Always Board Never Boring embarks on his painting project for Advanced Heroquest. In this first video, he does a quick and easy paint job on Heinrich, the human warrior. This (probably) noble knight is battered but unbowed, and ready to fight some skaven.

Think the shield works well. Gives a worn look that shows it has been through a lot. Great to see these classics painted.

He is a goofy looking guy. I always thought the dwarf was the coolest of the four heroes, but I always had a fondness for Heinrich.

Great job, it's such a joy painting these older minis, it makes a change to switch to something simpler now and again instead of all those over detailed, more complicated newer GW minis

Thanks. To be honest I hardly ever paint newer GW stuff anymore. I tend to do more old stuff or miniatures from other companies that aren’t so fussy.

He looks superb!..............Likely to die gruesomely very soon no doubt........but he'll go out looking good! Really liked the colour choices and I actually thought the battered shield looked good as well. Adding in the scratches and scrapes was a neat touch 🛡️⚔️

There is a link to James Lloyd's bandcamp page in the video description. I believe he kept this particular piece off the list to keep it "exclusive" to my channel, but there's lots of other great (and weird) stuff on there.

Good tip switching out water when switching to non-metallic paints. I've always used separate pots for metallic and non-metallic paints and a small bottle of clean water for thinning paints; never understood why Duncan uses the same pot of water for cleaning and thinning paint.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Maybe he changes his water so frequently it's not a bother. I admit I've always used one pot for thinning and cleaning, partly because I change the water frequently and partly because if I had more I would only get confused and use the wrong one anyway. Or worse, drink one of them instead of my tea.

Great model! So simple but characterful. The Agrax over the Zandri Dust gave a great leather tone. I would have thought it would muddy up such a light base colour but it worked perfectly. Perhaps you went one step too far with the shield, it looked awesome as you put the first flicks of leadbelcher on the edges, I dont think it needed the bright silver. Still looked great though.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

It’s always a fine line between trying to make something look beaten up and messy and something actually being beaten up and messy. I didn’t do much of the final silver, but it was possibly a bit much.

Great guide, well paced so easy to follow for an amateur like myself. I have painted quite a few models now (GW and Mantic), could you let me know what would be a good varnish to use (I haven't varnished any as yet) as well as what brushes you use (especially the finer detailing ones). Thanks
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I like to use spray varnishes, and I always go back to Army Painter Matt Varnish, although Citadel's spray varnish is decent too. I spray for most things, but I also have brush-on Army Painter Matt Varnish, brush-on Stormshield from Citadel, and a brush-on gloss varnish from Eberhard/Faber. For brushes, I almost always use Army Painter and Citadel, and most frequently use a Medium Layer brush from Citadel. I also frequently use a basecoat and detail brush from Army Painter. This is going to look much nicer on the table than unpainted minis. The only issue I see is that the colour of the boots is too close to that of the base so they tend to get lost. I understand the need for the boots to stand out from the dark armour but they also need to stand out from the base so maybe a "browner" colour such as saddle brown would have been better?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
No. The boots and gloves are probably the best bit of the miniature. The boots are different to the flagstones and heavily lined in so they don’t blend.
