like the fence has been painted with a non water based paint. How would you paint it and what paint would you use?

Hi. I want to spray paint my colorbond fence. Given that it's a big job for me, is it ok if I give it a good wash, let it dry completely before spray painting it with diluted water-based self-priming paint? I'm thinking of not sanding it down. The fence is around 5 years old and in a good condition with no rust. Thanks.
@howtopaintinfo3 жыл бұрын
Yes you should give it a good wash first and let it dry. There are times when sanding is almost impossible to do like fences, sheds etc so for times like this you should use a good quality primer/undercoat that is suitable and will stick to the colourbond. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Gday, Which paint would you recommend to spray window roller shutters, they are in good condition, just needs a good scrub and hose down with the pressure washer. I was thinking about using Solagard but a few people have said to use an epoxy enamel. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Duy Ton That is a good question, acrylic or water based paint will be a lot easier to use but if you don't prepare the surface there is a good chance it will scratch off. Preparing the surface will be the most important thing to do, I have painted lots of garage roller doors with water based paints and have had no issues with paint scratching off.

I have a three year old shed (approx 10×30m) that I want to change the colour of. Given the enormous task of sanding that whole surface area, do you have any suggestions of what I could do to speed up that process?

What is colorbond? Is it just a factory painted metal, or a type of paint coating?
@gazfrc47545 жыл бұрын
Colorbond is a Brand Name ....... and its Both a Factory Painted Metal (such as Roof Sheets) and a type of Paint Coating (Powder Coated) Posts & Beams are usually Powder Coated. www.steel.com.au/products/coated-steel/colorbond-steel/how-colorbond-steel-is-made

Also I prepared the colorbond roof which is ten years old. I used a roof cleaner degreaser and pressure washed it, I did not sand it though given the huge task. I have put the first coat (taubmans all weather surf mist) down with the last bit copping 2mm of quick heavy rain thirty minutes after finishing. Will this be enough preparation for it to last and has the rain destroy the first coat?
@tommo27858 жыл бұрын
+Riley Chandler the reason you clean before you sand is because sanding with contaminants on the surface to be pushed into the key of the substrate when sanding. Yes it does matter, in PC's if you do this, when your coatig is inspected it can fail and cause big big problems. Many painters don't know this, and wrongly attribute their primer letting go on aged enamel to the primer, when it is in fact their prep work and worksmanship which is the issue. Something like 90% of paint failures is due to poor practices or education of the applicator.

what grit are you using in the sanding process?
@howtopaintinfo3 жыл бұрын
I use a soft 120 grit sand paper or coarse sanding sponge, just enough to roughen up the surface with out scratching through to the bare metal. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.
@tonymontana8973 жыл бұрын
@@howtopaintinfo isn't 120 grit a bit rough ? Will the sanding marks come through once the new paint is dry ?
@gixerags750 Жыл бұрын
@Tony Montana it's a sanding sponge m8 not as harsh as 120 sand 'paper' same with the foam blocks.

Please, anyone doing this, please put down an etch primer first, before painting over. It'll save you painting the gutters again in a few years.
@howtopaintinfo5 жыл бұрын
If something is sanded then the paint will stick, if not sanded then maybe an etch primer but I would still trust sanding over an etch primer. Also if you listened you will hear me say you may need a primer depending on the paint you are using. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe

@@howtopaintinfo the rest of your information is accurate and correct, but sanding lightly is often not enough, especially for such a smooth surface. Take bathroom tiles for example. Same principle, but again, a good primer is key. Using the etch primer in this case is the difference between the paint lasting 5 or 15 years. Especially outside in the elements with the harsh aussie sun.

Are you on drugs. colorbond is nothing like tiles.

@@howtopaintinfo Says the guy wearing a Gold Label shirt in the video. Not exactly showing quality there mate. So lose the attitude. Ive worked for near on a decade, giving speciality advice, to painters such as yourself, on the correct way to clean, prepare and paint. So unless you understand how both self priming acrylics and etch primer paints bond to a surface on a chemical level, then there's no point having this conversation. It's a crucial step, and you're missing it. And worse, you're giving other people that outdated information. Go speak to your local specialist paint centre. Anyone worth half their salt will tell you the same.
