Green scouring pads can make a cheap and cheerful alternative to spray booth filters. These finishes look like they'd make some cool looking Eldar armour for 40k; especially with some colour-gradients in the filters. Lovely stuff.

Thanks Euan. I never though of scourers but next time, I’ll definitely give them a go.

There's an interesting acrylic variation on the sort of subtractive marbling you might want to experiment with. Here's what you do, in a nutshell - Airbrush a color. Airbrush a second color, usually kind of blotchy. Mist with windex (must be the kind with amonia). Blot with various wadded up things like paper towel, newspaper, plastic shopping bags, saran wrap, etc. Optionally, repeat. Basically, the amonia in the windex gets the top layer of paint moving again. There are a lot of variables to play with - Drying times between layers. Drying time between second layer and amonia spray, acrylic over a different kind of paint to make the base paint more resistant. Different blotting materials. Color combinations. Number of layers. Etc Here's a video of a guy doing a demo of the concept - v=TGNrYHWD1wI The only real issue I see with it for modelling purposes is that you have to be a bit more careful about the amount of windex you use to avoid too much runniness due to geometry. There are also interesting spray can art variations on these basic ideas but I'm guessing that the result is going to end up too textured for general purpose modelling stuff. Might make for some interesting rock texture for game terrain and/or dioramas though.

Highly effective results Kathy, even the failure of the foil would look okay on an alien shell or armour. The thing I have with marble when you look closely at it, is that it contains other colours within the marbling that you initially see.
@KathyMillatt

Definitely. If you look at it flat on, it doesn’t come to life in the way it does when you move it.

Great video! The secret to good results with any new technique is practice, practice, practice! We might be impressed by the result but have very little appreciation for the time and effort that went into it! Thanks for showing your 'process' and not being afraid to show what worked and what didn't (although that can be subjective). 👍

The foil+silver+thinner and the cling film+2xsilver look more like malachite than marble to my eye. That's not a bad thing. The others look like perhaps some alien minerals we don't have on Earth. I don't do Gundams and don't quite get why that sort of finish is appropriate on something supposedly made of metal and ceramic, but that's just me. The technique does strike me as useful in off-planet dioramas or exotic ancient temple stonework for sure.

Thanks and I agree that they probably wouldn’t be painted this way but some view them like modern day sports cars where their owners paint them in very stand out colours and effects. This would definitely work for alien!

Some great ideas to try for a marble effect, some have an almost Moss Agate look to them, thanks Kathy. Have you ever thought about making a movie prop replica with this method? I'm thinking particularly about the sacred rocks from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Could be an intesting project to include 3D printing, lighting and the marbling effect..... plus, if done right it could look better than any Himalayan Salt Lamp ;-)

I think they all have a use, as you say. Using filter material for me might be too much effort..... as I can 100% guarantee I'd leave some of it on the model. 🤔 I wonder if dipping might work similarly..... (never tried it, but looks cool) ..... albeit more work to it?? (All about short cuts, so dipping might be a huge no, no.)
@KathyMillatt

Dipping looks hard work too! Some people use sponges to dab on the silver. That might be quicker.

To think I spent $1,000's learning how to woodgrain, marblize etc at The Painter's Union School and I could have picked it up from Kathy. I need a V8 P.S. It's called Saran Wrap because they invented it.
