Always Board Never Boring continues his HeroQuest restoration project with another simple miniatures painting guide for beginners and gamers in a hurry. This is a painting guide for the terrifying chaos warriors from the original HeroQuest board game, who have a certain similarity to the infamous Slambo (who makes a guest appearance). These chaos champions are clad in metallic green armour and are incredibly easy to paint.

oh man, this looks really good im so copying this. goto a gravel road, get a small container of really small gravel, spaghetti strainer sift the gravel, apply pva glue with brush to the base, then drop a few pinches of the gravel on the the base till the gravel covers all the glue. let dry, then ofc apply Agrax Earthshade, makes for a really realistic rocky base. Can then also apply some very small rocks for more visuals, or a skull or two from a Citadel Skulls box.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 жыл бұрын
I've done videos on that type of basing in the past. You can actually see the Slambo figure at the start of this video was based in that manner, just with a bit more painting rather than just a wash. I have a massive selection of natural basing materials, including different sizes of gravel and rock and some crushed up pieces of slate. All very useful. Thanks for watching.

Really nicely done, I think some 40k salamanders with this technique would look great. If there is any chance you'd consider using this technique for a 40k salamander space marine and doing a video for it I'd really like to see it. And thanks either way.

did you see how much Warhammer quest 1995 is going for on eBay. boy am I happy I jumped into it this time last year. The price of getting EVERYTHING was NOT cheep but doable for the average joe. now its getting up there. i just need the noble, wardancer and trollslayer. i have all the white dwarfs and extra card packs catacombs and orc lord . oh yea and the faith tokens for the witch hunter idk what I brought this up lol its off topic sorry

Yeah, the prices have gone through the roof. It's not a good enough game to pay £800 for! If Games Workshop did a new edition it would probably do very well. Well done on hunting down almost everything.

That looks fantastic, I'd be tempted to pick out some of the edges of the armour with a dry brush of silver, to really make it pop. I might try something similar with an orange wash and go for a rusted look.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. The edges are already highlighted from the initial dry brush before the ink. I found that trying to do it after takes it too far into silver, but certainly something that people can experiment with. Another option is doing two ink coats, highlighting with a dry brush, and then doing a final ink wash. That looks pretty cool.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Yeah I understand. I was more thinking of showing where the green gilding of the armour had worn away to show the bare metal underneath. Lovely job though, sometimes half the skill is knowing when to quit!

@@superspecky4eyes Oh, I see what you mean. I used that technique on some 40K containers and scenery pieces and it's really effective. That would probably go really well with your idea of rusted armour, to make it look really bashed up. There's certainly plenty of scope to add lots more detail from the point where I stopped in this video. If you give it a try I would love to see how it turns out.

Great metallic colour technique! Inspired me to do mine as Green, Red, Purple and Blue shaded Chaos Warriors. I'm thinking Athonian Camoshade (or Biel-Tan Green/Coelia Greenshade), Druchii Violet, Carroburg Crimson, and Drakenhof Nightshade. Thoughts?

I think that sounds great. If you're a little bit concerned, you could always test the colour scheme on a random miniature first to see if you like the finished look. Thanks for checking out the video, and best of luck with the painting!

That is a lovely result! Instead of AP Green Tone, which Citadel equivalent paint would you use? Will you paint all of them green, or will you mix up the colours (say a red for Khorne, blue for Tzeentch and purple for the Prince of Pleasure?)
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 3 жыл бұрын
I do have red, purple and blue Army Painter inks, and I briefly considered doing one in red for special characters, but in the end I did all four of them with the same colour scheme. I think any of those colours would look great (might so if I can do a blue space marine this way). I did do a video before where I mixed purple and black to create a dark knight. You could get the same effect using Citadel washes, so (for example) Athonian Camoshade instead of the green ink. The colouration wouldn't be exactly the same but you should get the same effect.

I was fortunate that I have a metal version of Slambo. Years ago, Games Workshop had a mail order of classic Chaos Warriors. It was something like buy a certain amount for $50. A friend of mine and I pick the ones we wanted and we were not disappointed. Painted my Slambo a simple dark bronze with copper highlights. Nothing special. I did use the ink on metal technique you used one of the other miniatures from that order. Used a blue ink on metal and highlighted it with gold. Worked out nicely. It's right here on the 2:46 mark, kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYmTqJuKjsSCbMk

Just so you know, if you include links in your comments they immediately get spam-trapped so it might take me a while to respond. I'm not ignoring you! I was lucky to spot this one. You've done great work there, and there are quite a few miniatures in that lot that I would like to add to my collection. I used to have the one you show at around 2:40 in the bone armour. I converted him into a banner bearer for my skeleton army. Made a nice banner for his off-hand and mounted him on a skeleton horse. Was the miniature I was most proud of as a kid.

Hello. I have been painting my knights with inspiration from your video. But my shades don't lay evenly and colorfully like yours in the video, my colors are much more uneven and pooled in the depressions. Do you keep smoothing with the brush for a long time until the paint dries? Or maybe the result is a bit deceiving on video? Thx.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
You don't need to fuss the wash too much while it's drying (that can cause more streaks), but it's possible you are using too much. If you put on too much it can dry in streaks, and too much in the recess can leave a dull finish there. Start with a nice smooth metallic base, and make sure you brush the wash out evenly. While you want a little bit to pool for recess shading, try not to leave too much there. If you need to remove some of the wash touch it with a dry brush or piece of kitchen paper, and that will draw it off.
