Always Board Never Boring finally puts some paint on the gargoyle from his classic 1990 copy of HeroQuest from MB Games and Games Workshop. This is a simple painting guide to show you how to paint the HeroQuest gargoyle so it looks like a bloodthirster. If you would rather paint your gargoyle to look like a stone statue, you can find a simple painting guide that might help you here:

I'm really lucky, I picked up a 99% complete box of heroquest from amazon for £120. Only thing missing was the fireplace. Everything unpainted except the dwarf. However, I don't want to sully these classic miniatures with my only just acceptable painting skills. I am actually in process of reprinting every miniature and furniture piece on my 3d printer, but I'm going to print the modern and updated versions from Monstrous Encounters which are simply outstanding! Couple of layers and washes and the detail will take care of itself. Great work on the paint job though I really like this and will use it as a guide for painting my reprint 👍👍

There is definitely something special about an original unpainted set, but I had to do so much work on every other part of the game it made sense to paint everything and make it something truly personal. Thanks for watching.

Looks great, I love the glowing whip! I painted mine as a stone gargoyle back in the day, I didn't know he was essentially a repurposed Bloodthirster until recently. Looking forward to seeing the Orcs, they were always my favourite as a kid.

Thanks for watching. The lazy painter in me was tempted to go for a stone look but I can make use of this figure as various demonic beasties in other games now. Orcs are next on the list based on the viewer poll.

Opportunity missed to say, "This is a gargoyle." I mean it doesn't matter what you said before or after that, because from 2018 til the end of time, I think every single HeroQuest fan will smile at those words, and maybe give a bit of a chuckle. I've considered that the gargoyle might look really good with a very high-shine yellow gold toned red-sort of aiming for kind of a Murgo gold look, if you've read David Eddings' books. Thing is, I'm not sure what I'd do with the plates you've painted red if I did that. Glossy or metallic black? Hmm… I also wonder if the fire might work well with blue to white fading to yellow and red at the very edges. I'm picturing a very mean little critter…

Working from blue through white, yellow, orange, red, and finally black is how I have painted fire in the past and is the more realistic way to do it.

I am working on rebuilding a hero quest set, and after enjoying the nostalgia of seeing you paint yours, I think I will print out two, do one in Bloodthirster colours like you, and another as stone. May add to the 'it that statue going to come to life?' aspect the game sometimes had.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring 2 жыл бұрын
It would actually be really fun to have a stone one on the board and then when it leaps to life switch it with the bloodthirster version. Good luck with your rebuild!

I painted mine as a bloodthirster also. I kept the wings separate during painting and the sadly snapped in half. But I've repaired them and attached them to the finished model. Love the fire effect, I just went for a black whip and metal sword.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring

The wings snapping is a very common problem. Mine had a visible stress line at the peg as well, so I got it attached as soon as possible.

I have orcs and goblins to paint, and then the box to restore. There will definitely be a final overview of everything when it's all done.

Looking very intimidating indeed. I expected the Head to be separate during the painting, but I was also expecting the wings to be off too to make it easier to paint the forward wing surface and the rear of the body… During play, I always made the Gargoyle more formidable by allowing 2 attacks, 1 Melee for the sword and 1 at range 2 for the whip, just to keep the players 'on their toes' :) I guess this series must be drawing to a close, Advanced HeroQuest to follow after the series wrap? I'll be interested in seeing how you fit *all* the painted miniatures fit into the box :)

I like to use as few sub-assembles as possible, and there was enough space between the wings and body to paint it easily. I just have the orcs and goblins left to paint, and everything is living in a Feldherr insert designed for the game, which I will show in the box restoration video.

I have been waiting to paint mine as I can never decide what colour to go for. In the heroquest (the screen the gm uses) box they have it as a stone gargoyle. So I always fancied doing it that way. But your paint job looks awesome.

Yeah, they have both styles in various places in the artwork. There is a link in the video description to a fast gargoyle painting tutorial that might give you some inspiration for a traditional stone gargoyle.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring nice one mate. I'm a newbie when it comes to painting (its my new fav hobby) and I loved what you did with the tomb from heroquest so because I have 2 gargoyles I was going to do one similar to how you did the tomb and another more like the one in this video.

That would be really cool. You could use the stone one at first, when the gargoyle is just a statue, and then swap it for the bloodthirster version when it springs to life.

Love this. I think the headress should be a hugely contrasting colour, teal or suchlike. I'm not saying you're wrong everyone has their own take. But that would focus attention to his head. A bit like how Astartes always look better with an off-colour helemet.
