The extra highlight over the metal after the matte varnish looks great - a happy medium between protection & style. Might give that a go myself. I'll chuck a vote as I always do towards some kind of 40k CSM army painting tutorial!

Ah man, Henry, I really really enjoy these videos lately and your style in particular, I tried going more into this direction and it’s just so much more fun than painting clean lines everywhere, which is something I somehow thought I had to do. For video idea, I just wanna say anything Age of Sigmar would be nice. I’d really like to see YOUR take on an aelf. Maybe Andy has some spare Lumineth. Or maybe Idoneth. Get well soon. That last blue on the visor looks more like Underbelly Blue than Exile Blue. P3 makes a really good line of paints either way.

You can airbrush oil. And dry time was about 30minutes (including some hairdryer)

Could you spray it with Matt varnish but then brush in gloss for things you want to be shiny like the lens and the metals? Or does that not work? (Waiting for my first ever paints to arrive so I have no clue)

Can i ask a question? I have been trying to experiment with oil washes over a gloss varnish. But for some reason the end result looks nothing like the smooth coats that you guys do (like in the stormcast tutorial). It comes out grainy and splotchy. I have thinned the paint alot with mineral spirits, applied the gloss varnish in thin coats and let to dry. For some reason i can't get an even result, it's okay-ish as a paneliner, but an overall wash will have different opacity and weird stains that look uneven/grainy. What would you guys recommend? What could i do wrong?

You may be thinning your oil paint too much

I don't buy Series 7s anymore. I've two dud brushes that splay out, no more for the price I pay.

I also had a really bad Series 7, was unusable from new. Not brought from them since.

I used series 7's exclusively until about 8 years or so ago. I kept getting bad brushes with useless tips, I then switched over to Raphael 8404's and haven't looked back their far better than the winsors and I've yet to received a bad brush from them.

I've stopped buying the more premium brushes altogether, the consistency and quality has really dropped over the last couple of years in my opinion. W&N Galeria for acrylics are my go to brushes now. The synthetic hairs start to curl and break down a little after about 6-8 months, but at £2.50 a brush I don't see this as a problem. They just become my worker brush and I buy a new detail brush to last the next 6-8 months.

How do you get the acrylic to adhere after the oil wash? Did you varnish seal first?

18:00 About painting accuracy, if you go too realistic with rust, it actually looks LESS convincing. I tried painting a Skaven with rusty armour, and people thought I was going for NMM bronze! I think, after 30 years of models looking like models, we expect metal to be at least slightly metallic.
