With the release of the new edition of Warhammer 40k KILL TEAM, with the Octarius Box Set, it's time to launch our Narrative Campaign, and I'm produ to present, the xraziest Ork Kill Team, Skarzot Skull Crusher's Kommandos. This hardened team of sneak boys are veterans of the Fendathan campaign, and only know one way to fight. The way of WAAAAAAAAAAAGH, but just a slightly more refined Waaagh than some of their mindless brethren. Skarzot and his team deploy deep behind enemy territory by crashing their custom sneakplane into an enemy target, and setting up a base around the crash site. Their Big Mek and his grot gang set about fortifying the base with artillery positions and begin to repair the sneak plane ready for exfiltration whilst Skarzot and his Kommandos run a series of insurgency operations against hostile forces. Upon completion of their goal, they pack back into the sneak plane, leaving behind any grots dumb enough to not get in first, and take to skies, to either return to base, or crash land by accident and simply repeat the process all over again. You know what might be fun? Having one member of the kill team be an ork that lost an arm in a fight, but got another ork's arm sewn on. So he ends up with one kind of green paint on most of his body, but a different kind on his arm. Say that the arm got chopped off at the shoulder (or wherever the skin is hidden), so you don't need to fuss around with adding scars to the model (though if you know how, have at it). It would all really add some personality to the ork, which is what you want for a kill team.

That refers to the classic [Basecoat > Wash > Highlight] method. Often referred to as the Ctiadel method. And I used all the constrasts as thinned filters, not their original use.

Back in the day, when I was building and painting Orks, I always increased the darkness in tone on Ork skin as they moved up the command totem. So the Boss was really dark, very much based on Dark Angels green was the darkest skin. Nobs were next down the scale with variation between them because they didn't all become Nobs on the same day. And so on down the line with the grots being quite bright.

I recently picked up this Kill Team and built them last weekend. I named mine: Skarzalot DaSkullsmasha Knifey Git Gutta Squintyeye Shootdaface Smasha Da Doordown Shooty Muchfasta Magun Getshot Booma Dabigrokkitshoota Nooby McOrkface Stevie Da Squig and Karl. I'll be using some of those painting techniques as well, yours look great!

Do you wait for the black wash to dry before pulling back with the cotton bud or do you do this step when the wash is still wet?

Doesn't matter either way, as the enamel thinner jsut reactivated the wash and makes it wet again as it pulls it off :)

You would use another black wash like nuln oil, but really the entire paint job is predicated on having a really dark toning wash at the end :)

Over acrylic base paint, varnishing isn't needed. That being said, doesn't hurt wither.

It helps it flow into the recesses and contrast paints are AWFUL for staying on the model, they often rub off just by touching them once or twice, you've got to varnish them or the cotton tip will strip them just with the pressure.
